MCU: The Strange Cinematic Birth of Adam Warlock (Editorial)
For cosmic comic fans, Adam Warlock is a very important character to the Marvel universe. He has been single-handedly responsible for taking down "the mad Titan" Thanos on many an occasion. He has been a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well. Also, he has was pretty much the main character of the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, a storyline which Marvel Studios seems to be moving their films towards. But will he make it into the "Marvel Cinematic Universe"? Let's talk about that...
More after the jump!
The Strange Birth of Adam Warlock
Before we get to where Adam Warlock fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I'd like to tell you a little bit about the guy...
Fantastic Four #67 |
Adam Warlock was born (or created) in 1967 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He was initially given the name of "Him" in Fantastic Four #67, which was his first appearance (in the flesh). However, Warlock appeared in "cocoon form" in the previous issue, Fantastic Four #66.
As you can see in the image to the left, Adam Warlock was birthed like a "beautiful butterfly." Actually, he was created by "The Enclave," these super-evil scientists who work at a remote place on Earth called "The Beehive." (Take notes, you will be graded.) The reason they create Warlock is simple: they wanted to create the "perfect human being" in order to take over the world (or something like that). They succeed, in some capacity, but while in cocoon form, "Him" (a.k.a. Adam Warlock) realizes their evil plan and is like, "Screw this. I'm leaving." So he breaks out of his cocoon and ends up kidnapping Lady Sif to be his bride (who can blame him?).
Birth in Infinity Gauntlet
Thor: The Cameo World
During the mid-credits scene of Thor: The Dark World, we were introduced to The Collector, played by Benicio Del Toro. In the scene, Volstagg and Lady Sif (Adam's crush) bring "The Aether," to The Collector, for him to add to his vast collection of things. While walking through his "trophy room," Lady Sif passes by a giant glass container, holding something very ugly, that also looks very familiar (pictured below). While we can't be 100% sure that this "cocoon" is Adam Warlock's cocoon or even a cocoon at all, let us put the pieces together.
In this scene, we learn that "The Aether" and "The Tesseract" are, in fact, Infinity stones (or gases or liquids or whatever retcon Marvel Studios has planned). There is no character, other than Thanos, who is so closely connected to the Infinity stones, than Adam Warlock. Also, we know The Collector will be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy. If you are going to introduce Adam Warlock, what better way to do it than introducing him in the movie starring his most current team? Also, Lady Sif (so lovely) could have been put in this scene as a clue, considering Adam Warlock kidnaps her after breaking out of his cocoon. I'm not a fan of love triangles, but watching Adam Warlock and Thor go toe-to-toe over Lady Sif would be very satisfying.
Now, I don't think that Adam Warlock will be playing a large role in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. We haven't gotten any casting news on Adam Warlock, or any official word that he will be appearing at all, but because of his connection to Thanos, The Infinity Gauntlet, and The Guardians, it is more than likely. At most, he will probably show up in the third act of the film.
Now, there are many ways that Marvel Studios could introduce Warlock, but I would like to see something like this:
At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, it is revealed that The Collector has been working for Thanos, in order to get the all of the Infinity Gems. While standing in The Collector's trophy room, The Collector and Nebula begin speaking of Thanos' plans to take over the universe. Suddenly, a light appears, almost blinding both of them. While squinting, they look over towards the light to see where it is coming from. The glass surrounding the cocoon shatters in every direction. The cocoon opens and we see the silhouette of a man floating in the light. The Collector begins to stammer. "Who...who are you?!" he asks. As the light begins to dissipate, we see the figure fall slowly to the ground. On the ground, he is kneeling over. As he raises his head slowly, we see [insert famous actor here] as Adam Warlock. With an somber look on his face, he simply says, "I am Him." Boom. Credits.
How would you like to see Adam Warlock introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy? Who would you like to see play him? Drop us a comment below and let us know. And get creative. Maybe we can give Marvel Studios some good ideas.

Behind-the-Scenes: Vin Diesel Voicing Groot
Vin Diesel recently posted the picture above on his Facebook page with the following caption:
Some of you may remember the character I voiced back in 1998… Last month I had the opportunity to voice a new character, on the Disney lot… and I was shocked to see the same sound engineer, Doc, who was there when Brad Bird was directing me 15 years earlier, as the Iron Giant. As artists we are susceptible to clocking omens… and this was a great sign. As I worked, with James Gunn, breathing life into GROOT… I saw more and more of the film… wow. /smile
P.s. This summer's Guardians of the Galaxy, is going to blow you away… Grateful for the opportunity to make magic...
Sounds like Vin is already finished recording his part as Groot and is very excited about it. Personally, I think he's going to do an excellent job.

Star-Lord: Annihilation Conquest Compilation On The Way
The modern incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy came together in 2008 during a Marvel Cosmic event called Annihilation: Conquest. During the event, there was a four-issue series called Star-Lord: Annihilation: Conquestby Keith Giffen. During those four issues, Star-Lord was introduced to Rocket Raccoon, Mantis, Bug, and Groot (back when Groot could say anything) and nothing has been the same ever since. Now, on February 5th, 2014, Marvel is releasing a compilation of those four issues. Here is the description:
Peter Quill is Star-Lord once more, but will he embrace his legacy? The techno-organic Phalanx have overrun the galaxy, and it's time for Star-Lord and his ragtag team of cosmic cult favorites — including Bug, Captain Universe, Deathcry, Mantis, Groot and Rocket Raccoon — to suit up and become legends! But this no-win, no-tech suicide mission starts off bad and rapidly gets worse. As hordes of the Phalanx close in, one team member might have to make the supreme sacrifice!Relive the birth of the motley crew that became the Guardians of the Galaxy!Collecting ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST — STARLORD #1-4.For those of you who haven't read it, you are in for a treat. And for those of you who have read it, it'll be nice to have all four issues together for once. Thanks to Chris Shelton for the heads up. Are you excited for this? Drop a comment below!

Michael Rooker Confirms No Red Fin for Yondu
Months ago, we saw pictures from the Guardians of the Galaxy set of Michael Rooker as Yondu, one of the original members of the Guardians in the comics. In those pictures, Yondu is seen without his signature red fin mohawk from the comics. Because of those pictures, many die-hard Galaxians (GotG fans) wondered if the giant red fin would be added in post-production. Now, we have official word from Mr. Michael Rooker himself, from his conversation with Unrendered podcast, that Yondu will not be sporting the red fin. Thanks to ComicBook.com for the quotes. Check them out below:
“As you can see from some of the photos out there, I’m not in a loincloth. I don’t have a major, major fin thing that goes down my back. We haven’t visually gone with the way that Yondu was in the comics.”
When asked about the look of the film, Rooker said, “Lovely, beautiful colors. What do you expect? It is a superhero movie. And I hope that you see it, and you’re going to be going ‘I’m going to see this again.’ That’s what I hope."
What do you think about Yondu losing the red fin? Do you think it could have been pulled off? Drop a comment below!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Toys at London Toy Fair 2014
Right now, Toy Fair 2014 is going on in London. For those who don't know, the toy fair is a giant convention, where many companies look for upcoming products to sell in their stores. With GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY coming out in August, we expect there to be a few pieces of information/pictures of GotG merchandise premiering at this show. We will be updating this post over the next two days with any information we can get our hands on. Check out what we've got so far:
- The official Toy Fair Twitter page recently tweeted: "LEGO announces three exclusive Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy play-sets scheduled for release June 1st 2014" while Brick Fanatics had this to say:"3 Guardians of the Galaxy sets. 76021, 76019, 76020. Only licensees could see these. Luckily Disney were on a tour behind us and I caught a glimpse of a brick-built Groot and a giant blue and yellow ship."Sounds cool, right?Looks like we'll be getting the sets two months before the film's release. Here's a previously released pic from the LEGO catalog:

Stan Lee Confirms No GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Cameo
Marvel legend Stan Lee has been known to make appearances in well...pretty much every Marvel film. When asked by Dweebcast whether he would making an appearance in Marvel Studios' upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film, Stan 'The Man' had this to say:
"No, I'm afraid not. That's the one group I didn't create. I didn't create Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm not even sure who they all are. I can't wait to see the movie."
I guess Stan is forgetting that he created Groot. Oh well! We will be missing your cameo, Stan. What cameo would you have liked to see Stan Lee make? As an alien, maybe? Drop a comment below.

ALL-NEW X-MEN #22 Review (GotG Crossover)
by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Stuart Immonen
As someone who has not exactly been keeping up with the comic, All-New X-Men, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect with its Guardians of the Galaxy crossover event, The Trial of Jean Grey. I had heard that ANXM was dealing with time-travel, but I wasn't exactly sure how it would connect to GotG.
Well, the issue starts off with the original X-Men team (from the past) living in the present (confusing, right?). If you read everything, including the introduction page, you won't be lost. This issue does a good job catching you up with what has happened in All-New X-Men so far. Without giving too much away, the X-Men are attacked by alien forces, which is why the Guardians show up.
First off, don't expect too much of Guardians of the Galaxy in this issue. Make no mistake about it, this is very much an X-Men comic. It mostly deals (superbly, I must say) with the relationship between Cyclops and Jean Grey. We will definitely be seeing more Rocket Raccoon and Groot action in the issues to come. This issue serves as a brief introduction between the two teams. It's a great introduction to the storyline, however, and it made me a little anxious to see what happens next. Thankfully, we only have to wait one more week before Guardians of the Galaxy #11 (part two of this story) is released.
The writing in this issue by Brian Michael Bendis was great, with humor that comes from character interactions and not one-liners. It made me want to go back and read the last few issues of ANXM, just to become more familiar with the story. The illustrations by Stuart Immonen are very good as well. So good that I couldn't help but wish that he illustrated some more Guardians of the Galaxy in the future.
Overall, a solid issue, but like I said, don't expect much Guardians action.
Raiting: 4.5/5
