Co.Create recently posted a write-up on David White, the special effects makeup designer on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. White had a large part in shaping the film's look, spending lots of time helping James Gunn create the looks for "Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Yondu, Korath, and the film’s numerous aliens." Throughout the film's planning process, "over 1,000 prosthetic makeup applications and over 2,000 molds of yellow, blue, and pink aliens were created." EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Actor Alexis Rodney, 'Moloka Dar' From GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

We recently got a chance to talk to up-and-coming actor Alexis Rodney, who played Kyln prison inmate Moloka Dar in Guardians of the Galaxy(best known for his "that was my favorite knife" line). Rodney talked a little bit about getting his role, as well as the filming process.

GuardTheGalaxy:"How did you get the role of Moloka Dar in Guardians of the Galaxy?"

Alexis Rodney:"I remember it vividly. It was around mid-March of 2013, and I was filming on a low budget British feature film at the time. I was on a night shoot when I received a late evening e-mail through from my agent. It was all extremely top secret, and I instructed to sign a non disclosure agreement, just to receive my audition pages. In fact, it was so top secret, they wouldn't even tell me what the project was called. The only information I had was that it was a Marvel project going under the code name (Full Tilt). That was the only motivation I needed. My inner twelve-year-old came to life. With that in mind, I prepared as much as one could and went in to read with the casting director. Those of you that have seen the film will know that Moloka Dar has a penchant for knives. Well, the night before my Guardians meeting, I was tucking into some food on the set of the film I was working on, and I decided I would keep the plastic knife I was eating with, and use it in my audition. I've never been an advocate for mimicry. The casting director looked a bit shocked when I whipped out a plastic knife in an aggressive manner, but he rolled with it, as did I.

Weeks went by and nothing. I was "nigh on sure" I had screwed my chance of being in a Marvel movie. Maybe it was the plastic knife. Maybe I did too much, or too little. Actor self doubt started to kick in. I was just about to finish on the Independent film I was working on, and I was staring a stint of unemployment square in the face, when I got the call from my agent. Bellowing down the phone, I could barely hear him. I had got the part. He was elated for me, as was I. I'll never forget that phone call. I was about to go from a UK Independent film, made for the equivalent of two hundred thousand dollars, to a Marvel blockbuster costing around two hundred million dollars. An actor's life."

First Appearance - Thanos #8(2004)
GTG:"Did you come up a backstory for Moloka Dar?"

AR:"Yes, I always create a backstory as part of my character work, but in short, it's very rarely something I reveal! Sorry." *laughs*

GTG:"What was the makeup process like?"

AR:"It's a slow and arduous process undertaken by some of the best makeup artists in the world. It's known in the business as "SMUFX," an acronym for "special makeup effects." But way before shooting started, there were numerous tests on teeth and contact lenses to make sure the right look was achieved for Moloka. The first full costume and makeup test took upwards of four hours. After day two, I learned the art of falling asleep while having my face prodded for four hours. It's quite an art, believe me. After a few days the makeup artists were able, through practice, to cut the time down from four to two-and-a-half hours. The prosthetic skin has a feeling of what I would imagine ten layers of somebody else's skin would feel like. Not great feeling at first, but we had a movie to make, so I very quickly put the feeling out of my mind. Lastly, the contact lenses are full eye lenses (they cover the whites also). I have sensitive eyes, so much so, I struggle to open them under water, so this was tough! The makeup, as I'm sure you'll all agree, is outer-world class. Bad joke, sorry, had to go there."

GTG:"Tell us about your first day on the "Kyln prison" set."

AR:"My first day on set was a day of camera tests. All the Guardians and my good self. It was like first day at school, but a really strange intergalactic school. I think everyone was nervous with excitement. A week later I had my first official shooting day. [When] I entered into "the Kyln," it was the most jaw-droppingly amazing set I've ever stepped foot on. Fully working biometric prison cells, four levels of the highest quality British Steel and craftsmanship. It was a real thing of beauty and a world away from my preconceived ideas of green screen. This was pure theatre. I had an immediate sense that we were onto a winner."

GTG:"What was it like working with Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista?"

AR:"I've been asked this a lot. I think I'm running out of superlatives to use. But here goes. Dave is such a colossus of a man, that I imagine his sheer size alone is intimidating to most, but in truth, he is a gentle, kind soul. I spent a lot of time in-between scenes chewing the fat with Dave. He gave me a shout out in an interview recently also. A true gent. Zoe is very graceful and poised, reminiscent of Hollywood stars of days gone by. So I found her transformation into Gamora so fascinating. She is FIERCE in the role, but lovely when the cameras aren't rolling. Chris Pratt, handling his first major film role, and did so with aplomb. He's a dude, the kind of guy you'd happily sink a couple of beers with. Funny, affable, but always on his A-game. All in all, they all made me feel very welcome."

GTG:"Were there any scenes you were surprised were cut from the film?"

Exclusive concept art of Moloka Dar
AR:"I think the film is perfect. It gets better every time I see it. I'm already on three viewings and rising. So no. I'm sure there will be some great stuff on the DVD though."

GTG:"Do you hope for your character to reappear in Guardians of the Galaxy 2?"

AR:"Firstly, to work with the inimitable James Gunn again, it could be any job. If he opens a car wash I'm in. Seriously though, what can I say, the man is so generous, skilled, passionate about the work and "Obama" cool under the pressure of 200 million dollars worth of untested franchise. Guardians is bringing so many people joy, including myself, so.....in a word, YES!"

GTG:"What's next for Alexis Rodney?"

AR:"I can't say too much, but I've just been filming out in Iceland on the new Ridley Scott produced Halo, based on the computer game of same said name. I play the role of 'Arris' and I really think the Halo fans out there are in for a treat."

Alexis Rodney in upcoming Halo: Nightfall series

Alexis also wished to give a shout out: "Just to let you guys know that behind every great director, there's a great assistant. James Gunn's assistant, Simon Hatt, is such a great guy and really supported me throughout the process. A legend."

A HUGE thanks goes to Alexis Rodney (here's his IMDB page) for agreeing to do the interview. He really is a class-act, and super talented as well. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the future.Make sure you follow him on Twitter @AlexisRodney. Also, drop Alexis a comment below and let him know what you thought of 'Moloka Dar' in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Next Tuesday, we will be seeing TONS of concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy, when Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art of the Movie is released. Apparently, someone got their hands on an advanced copy, because an image from the book has been making the rounds. The image features concept art for a member of the 'Nova Corps'. This design was not used in the movie, but what makes it interesting is that it looks very similar to the current comic incarnation of Nova (Sam Alexander). Could we possibly see different types of Nova in the Guardians sequel? Only time will tell!

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art of the Movie Slipcase can be ordered now on Amazon. It is expected to be released next Tuesday, August 12th, so go ahead and get yours now (click the image below)!

Why 'Come And Get Your Love' By Redbone Is A Perfect Song For GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (Editorial)

By Cameron Logan

(Warning: SPOILERS) When Redbone's 'Come and Get Your Love' was playing during Peter Quill's dance scene at the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy, I wondered to myself "why that song?" Yes, it's a catchy tune, and you can't help but smile when you hear it, but I'm always looking for a deeper meaning. On my second viewing of Guardians of the Galaxy, it hit me! Now let me preface this by saying...bear with me here. Okay. Here's my theory:

The Orb is singing 'Come and Get Your Love' to Peter.

Yes, I know it sounds crazy, but think about it. Peter Quill has been raised by Yondu and his crazy band of Ravagers. Peter says it himself that Yondu was the closest thing to family that he had. However, I wouldn't say that Yondu loved Peter by any means of the imagination. In fact, no one, since Peter's mother, had truly loved him. Because of this Peter had become selfish, only watching out for himself.

When Peter Quill begins listening to 'Come and Get Your Love' he is just within reach of the orb, and he knows it. He puts on the headphones and begins playing that song. It's no coincidence that the song's main hook features the words "come and get" while Peter is "coming to get" the orb. However, the most interesting part is...the orb eventually leads Peter to "love". If it weren't for the orb, Peter would have never met Gamora, Drax, Rocket,or Groot. The orb is responsible for Peter finally finding a family; finding love.

At the end of the film, when Peter finally opens the present from his mother, it's because he finally has a family again. He can finally let go of his mother's hand, because he has "new hands" to hold onto now. Now I don't know if this is what director James Gunn intended, but next time you watch Guardians of the Galaxy, when Redbone's 'Come and Get Your Love' starts playing, maybe you'll see that song in a whole new light.

If you don't own it yet, you can purchase or download Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol.1 on Amazon.

SEQUEL: Who Would YOU Like To See In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2? (Editorial)

$

By Dan Payne
Yes, I know that the excitement of the CURRENT movie still hasn't worn off. Hell, *I* still can't stop talking about it. But that doesn't mean we aren't already eagerly awaiting the sequel. Especially with James Gunn's statement that he plans to add at least one more member to the team from the comics... that's got me, and I'm sure a lot of you, really thinking about both who wasn't in the first movie that should be put in, and who could play them.

So I sat down, and started thinking about some of my favorite cosmic characters that either aren't tied up by another studio, or who could at least be potentially purchased before then. I admit... just for the sake of conversation, I went REALLY outside the box on some of these. Take a look at my list, then let me know if you agree, disagree, or have your own ideas!

15. Cosmo

This one is so far down the list ONLY because he technically already appeared. Still, it was only a cameo, and he didn't talk. We want Cosmo the way he was in the DnA run of the comics. He could be a huge help to the team, especially if they eventually take on Knowhere as their base. Keep Fred the Dog though, he's flarking ADORABLE. But the voice? Only one man could properly give voice to our beloved Cosmo. And sorry, fellow Galaxians: it's not Nathan Fillion. If any of you ever watched the show Six Feet Under, you know EXACTLY who I'm talking about.

Ed O'Ross ("Six Feet Under")

14. Adam Warlock

Another one that's only so far down the list because he was technically SORT-OF in the first movie. Don't remember seeing him? Well, you did and didn't. He wasn't there... but James Gunn confirmed that his cocoon WAS. See the picture below:

Still, he's a VITAL part of the cosmic storylines in the comics, and is almost essential to an Infinity Gauntlet story arc. And the casting has to be perfect for the character to work. You need someone who can play stoic, stuck-up, sarcastic, noble, and even creepy all at different times. Who do I think should play him?

Alexander Skarsgard ("True Blood")

13-11. Spaceknights of Galador
13. ROM

Yes, technically Hasbro/Parker Bros. owns the rights to him. And yes, they've shown no desire to sell to Marvel. But I can't give up hope here. Rom is a FANTASTIC character, and my personal favorite since childhood. The Spaceknights of Galador would make an amazing addition to the new cosmic arm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a small appearance (like the Nova Corps) would be spectacular. And who to play him? You'd need someone who's got a following, since Rom himself is fairly unknown now. Someone who can easily juggle silent strength and outbursts of emotion. The perfect actor for that?

Zachary Quinto ("Star Trek", "Heroes")

12. Starshine
When the earth woman Rom fell in love with became a Spaceknight, it was in the form of the warrior Starshine. Look at that armor and picture how awesome it could look onscreen. Even without Rom, if the Spaceknights appeared, Starshine would be cool to see. To play her properly, you need someone who's beautiful, but who also has a toughness to her that is clear to everyone. My choice?
Lauren Cohan ("The Walking Dead")

11. Ikon
A member of the third generation of Spaceknights, Ikon is simply put, a total bad-ass. She picked a fight with The Annihilators just to see what they were capable of, even while managing to come on to Quasar.  For her, you need someone capable of managing to balance bad-ass with flirty. My pick to play her?
Scout Taylor-Compton ("Halloween", "The Runaways")

10. Shuma-Gorath
A legendary creature of sheer destruction, Shuma-Gorath would make a little-known but FINE addition to the MCU villains. If done properly, it would be like having the Guardians face a cross between Godzilla and Cthulu. For some reason, for YEARS I've only pictured one man voicing this beast:
Christopher Lee ("The Lord of the Rings", "Dracula")

9. Lylla
Rocket's primary love interest, who normally I'd scoff at putting in a sequel if not for two things: 1., she's mentioned briefly in the current film, in Rocket's rap sheet. 2, if they give Rocket a spin-off eventually, she'd be a great part of the cast. She's the perfect Princess Leia type: a damsel in distress who can also kick ass when she needs to. The perfect voice for her?
Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Buffy The Vampire Slayer", "Cruel Intentions")

8. Morg The Executioner
What's that, you say? We can't have Galactus in these movies? Or the Silver Surfer? Well... how about another one of the former Heralds of Galactus? One who's movie rights most likely still belongs to Marvel? Morg would be a great villain, like Ronan in terms of power, except a creature of pure rage and hatred. He wouldn't really have to talk much... just be a rabid animal for the primarily villain to throw at our heroes. And much like Drax, you need someone like a wrestler to look the part. So, my pick?
Brock Lesnar (Former UFC and WWE Champion)

7. Ego The Living Planet
I admit, this wouldn't be for much more than a small cameo... but sort of like the first time we saw Knowhere, can you IMAGINE seeing a planet with a face on-screen? It would be awe-inspiring. Obviously, nobody would be playing the part, as I doubt he'd talk, and would be entirely CGI.

6.  Beta Ray Bill
You want a nice little indirect connection to the rest of the MCU? Look no further than introducing Beta Ray Bill. An alien Korbinite who, eventually, is given the same powers as Thor by Odin of Asgard, and develops an interesting relationship with Lady Sif. I've always pictured Bill having a very dignified yet tortured sounding voice, and since he'd likely be CGI, a great voice for him would be...
Mads Mikkelsen ("Hannibal")

5. The Dire Wraiths
Sadly, Fox has the rights to using The Skrulls in their movies. Which leaves Marvel Studios without an intimidating race of shapeshifters. Or does it? The Dire Wraiths, introduced in the pages of ROM (Yes, I'm too into ROM. I know this. Let's move on.), have since turned up in many other Marvel titles, including Annihilators. Add the fact that they're completely TERRIFYING in appearance, and you could have a great villainous race in the making.

4. Martyr
While she began as Quasar, Phyla-Vell would be better served in a movie being Martyr from the start, as opposed to having to get into the entire story of Quasar. Face it, with Gamora as the only female, the Guardians need another female face, which is why three of the top four picks of mine are women. Martyr would be a total wild card, someone the rest of the team would never be entirely comfortable around due to her quick temper and the fact that she can be pretty batshit occasionally.
So to play her, we'd need someone who can be equally efficient at playing it calm, bitchy, and total killer. This was one of my fastest picks, honestly.
Emma Roberts ("American Horror Story", "Scream 4")

3. Angela
One of my favorite characters in the current GOTG run, Neil Gaiman's Angela has been fantastic as she's formed a bond with Gamora as essentially the two most deadly women in the galaxy (Rocket even nicknamed them The Murder Girls). Angela would be a tricky character to bring to life. Much like Drax, you'd need to balance stoic deadliness with attitude and subtle humor. While tempted to go with a natural redhead, I can't think of anyone better suited to play this part than...
Jennifer Morrison ("Once Upon A Time")

2. Mantis
Easily one of the most requested characters for a sequel, we ALL love Mantis. She's beautiful, intelligent, sweet (she even cares for Little Groot!), and most importantly, she gives the team a very powerful precog. She was without a doubt one of the highlights of the DnA run in the comics, and a character that has a special place in the hearts of most longtime Galaxians.
Another one of my easier picks, I had this one in mind before I even started the article.
Jamie Chung ("Sucker Punch", "Once Upon A Time")

And, my number one pick for a character we MUST see in the sequel...

1. Michael Korvac
Face it: Most of the really great cosmic villains are either belonging to another studio or already connected in some way with The Infinity Gauntlet story. But a classic, classic story could be told using this one villain, who'd gone forgotten for many years until recently. He's got different origins depending on whether you've seen his story in comics or on one of the Marvel animated series, so the long and short of it is: he's a humanoid who becomes possessed of godlike power, who in the end turns out to be very much misunderstood. His story could be not only very dramatic, but with some canon-tweaking, it could easily lead into Thanos gaining the final Infinity Stone. My pick to play this complex, dangerous character?
Benedict Cumberbatch ("Star Trek: Into Darkness", "Sherlock Holmes")

Hopefully you enjoyed seeing my wish list for the Guardians sequel. Any one of these characters being involved would thrill me. Whether you agree with them or disagree, I look forward to seeing your opinions!

A lot goes in to making a film. However, before the cameras start rolling, before the actors start reciting their lines, a group of concept artists are hard at work designing the look of the film. A few of the concept artists behind Guardians of the Galaxy have released some of their art for the film online. GOTG SEQUEL SPECULATION: Star-lord's Father (Editorial)

$
0
0
By Chris S.
So I’m sure if you are reading this, you have seen Guardians of the Galaxy by now, right? If you have seen it, go to Step 2. If you haven't seen it, go to Step 1.

Step 1: I would like you to close your laptop, shut down your desktop, or whatever else you may be reading this on, drive to your local theater, and buy a ticket to the next showtime. Seriously, why have you not seen it yet?

Step 2: Continue reading and enjoy my speculation/prediction to who Star Lord’s father will be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Hopefully by now, you will have seen the movie. In which case, you will now know that they have dropped a few hints regarding Star Lord’s father. I have seen some speculation that perhaps Warlock will be his father, or Starfox, or Captain Marvel, or “blah blah blah”. I really don’t see any of these characters as Peter’s dad. So I’m locking in my bets now. Based on the hints we got from the movie, I doubt they will be using J’son as his father. It seems this is going to be a big part of the plot for the sequel. All the hints that were dropped in the movie fit one character perfectly, in my opinion at least, and that character is: Starhawk.

Here are the four reasons I believe Starhawk will be Star Lord’s father in Guardians 2:

1. Meredith said that Peter’s father was an “angel” and “composed of pure light”. According to Marvel.com’s entry for Starhawk: “Starhawk can generate luminous energy for various purposes. He can surround his body with a nimbus of light, providing simple illumination, up to blinding intensity. He can cast beams of light as spotlights of flares. By shifting his light beam's frequency, he can generate intense heat beams, or coherent light beams that strike their targets with tremendous concussive force. He uses a nimbus of intermingled photons and anti-gravitons to levitate or fly at great speeds”. Anyone who has seen Starhawk can see where Meredith could come to the conclusion of Starhawk being an angel. Not only is he “from the sky”, but he has those “wings” of light. In addition to all of this, he has the aliases of “The Light” and “The Giver of Light”.

2. Yondu tells Kraglin that Peter’s father was a jackass. In the comics, Starhawk gave himself the name, “The One Who Knows.” He is a selfish character as well, and much like Star-lord in the DnA run, he manipulated events that would lead to the formation of the original Guardians. All of this seems to be reason enough for the MCU version of Yondu to think he is a jackass. Though, it would probably take a lot less than that.

3. Nova Prime reveals to the Guardians and Peter that he is only "half-terran", and that the other half is “something ancient” and that they have never seen it before. Although he was born in our time, and is half-terran as well, it would be easy for James Gunn to recreate an origin story for Starhawk, much like how Yondu was very different from his comic counterpart. Although the origin would need to be changed, there are many things that could be pulled from the comic version of Starhawk. Such as having an incredibly long lifespan and continually being reborn into his infant body. I can see Marvel having him as an ancient alien being that has been reborn continually throughout time. Just leave out the bits about getting powers from a hawk god, and being a merged form of himself and his wife. Yeah, I think that would be a lot less confusing.

4. During an interview with AMC, James Gunn said that he “loved Starhawk”. And rightfully so I might add. Starhawk is the easiest character to translate to the big screen from the original Guardians. Charlie-27 would be another Hulk, Martinex would require too much CGI and probably end up resembling Iceman from Days of Future Past, and you can’t have Vance Astro without Cap’s shield. Hopefully they will utilize a modified version of his costume from the 2008 series (seen above).

What do you guys think? Do you agree? Leave a comment below.

REVIEW: Guardians Of The Galaxy Hat And Shirt From SuperHeroStuff.com!

By Dan Payne
Hey everyone...
www.superheroreport.com

I recently agreed to review some products on this site for the great guys at SuperHeroStuff.com. I can't even begin to describe how many shirts, hats, and keychains I saw on their site that I'd love to get... they have a REALLY nice selection of Guardians of the Galaxy merchandise! But for the purposes of this article? I'll be reviewing two items in particular.

The first (and honestly, one of my favorite pieces of GOTG merch so far) is the Guardians of The Galaxy Cosmic Neo 39Thirty Cap.

I thought it looked amazing in the pictures, but let me tell you all: the pictures do it NO justice. I love caps, and have been wearing them most of my life, and I can honestly say that this is one of the most visually stunning caps I've ever owned. It's made of a sturdy, stretchy material that allows it to fit your head perfectly, without ever being too tight or too loose, and the black and blue colors on it compliment each other wonderfully. I can say without a doubt that while I wish caps weren't as expensive as they are (remember, I come from the days when you could buy a brand new cap with your favorite sports team's logo on it for about $12-$15 max!) the price ($27.99) is actually cheaper than New Era charges for other Marvel caps on their official web site. If you're going to invest in any of the GOTG caps that are out there, this is the one.

The second item is the Guardians of The Galaxy Movie Poster T-Shirt.

Currently, the website is sold out of this shirt, but they DO seem to get shirts back in stock, so definitely keep checking with them if you're after this one. Let me say this right up front: my wife and I bought a couple of GOTG shirts to wear to opening night of the movie from Hot Topic. Those shirts were over $20 apiece, and while nice, are made of a very thin material. This shirt, at $19.99, is actually made much thicker and more durable. It also is a much better fitting shirt.

Overall, I was very happy with both products, as well as the quick delivery once the order went out. I'll certainly be buying from them in the future, and you should too!
