Rocket Raccoon Gets Free Comic Book Day One-Shot
Attention Raccoonatics (rhymes with lunatics)! This year, Free Comic Book Day falls on May 3rd, 2014 and on that very special day, Marvel will be releasing a free Rocket Raccoon one-shot. The issue is written by Joe Caramagna and the art is by Adam Archer, with a cover by Skottie Young (featured to the left). From the previews, it seems to take place in the Keystone Quadrant and features some of Rocket's old pals and enemies.
This will be one of two Guardians of the Galaxy free comics on FCBD, so make sure you pick up both comics. Hit the jump for more images, courtesy of Comic Book Resources!

Guardians of the Galaxy #11 Review
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #11
by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Sara Pichelli and Justin Ponsor
Last week, we reviewed All-New X-Men #22, which was the beginning of the X-Men / Guardians of the Galaxy crossover event, "The Trial of Jean Grey", as seen from the X-Men's perspective. While that issue was very well crafted, it did not feature much of the Guardians. Issue #11 of Guardians of the Galaxy, however, makes up for that.
The issue starts off in a place that should be familiar to many Galaxians. It's a little place called Knowhere (although it looks more like Mos Eisley). The coolest part about this first scene is the callbacks to the Abnett and Lanning run, including an easter egg cameo from our favorite space canine (look for it). We also observe a conversation between Peter Quill and Gamora, which features "the most dangerous woman in the galaxy" in her old garb.
Once we catch up with the old galactic council, from the first few issues of this series, we begin to realize how this connects to All New X-Men. Apparently, the Shi'ar want to capture Jean Grey and hold a trial (no surprise there), while other galactic leaders disagree with their decision.
Halfway through the issue, there is a little scene that neatly wraps up Iron Man's brief journey with The Guardians, and I must say, it's pretty funny. Bendis' knack for humor was still very apparent in this issue.
The artwork was done by the very talented Sara Pichelli, who drew a few Guardians of the Galaxy issues last year. She has such a talent for drawing complex expressions on the characters' faces, that you feel the pages come to life and can almost hear the voices in your head. Major props to Pichelli, Ponsor, and Bendis for this issue.
Overall Rating: 5/5

Guardians of the Galaxy Comic-Con Footage Remade with LEGO
Last year, Marvel Studios premiered exclusive footage of their upcoming space epic, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, at the 2013 Comic-Con in San Diego. Soon after, a low quality, bootleg video of the footage spread around the internet like wildfire.
Youtuber(s) 99brickstudios created this awesome shot-for-shot recreation of the footage, using mostly LEGO pieces (many custom-made). We think they did an awesome job. Check out their video and leave a comment below!

EDITORIAL: Flarkin' Awesome! 007
Disclaimer: Leo Wyld is an editorial contributor for Guard The Galaxy. His views do not necessarily reflect the views of every other contributor associated with this site.
Cosmic greetings! I am Leo Wyld, the Raccoonatic Commander, and well, I am not feeling particularly awesome right now. Here we are, the first month into the Year of the Raccoon (first day if you go by Lunar, heh) and things are not goin' too well for me or for our favorite hero...
Flarkin' Awesome! Issue 007 - Raccoonatics vs. The World
In the merchandise issue, I believe it was 005, I touched on the difficulty of finding Rocket-related merchandise currently. This is because the general public has not largely become aware of Rocky's awesomeness and demand dictates supply, etc. Similarly, it can be a tough position, at times, simply to be a Raccoonatic. Especially when, at the times, it feels Rocket is the Rodney Dangerfield of Marvel's roster (well, if Rodney had been a badass space raccoon): he gets no flarkin' respect!
(More after the jump)
No Respect! |
Ok, fine, Marvel green-lit a Guardians of the Galaxy movie a couple years back (only six months left to release, woot) and decided to put Rocket on the rosters of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Marvel Heroes to cross-promote. They did that right. But even Marvel is capable of ignoring our procyonid protagonist. Today, Marvel wrapped up their 25 Best Heroes of 2013 list. Rocket was chosen to represent Guardians for UMvC3 and Marvel Heroes, why, he is the heart of the team. That team, in 2013, had a series of Infinite comics leading up to, the launch of Guardians of the Galaxy volume 3 (also in 2013). A run that has not only been well-received by critics and the public, but one that also proved to be a financial success. Why, then, was Rocket (and all the other Guardians of the Galaxy) completely snubbed from said list? I am no marketing major, but I would think placing Rocket Raccoon high on such a list might pique curiosity and help promote the upcoming movie to their general readership. It is difficult for us Raccoonatics to get others to believe Rocket is awesome when Marvel themselves do not seem to think so. (And don't even get me started on this month's animal variant for Guardians)
Raccoons are awesome, in general, but Rocket Raccoon is the most awesome raccoon. We've established that, correct? Helping save the entire galaxy on a regular basis while being a cannon-wielding total badass. There are just not many degrees of awesome above that. And several ranks of awesomeness below that would be Earth-bound criminal. That still can be awesome but never as much so as cosmic badass. Tell that to SuperHeroMoviesNews.com, though. A site whose loyalties, you would think, side with, I dunno, superheroes! They introduced an article about the announcement of the Sly Cooper movie with the words "Move over Rocket Raccoon..." No, I'm sorry, Rocket does not take second place to Sly Cooper ever, in any sense. Don't worry, Raccoonatics, your Commander left them a fun little comment. (Don't worry I stayed *mostly* civil)
"Don't call me a Raccoon!" |
Sometimes people mean well, but it is clear they are doing something as a quick aside, for commercial reasons, whatever. Heyuguys.co.uk wrote an article about the characters they are most looking forward to seeing on movies in 2014. Rocket made their list, yay, and that would have meant something, except that the only "research" they bothered to do for the character was, clearly, just watching the Guardians episode of the Ultimate Spider-man cartoon. How do I know that... this line...
"(in the comics, Rocket comes from a race that looks like raccoons, but rumour has it that he’ll be a genetically enhanced raccoon)"
... Facepaw, epic facepaw. Guys the genetically enhanced raccoon thing, *that* comes from the comics. The first thing, not so much from the comics but from a cartoon episode. (Even though there were indicators that might be introduced into 616 canon, hasn't happened yet and hopefully won't). I do not like people to be misinformed about Rocket, as Raccoonatic Commander, I cannot let it happen. So, I left a comment correcting the error. And that comment was promptly deleted. Nice.
On LEGO Marvel Superheroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy were chosen to be on the roster. That's great. Sorta. Almost all of the heroes, even Aunt May, had their own dedicated tweet focusing on their existence in the game. Guess who didn't. Yep. And with good reason, Rocket was made practically useless in the game. Cannot use any situational powers, his awesome guns cannot destroy special bricks, he is even one of the only heroes who cannot do basic things like activate switches or drive vehicles. What's a Raccoonatic to do?
I've also had some bad dealings for being the Raccoonatic Commander. Many many times on Marvel Heroes forums over the past year plus. Specifically, just a few days ago, I was openly mocked and belittled in vulgar fashion by a Marvel Heroes bully who decided to follow me onto Twitter. The basis for these attacks, my being a fan of Rocket Raccoon. Seriously.
Much like people who stay loyal to a local sports team that never has a chance to win a championship, being a Raccoonatic can often be a struggle and an uphill battle. Convincing people he is awesome when, at a first glance, he is mistaken for a cutesy cartoon, not an easy thing to do. And then you remember what an amazing character he is and you realize it is not something you can walk from, even if it means facing down the entire world. But, going back to the sports team analogy, this is the Year of the Raccoon, this is the year we metaphorically win the championship. Stay strong and, Raccoonatics, Unite!
Until next time, hopefully a happier time for us Raccoonatics, see ya 'round the Raccooniverse!

John C. Reilly Briefly Talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Actor John C. Reilly (Rhomann Dey in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film) was recently at Sundance Film Festival, premiering his new film, Life After Beth. Youtube channel Flicks and the City got the chance to speak to him on the red carpet. When asked about his experience on Guardians of the Galaxy, Reilly said, "Oh, it's great. I got to be in London. Other than that, I think Marvel would put me in handcuffs if I say another single word about it."
When pressed for a little bit more information, Reilly refused to give away anything substantial, but he did tell a short story about working with Zoe Saldana. "Working with Zoe...I think, on the last day, I saw her without her [green] makeup on. So, I only met her one time when she wasn't the color green, and I was like, 'You're beautiful!' She was like, 'Thanks....'"Check out the video below!

Four Tips For GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY's Marketing Team
Yesterday, many fans of Guardians of the Galaxy, from all over the world, waited patiently (and some impatiently) to get their first "official" glimpse at footage from the upcoming Guardians film. According to certain websites, a TV spot for the film had been purchased by Disney (who owns Marvel) and would be shown during Super Bowl XLVIII. Obviously, no such footage was shown (since if it was, we'd all be watching it on repeat until our eyes started bleeding). Nonetheless, reading all of the disappointed tweets authored by my poor fellow Galaxians (yes, I'm still trying to make that phrase happen) got me thinking. When we do get our first glimpse at Guardians of the Galaxy, what will it look like?
"That raccoon looks awesome!" |
1. Immediately Connect It To The Marvel Cinematic Universe
This one might just be the most important. People love Iron Man. People love Thor. People love Captain America. You get the idea. Before any footage of 'The Guardians' is shown, show footage of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. Let the people know they are about to embark on the next big Marvel Studios adventure. You could even have a voiceover saying, "From the studio that introduced you to The Avengers..." during the introductory footage.
"Look at that much superior team in space..." |
Guardians of the Galaxy needs something to immediately separate it from every other sci-fi movie. As bad as it sounds, the general public need to know this isn't some cheesy idea hatched by some misled hack writer. It is, in fact, a MARVEL STUDIOS film. After showcasing each Avenger, we can now be introduced to our "new" team. Which leads me to my next point...
2. Introduce Rocket Raccoon and Groot First
Some people may disagree with me on this, but Rocket Raccoon is going to be the thing people remember most about this movie. Many people may even call it 'that movie with the talking raccoon in space.' That's okay. The general public can handle a talking raccoon. Just so long as you address it in the right way; that is with humor.
Back to the imaginary trailer: We've just seen shots of Iron Man, Thor, Cap, and Hulk in action and looking really tough. Also, the voice-over guy has just said "From the studio that introduced you to The Avengers...". Quickly, the screen cuts to black. The voice-over continues, "...comes an all-new league of superhero." At this point, people don't know what to expect.
"Awww...they're so cu...OMG, the raccoon just shot that guy!" |
Then we see Rocket Raccoon standing on Groot's shoulder. Suddenly, Rocket pulls out a large gun and looks at Groot, who looks back at him. Rocket says something like "I'm ready if you are." Groot looks up and says "I Am Groot". Then we see Rocket and Groot bust out of the ground/sewer, just like in the Comic-Con trailer. Rocket starts firing off shots at the bad guys, while Groot smashes a few guards into the ground. At this point, Groot and Rocket don't look so cute anymore. In fact, now they seem like they could do some real damage.
The reason this works is because Marvel is immediately addressing how ridiculous the concept seems at first glance. I mean, the two characters look kind of cutesy, and people laugh at the idea that these guys are being compared to The Avengers. That's okay, because people are laughing with Marvel, not at them. Then we quickly transition into the "not cutesy" version of the duo, and we see how tough and rugged the two characters can be. Which leads me to my next point...
3. Show Plenty Of Action
People need to know that Guardians of the Galaxy is not a comedy. Sure, there will be plenty of jokes and laughs, but the general audience want to know that they are in for a thrill ride. The Comic-Con footage did a great job showcasing both of the comedy and the action, so something similar to that would suffice. Personally, I loved the montage of all the action, mixed with the epic cinematic version of 'Hooked On A Feeling.' It really gets the blood pumping.
"We want action!" |
The reason that this is so important is that we need teens and adults to be interested in the property, as well as kids. Remember how great the action in The Avengers was? We need to see something that rivals the Chitauri invasion in pure awesomeness.
4. Star Power
If Guardians of the Galaxy is lacking one thing, it is not star power. Zoe Saldaña starred in the top-grossing movie of all time, Avatar, and Bradley Cooper is one of biggest stars in Hollywood right now. Not to mention, Vin Diesel, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close are all household names. With a cast like that, you really can't not advertise the cast.
Separated at birth? |
People must know that Bradley Cooper is Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel is Groot. If the general public doesn't know this by the time the film is released, Marvel's marketing team has really dropped the ball on this one.
That's all, Galaxians!
I want to hear from all of you! Drop a comment below and let me know what you thought of this article, or how you think Marvel should advertise Guardians of the Galaxy!

Bradley Cooper Talks Rocket Raccoon in GUARDIANS
While Bradley Cooper was in France, promoting American Hustle, he sat down with a French reporter from website MDCU. The interview was spoken in completely French, but we have a (rough) translation of what was said. First, when asked how does it feel to be the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Cooper said, "I enjoyed it. I changed my voice for it." Cooper went on to jokingly say that "Rocket Raccoon will speak French in the movie." Without giving any more away, Cooper said he is "finishing the job, but not done yet."He also "loves playing Rocket" and feels"lucky to play a raccoon in this movie."
Not much, but still very cool to hear that he changed his voice. Maybe this means we'll get more of a Cockney accent after all...or not. Drop a comment below!

Chris Pratt Talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) recently sat down with Nerdist to talk about The LEGO Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy. When asked what it was like to be in a movie with a smaller fan base, Pratt said the following:
"It was kind of nice. I think it was a benefit… that there wasn’t, like a movie franchise that we were recreating or rebooting. It was a chance for us to do something really unique and original and tell an amazing story. There have been a lot of incarnations of the comic, this is just another incarnation but told in a different medium. I think [director] James Gunn did an amazing job. He’s a maniac in the best way, and, honestly, the movie is going to be like right up there with The LEGO Movie as the greatest thing you’ve ever seen in your life.”It's been a day full of quotes, but we haven't really learned much. I'll probably start compiling these quotes into a bigger post in the future. Drop a comment below and let me know what you think.

This series was a gamechanger, being the first time Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot, all three appeared in a comic together. It also was the first series to feature Star-Lord in his extremely popular mask, which he will be wearing in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film (we're very glad to say). The issue is $7.99 USD.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY To Introduce PLANET HULK?
Over the past few months, I've noticed a coupleextras from Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy have listed their roles in the upcoming film as "Sakaaran". To be perfectly honest, I had no idea what a Sakaraan was before doing some research. Apparently, Sakaarans come from the planet Sakaar (no surprise there), which Hulk crashed on after being banished from Earth in Planet Hulk. Sakaarans also have a "red-skinned" appearance, bearing a striking resemblance to one of the extras we saw in certain set photos from the Millennium Bridge last year.
Whether or not Guardians of the Galaxy will introduce the planet Sakaar is yet to be seen. If it is introduced, however, should we expect Marvel Studios to announce a Planet Hulk movie for Phase 3? Only time will tell. Until then, check out these awesome cameos of Star-Lord and Gamora, from the 2010 Planet Hulk animated film (available now on Netflix Instant).

RUMOR: Is GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 Planned For 2016?
According to the website JoBlo, a "reliable source" has told them that Marvel Studios is planning to release a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy on May 6th, 2016. That would mean that the sequel would be released less than two years after the first movie.
While this could all be hogwash, if true, it would mean that Marvel Studios has full confidence in Guardians of the Galaxy becoming their next big film franchise, especially considering the rushed release date. At the end of the day, it will all come down to how Guardians of the Galaxy does at the box office.
