REVIEW: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is A Funny, Engaging, Modern Space Opera (Spoilers)

After running this site for a year and a half, I have to say my expectations for Guardians of the Galaxy were pretty high. It felt like Christmas Eve, sitting in the theater, waiting for the film to start. I couldn't wait to finally open my present. Once I did, well...what a great present it was! Guardians of the Galaxy is by far the most fun I've had at the movies since watching The Avengers back in 2012. Marvel Studios has possibly even topped The Avengers when it comes to rewatchability. This is a film I feel like I could watch five times this weekend, and never get tired of it. Who knows? I probably will watch it five times this weekend (just joking....or am I?).

Now, I'll be honest. I am the creator of a Guardians of the Galaxy fan site, so obviously I am a little biased. This review is more of a list of pros than cons, so don't expect much criticism. Here we go (Spoilers after the jump)...

When the film starts off with Peter Quill as a boy in 1988 on Earth, his mother is on her death bed. Not since the movie Up have I teared up so early on in a film. The film quickly moves from the harsh reality of losing a loved one to the wonder of sci-fi within the blink of an eye, but never once do you stop feeling something. A lot of props go out to Wyatt Oleff, who played young Peter Quill, for conveying so much emotion in that scene. This kid will undoubtedly be a big star.

Twenty-something years later, the introduction of the film's movie title to the song 'Come and Get Your Love' by Redbone lets you know that you're in for something good. The juxtaposition between the seriousness of the title, and the hilariousness of Star-lord dancing is one of the most memorable moments in the film. We quickly find out that Star-lord is stealing an ancient artifact, which may or may not be an infinity stone (it is).

Three of the other Guardians (Gamora, Rocket, and Groot) become acquainted with Quill on Xandar, during an all-out battle for the orb. I thought the introduction of each character was very effective, especially Rocket's, while he harshly judges many citizens of Xandar (including Stan Lee). It's during this scene that we get a sense of Rocket and Groot's relationship. Rocket is the loveable, rude leader, while Groot is the loveable, sweet follower. Their scenes together work so well, because you really get a sense that these two have known each other for a very long time.

Once our "heroes" arrive in prison, they begin to become allies, but they still don't necessarily like each other. Drax is introduced as wanting to kill Gamora, but Star-lord manages to talk him out of this. This may be the first moment that we see Peter do something truly heroic in the film, risking life and limb for someone else.

The prison escape sequence does a fantastic job of showing Rocket as the brains of the team. His ability to tinker with technology makes him one of the smartest characters we've seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Once the Guardians break free from prison, they head to Knowhere, which I'd love to see more of in the sequel. The Collector's prison is something that I would love to pause every shot of once I get the Blu-ray, as it's undoubtedly a treasure trove of hidden alien races from the Marvel Universe.

Seeing Cosmo appear in the film had to be one of my favorite moments. When Rocket and Cosmo growled at each other, my brain almost exploded. We NEED more Cosmo in the sequel. Please James Gunn, make it happen.

Each member of the team gets their time to shine, whether it's through comedic moments or dramatic. At no point in the film did I not want to see these character succeed, although they did plenty of bad things along the way.

The villains are effective as well. Lee Pace as Ronan was possibly my favorite villain of any Marvel Studios film, achieving a presence throughout the film as someone who no one would dare cross. Nebula (Karen Gillan) also shines through the film as one of the most compelling villains I've ever seen. I can't wait to find out more about her in the sequel. She obviously still has good in her.

Once the Guardians band together in the film's climax, we really get a sense that these characters have grown to love each other. They finally have found a family and a place to belong. The scene where Drax begins comforting Rocket, who is crying over the loss of Groot, is especially heart wrenching.

The film continues to pull at the heart strings when Peter Quill finally opens the present that his mother gave him on her death bed. It's another mixtape, which will give us more tunes to groove to when Guardians of the Galaxy 2 rolls around in 2017.

Overall, I loved this film, and I thought it was really true to the tone of the comics. Galaxians will undoubtedly love it. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and see it in the theater. If you have seen it, you already know how special it is.

Rating: 10/10

"I am Groot!" It certainly looked like a gamble from the very beginning, but Marvel's latest release Guardians of the Galaxy has the box office in the bag, as the opening night scored $11.2 Million, beating out Marvel's other release this year, Captain America: The Winter Soldierand Fox's X-Men: Days Of Future Past. This is very surprising for a first film, so it seems clear that Marvel isn't done with the franchise yet, as they've already announced a sequel. The film is in theaters now, so will you be watching? Let us know in the usual place!

REVIEW: Stop Staring At The Screen And Go See Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY!

By: Neil Davenport
Note: I am not a John McClane [Die Hard] fan of Marvel. I am only a lover of good film.

Unfortunately, I have a theory based on the idea that too much of a good thing is unhealthy; not that I wish for any such occurrence to happen, but Marvel is someday going produce a film (which is woven within the Avenger web) that is not going to reach or exceed my expectations. Fortunately, I am proud to say that my theory is so far proven false. Hands and raccoon paws down: along Iron Man, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and The Avengers,Guardians of the Galaxy is one of Marvel’s best films yet!

Now, because I am a lover of good film, here is a list of things I did not like.
1. Information Overload: I understand why Marvel edited the film the way they did in establishing the characters, however amongst the first 15 minutes of introducing not only nine individuals, but their motives and their background, it was a bit much for a non-fanboy (or girls) to handle.

2. Montage of Planets: This Star Wars rendition is an attachment of the information overload.

3. Post Credit Scene: I believe I speak for most confused audience members when I say I am a tad disappointed in the post credit scene. I did not enjoy Cosmo licking the Collector’s face (a sliver of fanboy knowledge) and when Howard the Duck appeared instead of an Avenger member it kind of saddened me.

4. There is an “I” in team: When Nova Prime briefly told Peter he was only half human it sparked a reason for a sequel. However, when she mentioned that it was the only logical reason for him to wield the Power Gem (instead of the team’s goodness overcoming the grand destructive nature of the stone), it basically said that being human is not enough to be a hero.

Now because I am a lover of good film, here is a list of things I enjoyed.

1. Rocket’s Reason of Logic: Even though he is probably the rudest, crudest, and greediest Guardian of them all (which is what a raccoon is by nature), Rocket was the only one with commonsense. For example, in the scene where Groot pulls Drax out of the pool of yellow brain fluid, Rocket lectures on two no pity points. One: If you want to kill someone, it is stupid of you to risk the lives of others when you decide to obtain your goal. Two: Stop complaining about your losses in live because everyone has lost a love of some kind.

2. The Music and the Color Palette: The music was fantastic in setting the mood for a fun ride. Enough said. The color pallet was wonderfully filled; too many superhero films have recently been dull and dark.

3. Drax…the un-metaphorical side of all of us: I, as well a number of people suffer from the disorder of not being able to say what I would like to say 100% of the time. Drax’s “literal” dialog was, I feel, along the level of Groot, one of the strongest (no pun intended) character traits for the comedic relief.

4. There is no “I” in team: Continuing on the fourth point above, towards the ending boss scene, when the team of misfit toys all hold the Power Gem together and share the pain to then destroy Ronan, it is at that moment the team truly becomes Guardians. By them banding together and absorbing the stone’s energy to use it for good, the essence of their selflessness is seen to be a greater source of power that can triumph over anything evil, even an Infinity Stone.
As an overview, Guardianswas a blast of fun! To me it was the ultimate “underdog” story that was a complete spoof of how a superhero is to be portrayed. The film was like The Avengers, but turned on its head, proving that even a clan of great disorderly cons, whose only motivation is either greed or vengeance, can join forces and defeat a recognizable evil greater than themselves. Though the film was a bit predicable, Guardians was an exceptional story that featured not only depth and character growth, but also summarized the idea of there being goodness within even an outlaw, an assassin, a destroyer, a tree, and a raccoon.

REVIEW: Did GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Live Up To The Hype? (SPOILERS)

By Daniel Payne
I won't lie.

As excited as I've been about Guardians of the Galaxy, I was also very worried. For several reasons. First? I've seen some of my all-time favorite characters absolutely butchered onscreen before (I'm looking at you, Venom-in-Spiderman 3 and Bane-in-Batman & Robin), and so I was nervous about having justice done to Rocket and Groot. Second, I've basically spent the last year annoying the hell out of everyone I know over this movie, telling them it's gonna be the must-see movie of 2014 and such... and I was afraid of having overhyped it, or worse, having it be terrible and looking like a moron.

So imagine my immense happiness at being able to say: I literally loved everything about it. Even the few things I'd have done differently can't really be called complaints, because I completely adored the film.

Random thoughts on it after the break...

From the not-so-subtle Raiders of the Lost Ark homage at the beginning, I knew immediately this was going to be fantastic.

Thank you, James Gunn, for sticking Cosmo in, even as a cameo. One of my favorite Marvel cosmic characters, and one I was certain I'd NEVER see in a movie. AND HE WAS ADORABLE.

SO many little things that made me happy, from Cosmo and Rocket growling at each other, to Yondu's arrow, to Rocket's drunken emotional meltdown, to HOWARD THE DUCK... perfection, all of it.

The special effects were amazing, and the scenery and colors were nothing short of breathtaking.

The entire theater cheered when Thanos first appeared, which as a lifelong fan of the character, made me smile.

Gamora definitely looked better than she did in the trailers. Still not quite as good as I'd have liked, but definitely better. I definitely think they could have made her more fearsome, play up the "most dangerous woman in the galaxy" thing a little more, but Zoe played her perfectly with what she had.

You've been Thanos'd (so hard)

Dave Bautista as Drax was easily the most pleasant surprise of the whole movie. I expected him to be a glaring weak link, but he did tremendously. I was extremely impressed with him. I can't tell you how much I loved him stating that now he wants to kill Thanos. And his comforting of Rocket? Fantasticly subtle and sweet.

Star-Lord was great. I can't emphasize that enough. They amplified a few of his personality traits, like his wise-ass nature and his narcissism, but in a way that made the character even better, and truly capable of carrying a movie by himself if need be.

Now. The big two. Rocket and Groot. Let's just get this out of the way first: James Gunn has given us the definitive Groot. Poor tree-guy's been retconned and changed so many damn times in such a short span of time that it's easy to not really know what he's about. And Mr. Gunn took that and ran with it, giving us a more simple, sweet, innocent, and flat-out LOVABLE Groot than I ever expected to see. And the bit during the credits? I want a toy of that. NOW.

And Rocket, well... any grumbling I may have done when first hearing Bradley Cooper's "Rocket voice" is officially apologized for. Dude knocked it out of the PARK. Rocket was, as we all hoped he'd be, the absolute highlight of the movie. Every damn word he said was pure gold, from his wisecracks, to his insults, to his drunken breakdown, to his mourning. I was afraid of how they might portray Rocket, given how much Bendis has changed him in V3... but those fears were completely unfounded. Much like Groot... I think Gunn just gave us the definitive Rocket. The one people will know and love from this point on.

I'm going to slightly paraphrase my description of the first Cap movie here: this was a love letter to all longtime GOTG fans.

My one, solitary complaint (and it's not a big one at all) was that they essentially made Ronan irredeemable, to where even if he DOES somehow return, I can't ever see him being portrayed as the semi-hero he is in the comics now.

And yes, I found Nebula to be wicked hot. 100%, distractingly, I-can-barely-think-because-of-it hot. It's officially impossible for me NOT to find Karen Gillan sexy as hell.

Overall? I don't feel I'm being biased to call this my favorite MCU film yet, and honestly, quite possibly the most fun I've had watching a movie in YEARS. The feeling of joy and excitement this film gave me was the feeling I wish the Star Wars prequels could have given me. It has so much heart, and leaves you thinking of the Guardians not as characters, but as old friends.

REVIEW: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY; Hit Or Miss?

By Garret Watts
Marvel's latest release has made it's way to the big screen, and so I took the liberty and went to see it. But was James Gunn's latest release a hit? Or a miss? After the jump you can check out my spoiler-free review!

Welcome comic nerds, to the latest review from Garret Watts. Today, I'll be taking a look at Marvel's latest release, Guardians of the Galaxy. This is one of those films that seemed like a great risk. But was it good or bad? That's what I'm here to decide.

Unlike many of their other films, Marvel really relied the story solely on the characters of the film. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, as many films such as previous release Captain America: The Winter Soldier was centered around the plot, while in this film the characters MAKE the plot. They are the sole being of the film, and without any one of them, the film wouldn't be the same.

Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie) takes the lead as Peter Jason Quill a.k.a Star-Lord, and pulls off the bounty hunter's role so perfectly, it isn't even funny (actually, he is). He is certainly one of Marvel's greatest leading actors, and one of my personal favorites. WWE Wrestler Dave Bautista's acting skills are impressive, as he had a reason to fight because his wife and daughter were killed. And fight he did! He certainly had some great fighting shots, and while he wasn't the best character out of the team, he certainly came close. Zoe Saldana's (Star Trek) Gamora was even better, and while she didn't have as many jokes to remember, her fighting skills are most amazing and she is certainly a force to be reckoned with. Now I don't know about the rest of you, but I was a bit iffy with Rocket (Bradley Cooper) from the trailers. The voice just didn't fit for me. Well let me say, he is brilliant! The voice really grows on you, and to me the motion-capture is one of the best that this age has seen. “I am Groot!” Vin Diesel's (Fast and Furious) Groot is the final hero, and to me is the best. Star-Lord refers to him as “Giving Tree”, and he is! He is sure to give laughs, and always has something to help the team just when they need him. His voice was iconic, yet rare, much like the roar from Gareth Edward's recent Godzilla

I came in not expecting much from the villain's side of things, especially Lee Pace's 'Ronan the Accuser.' I expected him to be much like Thor: The Dark World's 'Malekith,' with no motives and he's just there to make things bad. While he doesn't have much of a motive either, He certainly is powerful and Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) really pulls off the role. Nebula however, was not so. Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) plays the part, and you don't see much from the trailers, but what you see is kinda what you get. She says a few lines, fights for a little while, and that's all we really get out of her. As we all know by now, Josh Brolin's 'Thanos' makes an appearance in the film, and he is perfect for the role. There is no better actor for the part and while he doesn't do much, you don't expect him to.

The Nova Corps were rather disappointing, as they just seemed to be “there.” They didn't really help do much, and none of them did anything superior, but they weren't bad, and the uniforms were great and I hope to see a future in the corps.

As far as a plot goes, Guardians of the Galaxy is far from original, but the characters and jokes make up (and surpasses) the need for a unique story. James Gunn did a brilliant job of bringing the characters together, as it takes talent to do so in a 2-hour film. The film's graphics of ships, backgrounds, and sets are unique and amazing, and seeing it in RealD 3D just adds to the greatness. The soundtrack (Awesome Mix Vol. 1) is one of the best parts of the film, and Tyler Bates' score is also done well. Check out my final thoughts below!

I'm Hooked on a Feeling, and I'm high on believing, that this is a great movie! With edge-of-your-seat action, several touchy moments, as well as jokes and one-liners to keep you laughing along the way, Guardians of the Galaxy is certainly worth the watch. Is it better than The Avengers? I wouldn't say so personally, but I can certainly understand others thinking so. Hats off to Marvel Studios, you've done it again!

According to Deadline, Guardians of the Galaxy is on its way to making $95 million over the weekend. However, with extremely good word of mouth, the film could definitely make over $100 million, which would prove most of our visitors right (view our weekly poll results on the right side of our site). The film took in $11.2 million on Thursday night showings alone, and made close to $30 million on Friday. Although the second film is already greenlit, these totals promise a long future for our favorite space adventurers. (Hey. The Guardians always wanted to be rich, didn't they?)

What do you think it will end up making over the weekend? Will it beat the opening take of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million)? Drop us a comment below and let us know!

Director James Gunn Writes Thankful Letter To The Everyone Who Made GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY A Success

Director James Gunn recently took to Facebook to thank everyone involved in the making of Guardians of the Galaxy. Check out his note below...
"Thanks to all of you who saw (and are seeing) Guardians of the Galaxy this weekend, from the bottom of my heart. The Guardians are a group of oddballs, outcasts, and geeks. The movie is for anyone who ever felt cast aside, left out, or different. It's for all of us who don't belong. This movie belongs to you. And, today, I think we're doing okay.

I am of course happy with all the film has accomplished box-office-wise. But what touches me the most is that the film I told the folks at Marvel I wanted to make two years ago is the film that you're seeing in theaters today - it's that so many of you seem to be directly EXPERIENCING the film I INTENDED. The cast, the producers, the crew, and I felt like we were making something special while we were making it. But it is very rare that a director's INTENTIONS in creating a film, or a scene, or a character, or a line of dialogue are, seemingly, specifically what is experienced by an audience (not to mention critics!), and that seems to be what has happened here. You have allowed a talking raccoon - for a moment, a minute, or a day - to make you a little more human. And for that, I am profoundly grateful.

If I relied on myself to implement these intentions, the film would be a shambling mess. But instead, I had a wonderful cast, genius producers, an incredibly brave studio, sublimely talented visual effects artists, great editors, and the best damn crew of mostly-British bastards to actually implement these intentions for me. Where I had a good idea they would, through alchemy, transform it into a great one. Many of you involved are friends of mine on Facebook. Many of you will read this somewhere else. I love you all.

You may remember me posting here a couple weeks ago how sad I was to be finishing up the film, that I was having trouble letting go of Rocket, and that I was going to miss him. But seeing him (and Groot, and the rest of the team) embraced by the world like they have been, to be UNDERSTOOD, makes it a wonderful letting go. It's like giving a foster pet up for adoption to the most wonderful parents in the world.

And, of course, I'm not really saying goodbye as, while many of you have been enjoying the film, I've spent this weekend hard at work on the sequel. I couldn't help myself! The results are nice but it's really the creative process I love and that keeps me going. I'm on fire with this thing! The Guardians have so many hardships and heartaches and triumphs ahead of them, and I can't wait to share them with all of you.

Onto week two...

Love, James"

EDITORIAL: Our Top Five Funniest Moments From GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (Spoilers)

By Cameron Logan
Guardians of the Galaxy has many funny moments. There were so many, I could barely narrow it down to a top five. Many people agree that this is Marvel's funniest film, and I'd have to say that's true. Here's five of my favorite funny moments from the film...

1. Peter Quill's Dancing Intro

Although Guardians of the Galaxy begins on a somber note, it doesn't take long for the humor to kick in. Our introduction to Peter Quill as an adult takes place on the abandoned planet of Morag, as Peter is in hot pursuit of the orb. Once he enters the temple where the orb is being housed, he puts on his headphones and presses play on his walkman. Then the intro to 'Come and Get Your Love' by Redbone begins to play. As soon as the lyrics kick in, the title of the film is show in bold letters above Quill dancing. The next two minutes feature Quill dancing and singing along to the classic tune, even using an alien rodent as a microphone stand in.

2. Yondu's Love Of Figurines

Although Yondu seems like a tough guy, he occasionally displays his softer side in the film. Before questioning 'The Broker' about the orb, Yondu fawns over a small animal figurine. 'The Broker' asks whether Yondu is serious, to which Kraglin (Yondu's first mate) replies that he is. The film goes even further to show us Yondu's "collection" of animal figurines on the dashboard of his cockpit.

3. 'Kevin Bacon'

Peter Quill is a womanizer, so of course he tries to seduce Gamora. One way to do this is to let her listen to a romantic song ('Fooled Around and Fell In Love' to be exact). When she questions him about music, he tells her you can dance to it. Gamora states that she is an assassin and doesn't dance. Quill goes on to tell her a story of a great hero named "Kevin Bacon" who taught "a whole town of people with sticks up their butts" the power of dancing. Quill was obviously referring to the 80's dance flick, Footloose, but Gamora didn't know this.

Later in the film, when the Guardians crash 'The Milano' onto 'The Dark Aster', Gamora looks over at Pete, smiles, and earnestly says 'We're Kevin Bacon!'

4. Groot Smiling

Groot is by far the sweetest of the Guardians, but that doesn't stop him from doing some damage. On 'The Dark Aster', Groot, Drax, and Star-lord encounter a large group of Sakaaran soldiers. Groot takes them all down by turning his arm into a skewer and stabbing it through the Sakaarans. He then violently knocks all of the standing Sakaarans soldiers down by using their comrades. The extended sequence is brutal (with Drax giving Star-lord an approving nod), but once he's finished, Groot turns around at Star-lord and Drax with a huge grin on his face.

5. Peter Quill Distracting Ronan

In the climax of the film, the Guardians are finally face to face with Ronan, and it seems that there's no way they can prevail. Ronan begins to give a big speech, which is soon interrupted by something Ronan (or no one in the theater for that matter) expected. Star-lord stands up in front of Ronan and begins dancing and singing along to 'O-O-H Child'. Ronan looks on, insulted by Peter Quill's lack of respect. "What are you doing?" Ronan angrily shouts at Peter. "I'm distracting you, you big turd-blossom."

That's all, folks! What were the funniest moments of the film for you? Drop us a comment below and let us know!

Director James Gunn Confirms That Adam Warlock's Cocoon Is In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

By Cameron Logan
When Thor: The Dark World came out last year, fans were treated to a post-credits scene featuring The Collector, a character that would reappear in Guardians of the Galaxy. In that post credits scene, Lady Sif and Volstagg walk past a glass cage which many people believed to be the cocoon of Adam Warlock. No one from Marvel confirmed that this was in fact the cocoon of Adam Warlock, although it was pretty obvious. Now we have a confirmation.

Guardians director James Gunn was recently a guest on Empire Podcast. While talking about hidden easter eggs in The Collector's lair, Gunn said, "There are the slither creatures from my movie Slither behind The Collector, those guys are pretty obvious. You have Adam Warlock's cocoon, you have all sorts of other characters from Marvel movies."

For those who didn't notice, the cocoon reappeared in Guardians (behind Howard The Duck), but this time it was busted open. This means that Adam Warlock exists in the MCU and could possibly make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. When Gunn was recently asked on Twitter if any other Guardians from the comics would appear in the sequel, he replied, "...can't give it away but there should be at least one more Guardian from the comics."

Thanks to Yahoo Movies for the info! What do you think? Would you like for Adam Warlock to appear in the sequel.Drop a comment below and let us know what you think!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Gaming Update with Leo Wyld (Aug. 2014 Edition)

Cosmic Greetings, everyone! This is Leo Wyld, your Raccoonatic Commander. I almost made this a new issue of Flarkin' Awesome!, but there is more to share here beyond just Rocket Raccoon news. In general, it is a great time to be a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanks to the brilliant cinematic creation of James Gunn and a related marketing push, our favorite cosmic team is everywhere right now. Video games are definitely no exception.
What a bunch of... well, you know.
My favorite game, as many may be aware, is Marvel Heroes, recently re-branded as Marvel Heroes 2015. And Marvel Heroes has made a number of additions recently that directly tie-in to Guardians of the Galaxy. Other games I will look at today are Gazillion's other Marvel-related creation, Super Hero Squad Online; the Facebook game, Marvel: Avengers Alliance; and, lastly, a standalone game focused entirely on Guardians of the Galaxy.

All your Galaxian gaming news can be found after the jump...

Marvel Heroes 2015

In a way, Marvel Heroes has always been affected by the release of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Marvel mysteriously insisted Rocket Raccoon be included on the game, despite most people at Gazillion (the company that made Marvel Heroes) having no idea who he was. Marvel enigmatically claimed “He'll be big”. The reason became somewhat more evident when, very shortly afterward, the Guardians of the Galaxymovie was officially announced, clearly being the prime motivation in Marvel's push to include Rocket on the roster.

Now, of course, we all know who Rocket Raccoon is, and Gazillion's CEO (and creator of Diablo, Diablo II, and Marvel Heroes) David Brevik even now considers himself “a Raccoonatic at heart”. Jeff “Doomsaw” Donais, another one of Gazillion's top people, also considers Rocket among his favorite heroes on the game. But one of the great things about the Guardians of the Galaxy is that they are a team of misfits who make each other stronger. For most of the game's launch, however, poor Rocket was stranded on Earth, fighting street crime with no one but his buddy Groot to help (unless you want to count Tony and Carol as Guardians, that is). This has changed.

Peter Jason Quill, you might know him better as the Star-Lord, is now playable.
WHO?!
Legendary outlaw, leader of the Guardians of the Gal... Never mind, you're clearly never gonna get it, Korath. Anyway, I played him some on Test Center (sorry, Quill, not budging off Rocket on Live until I get to Cosmic 60). I must say, I was quite impressed. His powers revolve around using his ship, his iconic 'Element Gun,' as well as his overall skills as a legendary outlaw. Admittedly, I did not try any higher level powers, but, what little I played, he seemed to have a rather unique style and, most importantly, I found him quite fun to play. He has two costumes, currently.

Personally, I find it an odd choice to add a character because he is leader of the Guardians and choose, as his default, a costume that he wore before the modern Guardians of the Galaxy were technically formed. I cannot deny, though, it does look exactly like what he wore in Annihilation: Conquest. His alternate costume is, of course, his movie costume and, given how his recent appearance in comics is emulating the movie, it really somewhat passes as a current comic costume, as well. The big question for us long-time Galaxians would be, where the flark is his Guardians 'volume 2' blue and red costume? Since Rocket Raccoon's default (Modern) costume on Marvel Heroes is from 'volume 2' of the comics, it would seem a natural choice to make his leader's default costume match. I do have good news on that front, I posed the same question to David Brevik and he said the v2 blue/red Star-Lord costume is in development, and it sounds like it may not too far from release.

Now, they couldn't get Chris Pratt to voice Quill (obviously) and the voice actor they got does not really attempt to imitate Pratt, but I think he does capture Pete's personality very well, which is helped from some spot on lines of dialog. I think any fan of Star-Lord will be very happy with how he is presented in this game.
In addition to Peter Quill, there are two other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy who were unrepresented in the game, until now, that is. You may recall, in my last gaming update I told you about the new team-up feature. To complement the film's release both Drax and Gamora were released as team-up characters.

Gamora's appearance is based on her recent "Mass-Effect-ish" armor, and Drax's look is... well, Drax's outfit hasn't changed much since the modern Guardians formed. As with other team-ups, they have a couple different powers and their own lines of dialogue to interact with enemies, the environment, and other heroes. I prefer Drax's voice-acting slightly over Gamora's. Gamora doesn't sound bad, just maybe not exactly what I would have expected, whereas Drax sounds exactly like I think Drax should sound.

They could have left it at those two and the entire core modern team would be represented, Groot being a 'summon' for Rocket Raccoon. It was decided, though, Groot would no longer be available just as a Rocket summon. That's right, they also released Groot as a team-up. Rocket can use him, too, and Groot's appearance will change from v2 to movie Groot depending on whether Rocket is wearing the movie costume or not.

Because of disliking anti-duplicates between playable/summons and team-ups, you will not be allowed to us the Groot summon as Rocket if you are using the Groot team-up and vice-versa. There are a couple advantages to using the team-up instead of the summon if you are Rocket, but the summon is more powerful, so, if you are Rocket, it is probably best to keep Groot as a summon and use one of the other team-ups (if you are playing movie Rocket, Drax fits better for me, since Gamora is so clearly, visually comic Gamora and Drax, Rocket, and Groot do have a couple good scenes in the movie, anyway). On the subject of team-ups, not really Guardians related 'per se' but in the ballpark, Beta Ray Bill is available as a cool cosmic-tinged team-up, as well.
Ain't no costume like this, 'cept this.

I mentioned movie Rocket and, yes, Rocket (Raccoon, we must put that in parentheses since it is not part of his MCU name) does have an awesome enhanced movie costume. The look is amazing and is not scaled as large as his other costumes, he looks decent without any shrinks, which actually caused me to decide to drop shrink visuals on Rocket, altogether. The Groot you summon while playing movie Rocket will look like movie Groot.

And the voice. Another obvious, they could not get Bradley Cooper to voice movie Rocket, but they got iconic voice actor Nolan North. That is where there is a rub, for some people. You see, Nolan North has also, lately, become the definitive voice actor for Deadpool and everyone was convinced, before even hearing movie Rocket, that he would sound like Deadpool, which is exactly what many claimed after the costume released. For what my opinion's worth, I do not agree. I think Mr. North did an admirable imitation of Bradley's Rocket and there is a certain “accent” to movie Rocket's voice that is just different than Deadpool's despite, admittedly, sharing a similar tonal quality.

Speaking of "Movie Rocket's" voice, he has completely different lines. Whereas the Cockney-hued dialogue of his other costumes is rather indicative in personality of DnA-era Rocket, the lines of his movie costume are more in line with his much meaner MCU persona, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. He has some very entertaining lines, and I've set up a separate Quotes page for his movie costume.  Rocket received far more than just a movie costume, though.  All heroes have been going through a process called level 52 reviews.  The hero's Ultimate power is moved to level 52, they receive a new type of power called a Signature Power at the old Ultimate Power level of 30, and the hero's entire powerset is overhauled with reworks, renamed, removals, and additions. Rocket's review, in terms of resources spent, was the most expensive to complete. And I've put a brief rundown of how those powers look in the MH section of my own site.

Aside from those things, some other upcoming cosmic possibilities. Well, for one, Nova. Once planned as a shortly-after-launch hero, the situation quickly became tangled when long-time Nova fans learned that Sam Alexander, and not Richard Rider, would be the representative Nova of choice. Attempts to settle what had to be done with Sam and what could be done with Rider became tied up in various legal, and creative complications that I will not even attempt to speculate.  Lonnng story short, the issues have finally been resolved.  Nova will be released in September.  The default costume will be Sam Alexander Nova, the first alternate costume that launches with him will also be a Sam Alexander costume, however, some time after the hero's launch, presumably shortly after, an enhanced Richard Rider Nova costume *will* be released.

The game also had various sales leading up to the movie release (which I apologize for not reporting on, but I was at SDCC for part of that period and busy with other matters for the remainder). There was also an ability to collect Planet X tree bark to turn in for various items at Jocasta, the Events Vendor.  Coming up, it's been hinted the next major story arc will somehow involved the Skrulls.  Sounds like it could be cosmic... Onto some other games...

Super Hero Squad Online

Not much to report on Gazillion's web-based kid-centric game... for now. I believe I once mentioned there was a hint at Rocket's addition to the game.  We now have a bit more Guardians news than that.  The Guardians have been officially confirmed as being upcoming hero additions, but there was some sort of schedule delay. They will not start showing up until later this month, with Groot being the first.

Marvel: Avengers Alliance

Another afternoon game of mine.  I started playing Playdom's Marvel-themed Facebook game when I saw the news, on this site and other places, about the Guardians of the Galaxy team being planned additions. As mentioned in my last gaming update, Rocket Raccoon was the first team member to show up, as a PvP reward.  After a painfully long wait, he finally became available for those who are not master PvP players.  Gamora is available as a 90 CP general recruitment hero, as is Groot. Drax was another PvP reward, which means he will be available for recruitment to non-PvP winners at some point in the future. And, the leader, Star-Lord, is the reward for completing the current ongoing SpecOps, which kinda meshes the comic world with the movie world in an interesting albeit sometimes awkward, combination (for instance, the, clearly, MCU version of Nebula, who is Thanos' adoptive daughter in the movie, is referred to, per the comics, as Thanos' granddaughter. You have the baddies from Infinity present and Thanos trapped in amber, but the Guardians being outlaws on the run from Nova Corps and MCU purely-villanous Ronan).

Speaking of MCU vs. comics, whereas every other Guardian released prior had blue/red DnA comic costumes and bios that reflected their comic origins, Peter Quill's default costume is his movie one and, so, his bio is specifically his movie bio, instead. Star-Lord's blue/red costume will be unlockable through CovertOps, while the other Guardians will unlock their *movie* costumes as alternate costumes in the same way.  The SpecOps is entertaining, though, and it has some amusing dialogue, so I do recommend checking it out before it ends.

Other Games

Oddly enough, very much so, the storyline of the current SpecOps from Marvel: Avengers Alliance (and it tells you this specifically) continues in the standalone mobile game Guardians of the Galaxy: The Ultimate Weapon (also available as a Windows 8.1 app, for those of you, like me, who want a fun game to play when your laptop is offline. Really helped on the flight home from San Diego).

Don't worry, you do not have to play M:AA to understand what is going on in the game, it does not tie together *that* much.  It is a drag-to-attack game, that has some frantic real-time strategy.  There are also some RPG elements to the game, unlockable characters, and a fun little story, told in stylized comic-style panels. The mobile version is 5 dollars, the Windows app version is 8, and there are no microtransaction needed. I definitely recommend it.

In addition to TUW, Zen Pinball 2, on mobile and Xbox Live Arcade, just released a cool Guardians of the Galaxy themed "table".  I tried a demo version on XBLA and it was quite fun, definitely plan to get the full version in the near future. Speaking of XBLA, the Xbox Avatar Store added a Guardians section with a Star-Lord costume, Ronan costume, Drax costume, I think. As well as some "shirts" and accesories (But no Rocket costume, tsk, tsk, Marvel.)

In closing, yes, the Guardians of the Galaxy are officially *everywhere* right now. And if you had told anyone that would happen a couple years ago, they'd have thought you were crazy.  It really is an unbelievable time we Galaxians are having right now. And, until next time... keep playing those games and I will see you 'round the Raccooniverse.

It's official. Guardians of the Galaxy is a hit, and has spawned a whole new franchise for Marvel/Disney. The toys are flying off the shelves, and Rocket and Groot are widely adored by families everywhere. With this newfound popularity, can we expect to see more Guardians of the Galaxy merchandise making its way to stores? Well, duh!

Paul Gitter, Disney Consumer Products' Senior Vice President of Licensing, recently talked to TheWrap about Guardians of the Galaxy's success, specifically about one Sir Rocket Raccoon.

"You can never fully predict a breakout character," said Gitter."But we knew he was funny and that kids especially would respond to him, since, like many kids, he is underestimated because of his size...Rocket is unlike anything we have in Marvel merchandise, and licensees have risen to the expected demand with a range of Rocket-inspired products."

It sounds like Disney is pretty happy with the popularity of Rocket Raccoon. With Avengers merchandise found in almost every store imaginable, should we soon expect to see loads of Guardians merchandise appear as often?  Gitter added, “Due to the response and demand, we are working closely with licensees on additional product assortments for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,' led by Rocket-inspired offerings."

Most of us Galaxians believed that Rocket would be the breakout star of the franchise, and that seems to be the case. What Guardians merchandise would you like to see appear in the future? Drop a comment below and let us know!
