SEQUEL SPECULATION: The Future Of The Nova Corps In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 (Editorial)

By Cameron Logan
A lot was said about the Nova Corps in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. Many were concerned that the Nova Corps were basically "beat cops," and didn't have the superpowers that they have in the comics. However, the ending of the first film may have set the Nova Corps up for a more "powerful" role in the sequel. Hit the jump for my theories...

In the comics, the Nova Force is a "near-limitless energy source" which is "transmitted" into each recruit "at varying levels depending on their rank." Basically, as a member of the Nova Corps goes up in rank, they are able to harness a larger percentage of the Nova Force, giving them more abilities. The Nova Force can give a recruit the ability to fly, as well as enhance their speed, strength, and stamina.

Very similar to the Nova Force is the Power Gem (which Ronan harnessed in GOTG). According to Marvel Wiki, the Power Gem's most basic powers "grant its user unlimited stamina and can increase the user's strength to unlimited levels depending on how much the gem is drawn upon. It allows the user to duplicate practically any physical superhuman ability and become invincible. It can also be used as an unlimited power supply for any machine." Sounds familiar right? The Nova Force and the Power Gem do almost the exact same thing! Which brings me to my next point...

At the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, the Guardians have left the Power Gem with the Nova Corps. Quill even says that the Nova Corps are the only ones who can keep it safe. However, after losing so many of their top "soldiers" during their battle with Ronan, it is understandable that the Nova Corps would use the Power Gem to enhance the abilities of their remaining recruits.

My theory is that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will introduce the Nova Force as a power harnessed from the Power Gem. Members of the Nova Corps will have superhuman abilities, such as flight and enhanced strength. Richard Rider will be introduced as one of these Corpsmen, who is abruptly left to take over as Nova Prime when Xandar is destroyed (Nebula once destroyed Xandar in the comics). He will be the last living member of the Nova Corps, and the sole protector of the Power Gem.

What do you think? Will the Nova Corps use the Power Gem? Will Richard Rider appear in GOTG2? Sound off in the comment section below and let us know what you think!

Funko's Guardians of the GalaxyPOP! bobbleheads have sold like hot-cakes, so naturally, they are releasing more bobbleheads inspired by the film. Although he only had a small cameo in the film, Howard The Duck is getting his own bobblehead, as well as 'Dancing Groot' (this should hold some people over until an actual 'Dancing Groot' toy is made). James Gunn Reveals Stan Lee's Original Cameo In GOTG; Talks Ms. Marvel Joining The Team

Stan Lee made an appearance in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and while his appearance was short and not that funny, fans still enjoyed seeing the legend on screen again. In a recent interview with Collider, director James Gunn revealed Stan The Man's original cameo, which you can read below.

In the original version, Stan was meant to be part of 'The Collector's' collection along with Howard the Duck, Cosmo, a Chitauri soldier, and much more. The scene would have featured Vin Diesel's Groot browsing the specimens, where he would come across Lee, who would give an unloving finger to the talking tree.

Talks also (unsurprisingly) went to Carol Danvers, who is known as Ms./Captain Marvel in the comic books. Gunn stated that while she'll likely appear in the Marvel Universe sooner than later, he believes that there are plenty of other female roles to place into the team, and that he is very eager on bringing them to the Guardians universe ASAP.

"Guardians of the Galaxy will be the next John Carter flop."
"It's just too weird for general audiences."
"What is Marvel thinking?"

These were the sentiments that Galaxians everywhere had to endure while waiting for the Guardians of the Galaxy film. Now that our movie has been out for over a month, let's just say that things have changed drastically. Not only is Guardians currently #1 at the box office, with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's also the TOP GROSSING MOVIE OF 2014!!! Domestically, Guardians has made over $274 million, while raking in over $547 million worldwide!

All we have to say to the doubters is..."Oh yeaaaah!"

Guardians of the Galaxy, whether it be the comic book or the movie, touches each and every one of us in some profound way - we wouldn't be on a fansite and wouldn't be calling ourselves Galaxians otherwise. But the little brother of 'merryweatherblue' on Tumblr found a special connection with Drax. Here's the Original Tumblr Post - This movie has exceeded so many expectations all the way around, but for it to reach someone so deeply and inspire like this, goes well above and beyond anything you could reasonably expect from a film. I am proud to have supported and pushed for this movie so fervently for the last year or more. Warms the cockles of me heart, it does.
Drop a comment and tell us how the Guardians have inspired you in any way, great or small!

BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Passes MAN OF STEEL And Not Stopping Yet

Everyone considered James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy to be Marvel's first big risk, and likely flop. Well whoever said that was wrong, as the team just hit $294.6 million domestically, which passes up Zack Snyder's take on the blue boy scout Man of Steel (which made $291 million). Guardians also hit $586.2 million globally, which beats out Marvel's first film Iron Man, which made a global score of $585 million. So the thief, two thugs, the assassin and the maniac have got some big scores lately, and it doesn't look like they'll be stopping yet. So in the words of Rocket...

Anyway, I was recently contacted by Taryn Watt (PR Manager for 'Living Dead Clothing') about their new line of Guardians of the Galaxy clothing for women. They seem really excited about their collection, so I figured I'd post their press release on here:

Marvel has released the first of five Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Shorts; this one featuring Star-Lord's origin. Although not part of the Marvel Cinematic Unvierse's continuity, the short film begins as kid Peter Quill is abducted by Yondu. The animation is so much better than what we've come to expect from Disney's other Marvel shows. The voice talent is great as well, including Boy Meets World's Will Friedle as Peter Quill (Star-Lord). Check out the videos below, and let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Every Saturday night in August, there will be a new short featuring a different Guardian's origin, leading up to the first full episode on Saturday, September 5th at 9:00 pm ET. So exciting!

JAMES GUNN SAYS: Groot Vs. Hulk, Guardians in Civil War, Sean Gunn, Seth Green,

As many of you may already know, Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, is extremely active on social media. He takes the time out of his undoubtedly busy day to answer fan questions, often with an unmatchable wit. He is truly a fanboy's dream director, giving small tidbits (nothing too spoiler-y though) about the upcoming sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Since many people aren't on Facebook, or don't follow Mr. Gunn, we decided to start a new series, called James Gunn Says. Make sure to follow Mr. Gunn on Facebook, if you aren't already. Read the rest after the jump!

1. JAMES GUNN'S CAT
Stephanie Hall asked, "Will Emily Monster (James Gunn's cat) have a cameo in Guardians 2? (Von Spears got a turn) Can you imagine if Groot got a cat?"

James Gunn replied, "No she won't. Von Spears loves being on movie sets and acting in movies. Emily would hate it. I would never want to put her through that."

Gunn's dog, Von Spears in GotG

2. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
Aaron Nyetera James asked, "Will you help direct Avengers: Infinity War?"

James Gunn replied, "Nope, that's my pals the Russo Brothers' province."

3. HULK VS. GROOT
Nipples The Enchilada asked Mr. Gunn, "Is there going to be a Hulk VS Groot fight scene anytime in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?"

James Gunn replied, "Definitely not in the near future."

"No Groot fight scene make Hulk sad."

4. SETH GREEN
DJ Sanne said, "Please put Seth Green in the sequel! Also, if he's the Ravager's pilot and wears a sort of ballcap, I'll likely go into a nerd coma!"

James Gunn replied, "Yep, he's already in."

5. SEAN GUNN (KRAGLIN)
Aaron Owens said, "I think there definitely needs to be more of your brother in the next film. He played a small but golden role in GotG."

James Gunn simply replied, "Worry not."

6. GUARDIANS IN CIVIL WAR
Cole Markley, "Are any GOTG characters going to be in Captain America: Civil War?

James Gunn replied, "You'll have to wait and see. Also, no."

To recap, James Gunn's cat will NOT be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Seth Green (Howard the Duck) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin), on the other hand, will be. Also, James Gunn will NOT be helping out with Avengers: Infinity War. Don't expect to see the Hulk and Groot to go at it anytime soon, since the Guardians will NOT be appearing in Captain America: Civil War.
