5 Characters I Hope Appear In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

$

Greetings, everyone! As a longtime fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it's an honor to be contributing to this site. I'm Dan, and as you'll see over time, I love random discussions, and I love making lists for others to debate over.

As we get closer to the release of the film debut of our favorite team, more and more questions come up: What will Rocket's origin be? Will Nebula and Gamora have the same ties to Thanos that they do in the comics? How will Yondu fit in? But one question that I find intriguing is one that we tend to ask anymore going into any new MCU film: who will cameo?

Face it: this movie is ushering in an entirely new setting for the MCU. Unlike other movies, it can't depend on any groundwork layed down by the other films. Meaning there's going to be a LOT of new characters introduced. Sure, we all know by now who the main characters in the movie are. But if Marvel/Disney is as serious about the future of this franchise as they seem to be, it would be ridiculous to not at least cameo or hint to some characters that could have bigger roles in future movies.

That being said, here's my personal list of who I would love to see appear in the GotG movie, and why.

5. Mantis

In my opinion, a vital part of the team in the previous volume of the comic. She provided them with a powerful telepath, as well as with a calm and rational thinker (which, face it, they sorely need). Sadly, I also think this is the one we're least likely to see, as the writers will likely scoff at having two different green-skinned females in the movie. It sounds ridiculous, but let's all admit it: that's how these people think. Still... it would be great to see her on the big screen. Maybe in a sequel?

4. Cosmo:

Another that we're VERY unlikely to see, even in a sequel. However, Disney has high hopes for Rocket going over well with audiences, so who's to say that we couldn't get a small glimpse of Cosmo somewhere just in case they're able to utilize him in the future? Come on folks... a hyper-intelligent, talking Russian dog in a cosmonaut's uniform? and he does have, in his favor, the fact that he's got a huge cult following among fans. Yes, I'm serious

3. Angela:

Possibly the most marketable character on this list. A stunning, redheaded, scantily-clad warrior angel? She could be a franchise unto herself given a good enough story. Roughly 90% of us thought this was who Karen Gillan was cast as until her role as Nebula was revealed. A simple glimpse of her in the background could lay groundwork for a future star in the MCU. If Marvel is as serious about this becoming a franchise as we're hearing, I wouldn't at ALL be surprised to see at least a hint that she exists.

2. Adam Warlock:

I would say this is both the most likely one, as well as the second most important one. We all know by now that the MCU is heading towards an Infinity Gauntlet storyline. Some characters that were involved in the comics (Silver Surfer, etc) obviously can't be included due to their film rights being owned by other studios. But while he's important to the plot, even the Surfer isn't necessary. But if Marvel is going to do this story even partially like it's comic counterpart, there's one character that cannot be left out of this: Adam Warlock. He's also been a member of the Guardians in the past, and is as important to Thanos' story as Nebula, Gamora, or Drax. Some people are saying they think Warlock's cocoon is briefly shown in the mid-credits scene of Thor: The Dark World, and it would make a lot of sense if that's the case. Warlock emerging from it would make a fantastic ending to the film.

1. Iron Man

The single most important cameo needs to be Iron Man. While this might seem like an odd choice for number one, think about it: This film is going to be a hard sell to the casual fan. The fan who doesn't read the comics, but just likes the movies is *not* going to look at this movie and say "Oh yeah, this fits in with The Avengers". You need some way of tying this film in with the rest of the MCU aside from the fact that it deals with an Infinity Stone. What better way to do this than with a cameo by the character who's arguably the offical face of the MCU? And on a purely fanboy note... I'd give anything to see the hilarious banter between Tony and Rocket on the big screen.

Do you agree with this list? Let me know! Do you disagree? Then please, tell me who YOU'D like to see cameo in the film! This is the film we've all been waiting for, fellow Galaxians. Let's enjoy the ride!

Chris Pratt Talks To MTV About GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt recently sat down with MTV for an interview, giving an account of the casting process of his role as Star-Lord. When asked about the audition period, Pratt said, “I was like, "No way, that's a bad idea." I was circling around it for a long time, and they kept testing people and testing people, and no one was right for it. I went in and met the director, James Gunn, and something happened. He gave me a sense of what he wanted. I, of course, wasn't able to read a script until essentially after signing up to do the movie. I could tell from what he wanted that it was something I close to what I could give. It started just becoming real. Then it did. I had a screen test for it. Even during the screen test, I was like, "Oh, I got this. This is mine. This is mine now." I knew going in."

Pratt also talked a little bit about The Guardians themselves. “It's kind of each one does their own thing. I think James Gunn said it recently. He said 'where sometimes comic book movies can go wrong is they take themselves very seriously and it's material that shouldn't be taken seriously. It's really fun material. We do have a pretty fun moment like the team's coming together. It's a shot where the team is walking in slow motion and the good music's playing. We have that moment, but this is a little different than other comic book movies because we're not superheroes necessarily. It's like an epic space opera type of movie. It's not like there's an origin where I can shoot sharks out of my eyes, or have some type of special thing. It's not like that. We're kind of misfits and our strength is that we work as a team.”

Not much new information, but still very cool to hear Pratt talk about it. Thanks to CBM for the transcript. Also, head over there to watch the video of the interview.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Storybook Coming In July

TJ Dietsch from Marvel.com confirmed that the upcoming children's book, 'Guardians of the Galaxy (The Origin)', would be released on July 1st, 2014, a full month before the movie's release date. In his article, Dietsch wrote,"Artists and colorists like Ron Lim and Dean White now use the established color guides and style to create new stories like “Guardians of the Galaxy (The Origin),” which hits stores on July 1. Palacios and Isanove went back and forth a bit when figuring out characters like Groot and Gamora who have a bit of a darker tone, but eventually found a great balance they think will do well to define those figures for a new audience."The article also included a picture of Gamora from the book(pictured below).

ALL-NEW X-MEN #23 Review

All-New X-Men #23
Story by: Brian Michael Bendis
Art by: Stuart Immonen and Wade Von Grawbadger
Colors by: Marte Gracia

Last year, when I heard that the Guardians of the Galaxy would be teaming up with the All-New X-Men, honestly, I was a little bit skeptical. I wasn't sure if the two teams would really mesh well together. However, after reading the first three issues of The Trial of Jean Grey, consider me a believer. This storyline is so intrinsically fun, that it's hard to pick out any flaws with it at all.

This issue starts off with Cyclops waking up on The Guardians' ship. Immediately, we are showered with Bendis' signature humor. Many jokes derive from the culture shock the X-Men receive, hanging out with a talking raccoon and tree in space. It isn't all fun and games though. Bendis, Immonen, and Von Grawbadger have done a great job conveying the sense of isolation Jean Grey feels, as she's held prisoner by the Shi'ar.

Of course, that's not to say there aren't any flaws. For die-hard fans of Guardians (such as myself), it's a little annoying to witness Rocket Raccoon's continued annoyance with the 'raccoon' label (Why would his name be Rocket Raccoon if he was annoyed by being called 'a raccoon?'). It doesn't make any sense at all, and the retcon has a bad aftertaste.

Other than that one minor setback, All-New X-Men #23 is a fun comic, which ends on a great cliffhanger, as someone from Cyclop's past is brought into the mix.

Overall Rating: 4/5

Cosmic greetings, all! Tons of new toys announced and our first trailer.  To paraphrase an icon... Truly, this is the age of Guardians of the Galaxy! (And, yes, the Year of the Raccoon).  What are we gonna talk about today?  I have spent a fair amount of time on this site discussing Marvel Heroes.  While there are not nearly enough video games that offer us the opportunity to play the role of the galaxy's "premier procyonid protagonist," there is one other significant one that I have mentioned only in passing a couple times...

Flarkin' Awesome! Issue 008 - Hey There, Fighter Fan!

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  Many people resented that it was a full-priced separate game that was essentially an expansion to Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  For those who did not purchase the original, however, it was indeed the ultimate version.  And, most importantly, a thoroughly well-designed fighting game that can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels.  Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, among other changes, added a number of new characters that were not in the original version.  Among these characters was Marvel's Rocket Raccoon.  This was the first time many people became aware the hero even existed, myself included.  For me, though, I read his Wikipedia article, joined Marvel Heroes Beta forums where I discussed and learned of him, and read his entire comic appearances before I even owned or played UMvC3.  Others were not in the same position.  UMvC3 was played by many who were not comic fans but were fighting game fans or perhaps just gamers in general.  For these people, Rocket, as a character, has been defined solely by the way he is portrayed in this game.  I've done compares and contrasts in this manner between Rocket and his Marvel Heroes counterpart... it is now time to do the same for UMvC3, and I think it is very important I do so. (More After the Jump)

First off, his model.  Very well done, near perfect really, I cannot complain.  In fact, sorry, Gazillion, I think I might like Rocket's model on UMvC3 slightly more than his Marvel Heroes one.  Among other things, he is actually much closer to a correct height compared to other heroes than he is in Marvel Heroes. Most importantly, he looks pretty cool.

His costume is modeled after his blue and crimson Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 costume most people are familiar with.  And his alternate "costumes", as with other characters, are just recolors of that, inspired by different comic costumes. The one exception is his 1985 costume which is available in a DLC pack. (Don't have it yet, myself.  Horrible procrastinator)

The voice is Greg Ellis, subtle Cockney accent, as he often was portrayed with, until recently.  Mr. Ellis also did his voice on Earth's Mightiest Heroes.  I prefer Steve Blum's take on the accent in Marvel Heroes, but Greg does a good enough job and there is not *that* much dialog.  What dialog, quips, and text quotes there are seem canon enough, mostly, cannot really complain.  As a matter of fact, Capcom gets bonus points from me for reinforcing #RocketIsARaccoon in some of these.

Now, the moves. *Sigh* This is where things unravel a bit and cause some pretty significant confusion amongst UMvC3-only Raccoonatics.  Don't get me wrong, some of the moves are an admirable fit.  As with any Marvel Vs. game, though, some stuff is added purely for fun, and some of that fun stuff is far from canon.

His basics include a punch, a tail swipe, and a pistol blast. Ok, those work ok, the pistol for sure. Especially if Rocket is competing in a streetfighting competition instead of taking down hordes of aliens.

His grab is running up his opponent and clawing at them. Alright, a bit primitive, but Rocket has been shown clawing at someone in panel.  He'll resort to his basic animal defenses if need be, and a fighting competition could do that.

His taunt is spitting at the ground and making a snarky comment. Ok, that works very well.

Wild Ripper - He does a lunge forward with an energy knife (which also features in his victory animation).  Rocket tends to prefer guns, but it is a mostly melee-based competition, and it is tech he could have access to, so I will give the energy knife a pass. (And it was even mentioned again in his LEGO Marvel appearance)

Spitfire - Pulls out a large high-tech gun and fires a burst of energy.  No problem with this. Completely within Rocket's wheelhouse.  Good job.

Oil Bomb - Throws a balloon filled with oil to the ground, which he can later ignite with his pistol when someone is on top of it.  A solid tactical plan, which is Rocket's closest thing to a superpower, but rather low tech.  A balloon?  Really, don't think Rocket would do that unless he was trapped in a low tech situation where he absolutely had to improvise.  Since he has big guns and energy knives with him, that does not seem to be the case.

Mr. Flapper - Springs some sort of large bear trap.  You could have a high-tech bear trap, I guess, but it is just not Rocket's style.  He has never used anything like this in the comics. Though a tactical genius, Rocket does not usually rely on traps, he uses his agility and cunning to tackles foes head on.

Pendulum - One of the more cringe-worthy moves for those who actually know Rocket outside of the game.  Rocket triggers a log trap, that is right, a log on a rope that swings down and hits the enemy. Funny to see, sure.  Again, though, so many things wrong with this be a move for our interplanetary gun-loving space raccoon.  Is he suddenly employed as a park ranger in an impromptu paintball match to the death?  Is he an Ewok?  No, no, he is not.  Rocket Raccoon would not only not use a log trap, he would likely laugh at or mock anyone who employed something so primitive.

Angel Gift - Rocket places some sort of high-tech mine that, when the enemy makes contact, causes a rock to fall on their head.  Maybe some sort of magnetism or something.  Ok, it is much better than a primitive bear or log trap, but, again, Rocket tends to tackle enemies head on.  Needless to say, he has never used such a device in the comics, though.

Claymore - Rocket puts down a high-tech claymore mine that sets opponents ablaze when they step on it.  Technologically possible, something Rocket could do if he needed to rely on a trap.  Again, though, not really the trap sort and such a thing has never been used by him in comics.

Grab Bag - Rocket's third high-tech mine triggers some sort of electrically charged net trap.  Ok, that is a way to make a primitive trap more high-tech.  Still not sure Rocket would use such a thing, though.

Rocket Skate - A mid-air move where Rocket uses his ol' Rocket Skates to charge through the air.  It is still not certain whether the skates were part of the fake memories or whether he really had them, but it is based on something from the comics, even if he has not used his Rocket Skates in panel since 1985 (he does have the 80's costume for DLC).  I'll say a good call on this one, Capcom.

Tunnel Rat - Ugh. And back to solidly non-canon in the worst possible way.  Rocket digs a tunnel through the dirt. Like a mole or rabbit or racc... no, raccoons do not burrow.  And, guess what, neither does Rocket, ever.  In one comic, he expressed a dislike for being underground.  While he has called himself a raccoon, he tries to distance himself from behaving like an animal (and again, not even regular raccoons burrow).  If this had just been a move on UMvC3, it would have been bad enough, but its true dubious legacy is that it inspired Gazillion to give Rocket a burrow power on Marvel Heroes. Let's move on... *sigh*

Rock 'n' Roll - One of his power moves. Rocket pulls out some sort of huge chain gun (which Marvel Heroes doesn't even have) fires that for a bit, then immediately pulls out a large high-tech gun and fires a plasma blast.  Big guns, check, shooting them, check, doing both enthusiastically, check. I don't think you could throw together a better power move for Rocket Raccoon. So, major props to Capcom for this one.

Mad Hopper - Another hyper move, throws down a very large trap (which he specifically exclaims ways more than himself, a common observation that has been made about his cannons).  Anyone who steps on the trap is launched upwards by a giant spring pad.  Random.  And not really something Rocket has or would do, although I'm sure he would think it was funny to see an enemy launched into the air.

Rocky Raccoon - Rocket pulls out a shovel and buries his opponent in a hole, then, declaring he loves the smell of napalm..., he jumps onto the ladder of some sort of aircraft and a giant bomb is dropped on the opponent.  Over-the-top and amusing, but I am not convinced it is something Rocket would do.  Rocket does not really rely on explosives much.  I've mentioned that in other FA's.  If they had to have a big explosive move, they should have done the moment from Guardians v2 Issue 1, where he pulls he pulls out his special super-grenade calls it affectionately by name and gives it a toss. Or...

Groot?  He is mentioned in a text victory quip, but he has no presence in Rocket's moveset, at all.  Groot drops down, proclaims "I Am Groot!" and does a massive beatdown on the opponent.  That has actually happened in the comics many times and would have been a perfect ultimate move. Maybe hindsight is 20/20 but I still cannot believe Capcom missed that opportunity.

So, that basically covers our look at Rocket in UMvC3.  There are some basic moves I did not cover, but that should give you an idea.  And, if you do only know Rocket from UMvC3, please, for my sake, go to my site read some stuff, read his section on this site, read his Wikipedia page, better yet, get Marvel Unlimited and read some comics, but be very aware that the portrait Capcom has painted of Rocket is a colorful and entertaining, but largely flawed, portrait.

Five Reasons Why GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Could Be A Huge Success... Or A Huge Failure (And Why The Future of The MCU Could Be Riding On It's Shoulders)

With the first official trailer debuting tonight, fans everywhere are about to start truly talking about Guardians of the Galaxy. The one thing everyone agrees on so far is that this movie represents the single biggest risk Marvel Studios has taken thus far. The success or failure of this film will surely show us how the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be. If it is a success? Obviously Marvel will be more willing and eager to take risks on other lesser-known properties (Inhumans, Heroes For Hire, etc). If it is a failure, however... we could see a more streamlined, linear MCU that focuses solely on established commodities like The Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, etc.

For that reason alone, even people who aren't interested in Guardians should be pulling for it to be a huge hit. Because rest assured: if this film fails? We will NOT be seeing films of any other cult-favorite Marvel comics anytime soon. That Punisher reboot you were hoping for? No way in hell. That Hulk sequel starring Ruffalo? A *lot* less likely. Marvel may not be saying it... but the entire direction the MCU is going in may well rest on our beloved Rocket's furry little shoulders.

Which brings me to five reasons why this movie COULD be a colossal hit...

            1. Star power: One thing this film has going for it right off the bat is star power. Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper both have huge fanbases, Chris Pratt has a sizable fanbase, WWE fans will want to see Dave Batista, and Star Trek/Avatar fans will want to see Zoe Saldana. As long as the marketing people do their jobs, the cast in and of itself should account for quite a bit of box office revenue.

Vin Diesel is a tree hugger.

            2. Rocket Raccoon: The big X-Factor of this movie. Rocket, if done properly, has the potential to be the breakout star of the MCU, on a massive, Iron Man level. He's got the attitude, snarky humor, and penchant for violence that will bring in the older fans, and cute, cuddly appearance that will endear children to him. Rocket is the film's biggest gamble, but one that if utilized properly, should pay off HUGE.

            3. Snark In Space: If we've learned anything from JJ Abrams "Star Trek" reboot, it's that a mix of high-energy action, witty and snappy banter between the characters, and well-placed drama will bring in crowds. At least in the comics, this team has all three things in spades. The banter between Rocket and Star-Lord is constantly entertaining, Groot is used for a perfect mix of comedy and kick-ass action, Gamora should be good for at least one amazing fight scene, Rocket's origin (if they go where we all suspect they are with it) is good for some drama, and there should be plenty of great sci-fi action to be had. This has all the earmarks of a huge hit.

They made a movie out of those toys?

            4. Merchandising: Marvel is doing one thing right already - they are marketing the HELL out of this film in regards to merchandising. I don't think I've seen this much merchandise for a Marvel movie right out of the gate other than Avengers. They're doing their best to assure that every kid is going to want to see Rocket, Groot and company on the big screen. Hell, I'm 40 years old and I'M excited for some of the merchandise.

            5. The Avengers Connection: If Marvel Studios is smart, they'll be making damn well sure that EVERYONE knows this is the last film before Avengers: Age Of Ultron. By now, everyone who loves these movies knows they all connect in some fashion, so being the last movie in line before the sequel to the biggest movie in recent history has to create SOME buzz. Now, granted... if the MCU is going in the direction we think it is, "Guardians" will likely tie in far closer to the THIRD Avengers film than the second, but shhh. That can be our little secret, right? Right???

"Those guys are like Guardians of the Galaxy on Earth."

...and five reasons it could be a (gulp!) utter failure.

            1. Rocket Raccoon/Groot: As I mentioned earlier, Rocket is the X-Factor here. If people think he and Groot seem cool, they'll support the characters (and the film) in droves. However... as much as I love Star Wars, the prequel trilogy did a LOT of harm to people's opinion of CGI and CGI-based characters. If people get the impression either of them are going to be another Jar Jar Binks type of character, or if they think the concept of either is too ridiculous, general audiences will turn on this film faster than you could imagine.

            "But..but..raccoons can't talk. I'm confused."

            2. Marketing: Despite the initial merchandising onslaught, a lot of fans fear that Marvel isn't totally on board with supporting the film properly. If that is the case, the movie could fail spectacularly. We all can be honest and admit that to the casual fan, this movie is going to be a HARD SELL. Your average person who watched Avengers but doesn't read the comics is NOT going to be leaping in excitement over the chance to see a movie full of characters they've never heard of, a talking tree, and a raccoon with a rifle. With Avengers, there wasn't a whole lot of marketing needed. It more or less spoke for itself. Marvel is going to have to WORK for this one.

            3. Casting: While Chris Pratt seems, on paper at least, to be a good choice for Peter Quill, he's also a highly unproven commodity as far as being a leading man goes. If this becomes the breakout role some of us are expecting it to be? Boom. A star is born and so is a franchise. But if he's a bad fit for the role it could create a disaster.

"Chris Pratt? Who's he? I'm confused."

            4. Too much story, too little time?: This is *my* biggest fear. You've got five main characters, all of whom have never been in a movie before. Meaning you've got to find a way to properly tell us who all five of them are in a way that will make us care about them, PLUS fit in the plot of the movie, all in the span of about two hours.

            5. Timing: Between the new Transformers film, Amazing Spider-Man 2, 22 Jump Street, Rise of The Planet of The Apes, X-Men, and so many more, there are a LOT of movies coming out this spring/summer that people are looking forward to. Meaning, they might be more thrifty when it comes to seeing movies they're not sure about. This is where Marvel HAS to act. They've got to *make* people want to see this movie. If not.... uh-oh.

"Now X-Men! That's more like it. I'm not confused anymore."

Now, having said all of this, let me state for the record that I personally think the film is going to be a hit. Whether or not it makes as much as we'd all like remains to be seen, but I still think it's going to be at the very least a big enough hit to warrant the rumored sequel in Phase 3. We all need to do our part to hype this film up. Tell your friends about it. Tweet about it. Post to Facebook about it (because really... nobody needs to see another 100 photos of your kids. WE WANT ROCKET!).

This could be an exciting new phase beginning for the MCU. So many great things could come of this movie being a hit. So keep your fingers crossed, fellow Galaxians! Only thing we know for sure here is... AUGUST 1ST CAN'T GET HERE SOON ENOUGH!
