EXCLUSIVE: Legendary GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Writer Andy Lanning Talks GOTG Comics, Movie, And More

Back in 2008, Andy Lanning (along with his writing partner Dan Abnett) began working on the Marvel comic series, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. The two writers brought together many cosmic characters, such as Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Starlord, Gamora, and Drax (and many more), to form the "new" Guardians that we all know and love. We had the pleasure of talking to Mr. Lanning about his work in comics, as well as the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film.Check out the interview below!

Guard The Galaxy:"Tell us a bit about how you started writing comics and how you broke into the industry."

Andy Lanning:"I actually had my first published work while I was in my last year of college. Thanks to Phil Gascoine, who I met at the Society of Strip illustrator, I drew Boy George’s life story for UK TV tie-in comic, Look-In. From there I ended up working in house as a graphic Designer (my course at college was graphic design and illustration) and drew strips in the evening; anything from Danger Mouse to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures. In 1988, I started working for Marvel UK on the Real Ghostbusters comic, this is where I met my future writing partner, Dan Abnett, who was an assistant editor at the time. I wrote and drew a lot of Ghostbusters stuff which led to me and my good friend and co-writer, John Carnell creating The Sleeze Brothers comic which, through a series of fortuitous events, was published as an Epic Comic thanks to Richard Starkings and Archie Goodwin. Because the Sleeze Brothers was published by Marvel US, John and I took a trip to the New York offices and I managed to pitch a Punisher idea Dan and I had come up with in the pub after work to then Punisher editor, Don Daley. I’m pretty sure things don’t happen like this these days, but Don took his phone off the hook, closed his door and let me pitch the idea. Luckily, he loved it and , a couple of hours later, I emerged, grinning like a loon with an eight-issue Punisher series under my belt. The series, called Eurohit, ran as the Summer bi-monthly event and was drawn by Dougie Braitwaite. Dougie, Dan and I went on to work on the Punisher for the next 3 years. I guess that was the start of our US comics careers."

GTG:"How did you get the job of writing Annihilation: Nova?"

AL:"That came about due to the generosity of Andy Schmidt. Andy was an assistant editor at Marvel and was a huge fan of Marvel’s cosmic heroes. At that time, around 2006-ish, Andy wanted to pitch a revival of the Nova series as the character hadn’t been in print since New Warriors Volume 3, which ended in 2005 . He approach Dan and me because he liked what we had done on Legion over at DC and we worked up an idea with awesome artist, Chris Batista. This idea pitched the Nova Corps as a far more militaristic outfit and Chris produced some fantastic redesigns of all the Nova ranks and insignias. Unfortunately, this series didn’t get the green light but Andy remembered us when it came to producing a Nova mini-series that tied-in to the cosmic event series Keith Giffen was writing, called 'Annihilation.' Keith was generous and gracious enough to let Dan and I do whatever we wanted with the mini-series as long as it started a point ‘A’ and ended with Nova at point ‘B’, how we got him there and what happened along the way was up to us. Thanks to Keith’s amazing story, Annihilation proved very popular and people seemed to like Nova so Dan and I were tapped to write a new ongoing series. This led directly into Annihilation: Conquest, which Dan and I were privileged to orchestrate, and from that event, the Guardians of the Galaxy series was launched."

GTG:"One of the most beloved characters from Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy is Cosmo. Where did the inspiration for the character come from? "

AL:"The inspiration for Cosmo is the Soviet Space dog, Laika, who was one of the first animals in space. I remember Nick Abadzis doing a great graphic novel called Laika around the same time and the image of a dog in a spacesuit is iconic. We decided on making Cosmo a Labrador/retriever, not sure why but I did used to have a honey brown Lab when I was a kid. It was just too irresistible once we decided he was a powerful telepath, not to give him a Russian accent. To me he always sounds like Chekhov in Star Trek: ‘Vere are de Nooclear wessels?’"

GTG:"What influences did you draw on when writing the Guardians? Any favorite Sci-Fi films/books you kept on mind to maintain the tone of the story?"

AL:"Both Dan and I are huge sci-fi fans, between us, we’ve watched and read a wide variety of stuff. Though there’s nothing specific that jumps out to me, we channeled an eclectic mix of things: Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica , Firefly, Alien, The Matrix, the books of Arthur C. Clark, Asimov, Larry Niven, Joe Haldeman, Dan Simmons, John Scalzi, Richard K. Morgan, Alistair Reynolds, Charles Stross. There’s something from all of these in what we were writing, plus a huge dose of Starlin, Giffen, Milgrom, and Simonson as favorite cosmic comic writers."

GTG:"Were there any cosmic characters that you, specifically, pushed to be included in the Guardians?"

AL:"We were really lucky to be able to ‘play with’ virtually all the characters we wanted to. Mainly because no one was doing very much with the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. My own favorites are Drax, Starlord and Rocket Raccoon. Keith Giffen put the core of the Guardians team together in his Starlord mini-series as part of Annihilation: Conquest so when we got to do the regular book and round out the team, being able to add in Warlock was awesome. I consider Jim Starlin the godfather of Marvel’s cosmic universe, so to be able to write Warlock, then resurrect Thanos, who is probably my favorite Marvel villain of all time, was a true privilege.

GTG: What is your favorite Rocket Raccoon moment from Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2?

AL: Issue 1: Rocket and Cosmo stare daggers at each other and are frigidly polite, you know they barely tolerate each other, they just can’t help it- one’s a dog and one’s a raccoon. I’ve always wanted to have a scene where Cosmo stares at Groot longingly and Groot glowers back at him- 'don’t you dare!'"

GTG:"Are you currently reading Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3? What other comics do you read?"

AL:"I’m enjoying Bendis’ run, but then I’m a fan of what he does and love Steve McNiven and Sarah Pichelli’s artwork. Other comics I read when I get time are The Walking Dead, Manhattan Projects, Saga and I really enjoyed the Superior Spider-Man and The Adventures of Superman."

GTG:"How did you find out about the Guardians of the Galaxy movie? Was your reaction similar to ours - shock and surprise?"

AL:"Oh yes, and disbelief at first! The first hint of something was when we had to sign character equity documents that related to all the new characters we created in Nova and the Guardians which, along with rumors at the time, got our "Spidey Senses" tingling. When it was confirmed I was stunned, quickly followed by ecstatic! It’s a once in a lifetime thing to get a movie made based on your work, so I consider myself a very, very lucky chap."

GTG:"Following the expected success of the Guardians film, what would you like to see for the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe, be it movies, television, or comics?"

AL:"I’ve always loved the Marvel cosmic heroes and I am just happy that people are enjoying cosmic stories again. There was a time in the late 90's and early 2000, that it looked like cosmic heroes were forgotten, now they are vibrant and exciting again. Things can only go from strength to strength after the Guardians movie comes out and there’s a whole universe out there of worlds and characters to explore. It’s a very exciting time for the Marvel cosmic universe and I can’t wait to see what comes next."

GTG:"What was it like returning to write the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Movie Prelude comic, and Guardians of the Galaxy #14? Can you give us any info on your work in those comics?"

AL:"Dan and I were very lucky to visit the set of the Guardians movie and director James Gunn was incredibly generous to show us every aspect of the process. When he asked if we’d like to write the Prelude issues, we jumped at the chance. Any opportunity to revisit the characters we know and love so well, even their movie counter-parts, is a pure joy. We got to explore the movie continuity and tell some extra backstory about Gamora, Nebula and what Rocket and Groot were up to before the film kicks off. Guardians of the Galaxy #14 (or #100 depending on how you are counting) gave me the chance to write a Groot story that my great mate, Phil Jimenez, has drawn. It’s a story from Groot’s past and takes place on Planet X when Groot was a young sapling and goes some way to explain why Groot left and is such friends with Rocket. It’s fun and bittersweet and Phil along with inker, John Livesy, and colorist, Antonio Fabela, have made it look absolutely gorgeous."

GTG:"Tell us a little bit about Marvel UK and the upcoming resurgence of those characters."

AL:"The Revolutionary War series was a great opportunity for me and co-writer, Alan Cowsill, to revisit the Marvel UK part of the Marvel Universe. We got to showcase some of the cool characters created over twenty years ago to a new audience and hopefully got people excited about this very British bit of Marvel. Marvel UK has a long a rich continuity; characters like Captain Britain and Death’s Head are still very popular and we are hopeful that following Revolutionary War, we can come back to the MUKU and tell a few more stories. Writing the mini-series just whetted our appetite to do more, and showed us how cool these UK heros were and are."

A big THANK YOU goes to Andy Lanning for agreeing to do the interview. He's one of our favorite writers, and additionally, a super-nice guy! Make sure to check out his extensive catalog of work, as well as his recent Revolutionary War mini-series. Also, remember to pick up Guardians of the Galaxy #14, in comic stores tomorrow, (Wednesday, April 21st)!

News from Marvel's C2E2 'Next Big Thing' Panel

C2E2, Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, is an exciting place. Arguably one of the biggest Expos for the area. But we Galaxians got a little extra excitement from the last panel from Marvel Comics, 'Next Big Thing'. The panel talked about Marvel's 'Women of Marvel' run of new female-led series, introduced Marvel's "Young Guns" and discussed numerous comics. You can read the about the entire panel over at CBR.

But the really exciting news for Galaxians came in the form of some upcoming news teases, and some awesome cover art. Check it out.

"Scottie Young spoke about his Rocket Raccoon series where the fan favorite character is accused of murders he didn't commit. "Rocket knows he's murdered people, but he hates being accused of murdering people he didn't kill," said the artist. The book will be a "big, intergalactic space romp" with the "bromantic" relationship between the character and Groot being explored as villain Macho Gomez gets into the mix."

"The panel revealed the new lineup of "Young Guns" being promoted by the publisher including Sara Pichelli on "Guardians of the Galaxy,"

"The panel spoke aboutNick Bradshaw's (of "Wolverine & The X-Men,") incoming run on "Guardians of the Galaxy" starting with issue #16 which breaks the team out of their traditional structure."

The 100th anniversary special for "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be by Andy Lanning and Ron Marz with art by Gustao Duarte under a cover by David Lopez. That one-shot will feature Silver Galactus and the return of original Guardians member Charlie 27. The book will ship in July.

"The Legendary Star-Lord" #1 cover by Steve McNiven

"The panel announced July's new "Legendary Star-Lord" series by Sam Humphries and PacoMedina. "Sam has got a great story planned for it. It's epic. It's like a Western in outer space with humor and hi-jinx and the fate of the entire galaxy resting in his hands,"Executive Editor Mike Marts said about the book. The cover to issue #1 will be by Steve McNiven with variants for the issue by the new Young Guns."

"Young Guns" is a promotional initiative from Marvel Comics spotlighting rising artists. All six new Young Guns are individually illustrating a variant cover to July's "The Legendary Star-Lord" #1, and will appear June 14-15 at ReedPOP's new New York City convention, Special Edition: NYC.

"The Legendary Star-Lord" #1 variant cover by Ryan Stegman.

"The Legendary Star-Lord" #1 variant cover by David Marquez

"The Legendary Star-Lord" #1 variant cover byMahmud Asrar

"The Legendary Star-Lord" #1 variant cover by Valerio Schiti

Those covers are amazing. Gorgeous artwork.  The 100th anniversary special is intriguing! Silver Galactus? Is that Gamora in Star-Lord's MCU uniform? What armor is IronMan wearing? Charlie 27 and Major Victory? Drax and Rocket in old uniforms? Wasn't Macho Gomez the villain from Despicable Me 2? (Kidding!)

Which cover is your favorite? I've only found 5 of the Star-Lord covers, but if I can get a definite list of all 7 (6 Young Guns and McNiven), we'll post them all here.

Greetings Galaxians! Sorry for the long pause since our last update! Even the life of fan bloggers gets hectic (believe it or not). There has been a couple pieces of Guardians of the Galaxy comic news items since our last post, including a new solo comic for one of our characters...

  • Marvel has announced a solo Star-lord comic, beginning in July of this year. The title is Legendary Star-Lord and it is being written by Sam Humphries with art by Paco Medina. The writer had this to say about the series: "The book is going to be Peter's adventures away from the Guardians. ... I like to call him the original outer-space scoundrel -- he actually pre-dates Han Solo. He likes to fight, he likes to flirt, he flies by the seat of his pants."Check out the cover art for the first issue (by Steve McNiver) on the right!
  • Marvel has also released cover art for Guardians of the Galaxy #18by Ed McGuinness, as well as an awesome variant cover by Alex Ross. This issue will be an Original Sin tie-in issue, which will finally answer a question that has long been on fan's minds: 'What happened to Richard Rider, Thanos, and Starlord in the Cancerverse?'
Check out the covers after the jump!

EDITORIAL: Ultimate Comics Buying Guide for the Frugal Galaxian (Part One) By Chris S.

The following editorial was submitted by Chris S.
Greetings my fellow Galaxians, my name is Chris and I am a HUGE Guardians of the Galaxy fan. The 2013 series is the reason that I returned to the comic world after a long 10-year hiatus. Researching these characters led me to the much beloved 2008 DnA series. After reading the DnA run, I became hooked and the Guardians quickly became my favorite rag-tag group of cosmic-faring characters to ever hit a panel. As with many fans, I am also a collector, and this has driven me to hunt down all the Guardians related comics I can find. Upon stumbling across this awesome site (my current homepage no less), I wanted to make my own contribution. This article is a result of the hunting I have been doing for my collection, and I am excited to share it with all of you. So I proudly present 'The Ultimate Comic Buying Guide for the Frugal Galaxian' Part 1.

We all know those high dollar books such as Iron Man 55, Marvel Premiere 4, Marvel Preview 7, Hulk 271, etc., but there are many other key Guardians books that can still be found for cheap. These are some great investments to grab before the movie comes out, as I believe quite a few of these still have the potential to increase in value. This first part will cover the five members of the movie incarnation, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Drax, and Gamora. All the prices listed are based on eBay averages so keep in mind it varies. These issues are just now reaching the spotlight with the announcement of the movie, so many comic shops may still have them for cheap.

    1. Marvel Spotlight 6
Starting things off with the front-man himself, Star-Lord. This issue is actually the first appearance of Peter Quill in comic format, all prior appearances were in magazine format. This is a retelling of Star-Lord’s origin and reveals the Master of the Sun’s secret as well as his intentions for Star-Lord. With Chris Pratt finally getting his chance in a leading role on the big screen, Peter Quill just might become a household name right up there with Tony Stark. This issue is reprinted in the Star-Lord Tears for Heaven trade, but you can find this in VF/NM condition for less than $20. It is on the rise though so be quick!

Other Star-Lord issues to look out for:
    • Marvel Spotlight 7
    • Annihilation Conquest Star-Lord 1-4
    • Thanos 8-12

      2. Annihilators 3 (Variant Edition)
James Gunn has stated many times that Rocket is the heart of the movie. Rocket will be a marketing monster, and a major factor in the success of the film. Annihilators is a 4 issue mini-series that put Beta Ray Bill, Silver Surfer, Ronan the Accuser, and Gladiator together to take on cosmic enemies. Not only is this an awesome team and series, but it also features a back-up story of Rocket Raccoon and Groot at the end of each issue. Annihilators 3 is key in the fact that it provides Rocket’s origin story. Each Annihilators issue also has a variant edition that features Rocket Raccoon and Groot on the cover. For those that want the variant cover, now is the time to grab one. In the last month, prices have seen highs in the $60 range, but have been dropping recently. You can now find a copy for $20 or less in NM condition, but it is likely to increase as we get closer to the release of the movie. The standard cover has seen no changes in price and can be had for cover price.

Other Rocket Raccoon issues to look out for:
      • Annihilators 1, 2, and 4 (Rocket Raccoon and Groot cover variants)
      • Rocket Raccoon 1-4
      • The Sensational She-Hulk 44-46
      • Exiles 73
      • Incredible Hulk 272
      • Quasar 15

        3. Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos 1-6
This was actually quite a surprise for me when I found out that Groot was featured in this series. Starting in issue 2, Groot was tracked down and recruited by the Howling Commandos, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s supernatural division. Reluctant to join at first, he eventually aided them in their fight against Merlin. This series features many monsters, creatures, and anything else you would expect in a supernatural series. These issues can be found for next to nothing on eBay with a full set costing less than $15. I believe this series has a potential to increase in value once more people discover Groot is in it, but more than likely not. Still a great story for those interested in Groot.

Other Groot issues to look out for:
        • Sensational Spider-Man 1 (Featured as a monster in Peter Parker’s nightmare)
        • Annihilation Conquest Star-Lord 1-4
        • Incredible Hulk Annual 5
        4. Captain Marvel 32
We are still uncertain what the origin of Drax will be in the movie, but if you want to find out what his origin in the comics was, this is the issue to get. It provides a back story for both Arthur Douglas and Heather Douglas, otherwise known as Drax and Moondragon. You have to find the right seller to find this at a good price, but you can (and should) pick this up in VF to NM condition for less than $20.

Other Drax issues to look out for:
        • Avengers 220 (Killed by Moondragon)
        • Silver Surfer 35 (Vol. 3)(Resurrection)
        • Drax the Destroyer
        • Infinity Gauntlet 1-6
        • The Thanos Imperative 3 (Killed by Thanos)
        5. Warlock 10
This one is another origin story; however, it is sort of like killing two badoon with one stone (see what I did there?). This issue provides the origin for the most dangerous woman in the galaxy, Gamora, as well as the mad titan himself, Thanos. This issue really hasn’t taken off at all, and there is no reason that it shouldn’t have. You get the origin of two key cosmic characters, with one making her movie debut this summer, and the other, the villain pulling all the strings from the shadows of the MCU. If I ranked this list in terms of most potential to jump in value, this would be number one. You can find high grade copies for less than $20, and you can find CGC graded copies in the 9.0-9.4 range for less than $100..

        Runner up: Nova 6
If I have seen anything when it comes to collectors and their comics, it is that anything with a scantily-clad or seductively posed woman on the cover, sells. For Gamora, that would be this issue. Not sure what the market will be for this in the future. Perhaps, this is just a wild speculation based on the Amazing Spider-man J. Scott Campbell effect. ;)
Other Gamora issues to look out for:
        • Strange Tales 180-181
        • Warlock and the Infinity Watch
In part 2, I will list comics featuring the villains and supporting characters of the upcoming movies. Hopefully, this article will help you hunt down some lesser known key Guardians issues. Did I miss an issue? Enjoy the article? Let me know in the comments below! And a big thanks to the great people that run this site for letting me contribute!

        PETER QUILL (Chris Pratt)
Peter Quill is an interstellar adventurer who was abducted from Earth at a young age. After recovering an ancient artifact, Quill must rally an unlikely team of cosmic misfits to prevent a powerful villain from destroying the galaxy.

        GAMORA (Zoe Saldana)
Gamora is an orphan from an alien world who was raised by the mysterious Thanos to become the perfect weapon. As Thanos’ personal assassin, Gamora has earned a reputation as a formidable warrior. Gamora now seeks redemption for her past crimes.

        DRAX (Dave Bautista)
A physical brute, Drax has a personal vendetta against Ronan, who killed his family. Now fueled by pure rage, Drax will stop at nothing to take his revenge on the most dangerous being in the galaxy.

        GROOT (Vin Diesel)
Groot descends from a race of walking flora and resembles a sentient tree. Despite his strange appearance and limited communication skills, Groot proves to be a valuable ally and a loyal friend—not only to his fellow bounty hunter Rocket but to the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy as well.

        ROCKET (Bradley Cooper)
Rocket is a bounty hunter and mercenary whose mastery of weapons and battle tactics make him a formidable warrior, despite being a genetically altered, cybernetically enhanced, talking raccoon. The result of traumatic biological experimentation, Rocket is a genuine gun-toting badass and mechanical genius who has a huge chip on his shoulder.

        RONAN (Lee Pace)
A Kree radical, Ronan continues to fight an ancient war between his people and the Xandarians. Ronan has struck a bargain with the Machiavellian Thanos — retrieve a mysterious artifact, and in exchange Xandar will finally be eradicated. Ronan leads his army to hunt down Peter Quill and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy when they come between him and his genocidal goal.

        YONDU (Michael Rooker)
Blue-skinned Yondu is an interstellar bandit who has a less-than-perfect paternal relationship with Peter Quill. As leader of the outlaws known as Ravagers, Yondu and his cohorts pillage their way through the galaxy, taking whatever they want for solely their own benefit.

        NEBULA (Karen Gillan)
A blue-skinned deadly assassin, Nebula is a loyal lieutenant in Ronan and Thanos’ employ. Her advanced skill set and cybernetic enhancements make her a valuable asset but her resentment of Thanos’ adoptive daughter Gamora may prove to be her Achilles heel.

        KORATH (Djimon Hounsou)
Korath, a powerful ally of the villainous Ronan, is a feared intergalactic hunter. Korath is a pursuer who is dedicated to the kill and focuses only on one thing—his target.

        RHOMANN DEY (John C. Reilly)
Rhomann Dey is a Corpsman in the Nova Corps, the planet Xandar’s military force. Dey is a loyal and trusted officer but his by-the-book attitude takes a detour when he develops an unlikely rapport with Peter Quill.

        NOVA PRIME (Glenn Close)
Nova Prime Irani Rael is in charge of Nova Corps operations throughout the galaxy. From her base of operations on Xandar, the principled and efficient Nova Prime leads her forces with confidence. She defines her mission above all to protect the citizens of Xandar and keep peace.

        THE COLLECTOR (Benicio Del Toro)
Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector, is the obsessive keeper of the largest collection of interstellar fauna, relics and species in the galaxy. An enigmatic figure, The Collector operates out of a place in space aptly named Knowhere. When he encounters Peter Quill and his band, The Collector attempts to strike a dubious bargain.

Today is the day that many different entertainment websites release their set visits from last year's Guardians of the Galaxy shoot at Shepperton Studios in England (we weren't invited). We've compiled a list of all the set visits we've seen so far, and will be updating the list as the day goes on. We've also put quotes that would be of interest to Galaxians. Check them out below!

        SlashFilm
Chris Pratt Set Interview: Guardians of the Galaxy
"I think Drax is awesome, not only the character but Dave Bautista the actor. I just really adore him so much and think he’s very, very good. Unique. I really love him. And I think Rocket is a great character, not just in a way that you would think. There’s a lot of heart there."

Guardians of the Galaxy: 25 Things We Learned On Set
"The voice of Rocket Raccoon needed fast talking patterns, humour and heart. The filmmakers tested lots of big name stars and voice actors for the role, but found it difficult to find someone who ticked all three boxes. Bradley Cooper eventually landed the part."

On Set With Marvel's Rock'n'Roll Heroes
"...a huge stone and steel structure that looks like the inside of an Aztec cave, but which is actually the interior of The Dark Astor, chief baddie Ronan’s spaceship."

James Gunn: Guardians of the Galaxy are Rolling Stones to Avengers' Beatles
"...the amount of characters from the Marvel universe that we have in this movie, down to very, very minor characters, is enormous. We have way more characters in this movie than any other Marvel movie, and way more Marvel characters, so it is a lot of stuff. For me being an actual Marvel geek, it has been great."

15 Reasons To Get Excited About Guardians of the Galaxy
"The primary antagonist is Ronan. Everyone else, either he works for or they work for him. He works for Thanos, and then Korath and Nebula and initially Gamora all work for him. He’s the primary villain. He’s a really twisted guy. He has a very religious bent in this film. He has a very sick and twisted view of what morality is. Strength is virtue and weakness is sin. That’s what he lives by. He’s very scary because of his beliefs, which are real to him."
