7 Things We Learned From The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Cast and Crew Q&A On Facebook

Submitted by Chris S.
The new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy debuted on Monday, but before the trailer, Guardians fans were treated to a Q&A with James Gunn, Kevin Feige, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillen, Chris Pratt, and Vin Diesel. If you missed it, you can read over the Q&A here. Many questions were asked, and while not all were answered, many of the ones that were, revealed some important information about the film. Here are the top seven things we learned from the Q&A.

1. Everybody loves Groot.
Q: (For Vin Diesel) Is there any chance for you to be cast for another character in the future (in a Marvel movie, of course)?
A: (James Gunn) The best character in the movie isn't enough for you?!!! Everyone who sees the movie loves Groot the most. Really. He’s our baby.

2. We may see other Guardians from the DnA run.
Q: (For Gunn) Are there going to be appearances by any of the other Guardians of the Galaxy from the Abnett/Lanning run without going into specifics?
A: (Gunn) Maybe Sorta.

3. There will be easter eggs of the original Guardians.
Q: (For Gunn) For us fans of the original guardians can we expect anything else cool beyond Yondu (easter egg or otherwise)?
A: (Gunn) Easter egg wise, yes.

4. Rocket is NOT a Raccoon
Q: (For Gunn) Would you rather fight 1 Groot sized Rocket Raccoon, or 10 Rocket Raccoon sized Groots?
A: (Gunn) Definitely one Groot sized Rocket - Groot is way too powerful, unless the Groot sized Rocket has a huge gun, then I'm screwed. And he's not a raccoon.

5. Star-Lord’s guns will be close to the elemental guns from the comics.
Q: (For Chris Pratt) What's Starlord's equipment like? Does he use the Elemental Gun?
A: (Pratt) Yes. It’s not the exact elemental gun that you see in the comics but it’s close. His gun is awesome. Two great blasters and they are amazing.

6. James Gunn is possibly contractually obliged to direct a sequel if there is one.
Q: (For Gunn) If/when Marvel gives the go-ahead for a sequel, would you be willing to revisit Guardians as the director?
A: (Gunn) I believe I am contractually obliged to do that whether I want to or not. But, of course, I'd love it. I love these guys so much - the guys at Marvel and the cast. They've become very close friends.

7. Vin Diesel said “I am Groot” about a thousand times.
Q: (For Diesel) How many times did you have to say the line "I am Groot"?
A: (Diesel) Oh god... maybe a thousand? I don't know. It felt like a thousand. James Gunn and I were having so much with it. So it could've been a thousand. And it was amazing to go in there and to work with someone who wanted to explore the character- we wanted each "I am Groot" to mean something different... It reminded me, as an actor, how much we can do with so little- and if we're passionate about it, good thing can come from it.

Though not as important as the information above, we did learn some other very interesting facts such as:
· Rocket will have a “Very horrible spaceship”.
· The movie may have a connection to an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
· There is a chance at a villains movie poster, or set of, along with a Yondu poster.
· The film was inspired by Magritte's Empire of Light paintings and the films of Sergio Leone.
· The movie will remain true to the spirit of the comic.
· James Gunn is a huge Starhawk fan and while he isn’t in this movie, “the future is beautiful”.

What did you guys think about the Q&A? What news are you most excited to hear? Let us know in the comments below.

FAN ART: The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Take Down Alien Scum In This Vintage Poster By Rob Csiki

Hit the jump for a Q&A with creator Rob Csiki...

Guard The Galaxy: What inspired you to create this piece of art?

Rob Csiki: First and foremost my passion for comics and movies is the short answer. Also, I really wanted to create original pieces of pop art to hang in my place. I have always had a love for vintage movie posters from a long time ago. It seems movie posters today have lost what makes them special to me: they are art! I miss that honestly. So with my enthusiasm for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, it inspired me to create a vintage "sci-fipulp-style" comic book cover poster. James Gunn would often describe his movie as gritty but colorful, like the sci fi movies of yesteryear. So for me it was easy, it was just visualizing it that was a challenge, but a whole lot of fun! The idea for me was to show the Guardians acting like a bunch of "A-holes." It was very important to me to convey each character with the way that I think they would react and behave in any dangerous situation. So as you look at my artwork, simply imagine the scene continuing and see what you come up with.

For me it's like, Rocket will turn the mouthy alien around and BOOM! there goes his head. Speaking of head's, Gamora being "the most dangerous woman in the galaxy, well you can see what just happened to that poor dude in a blink of an eye. Seductive flirtation, and then a cold sword sweeping through his green blooded neck. :)   Then we have Starlord as he is caught off guard. But he will get up, shake it off, adjust his broken mask and then let his elemental pistol do all the work. Poor Groot is in a tangle, but I think the tentacle's will be ripped from limb to limb from wherever that creature came from. Last but not least there's Drax as he is literally  "swept off his feet", but not for long as his blade's will surely make contact with all his rage filled fury not far behind!  It was also key for me to convey a sense of twisted humor in all. I loved creepy and eerie magazines growing up. So I tried to sneak some "bizarre" in the artwork as well. It would be my sincere hope that Mr. Gunn see's this artwork and simply "gets it" and maybe has a chuckle or two about the absurdity of it all. I plan on posting it on his Facebook page, so here is hoping for another compliment like my last poster I posted on there a couple month's back.

GTG: Explain your creative process. How did you create this?

RC: This is a true labor of creative love that is for sure. I started with a geeky idea, a thumbnail sketch and the word's "A bunch of A-Hole's" to drive my creative concept forward. Then came some props, a small tripod, a pretty cheap digital camera and my living room and kitchen as a photo studio. I modeled all the poses in the shot and began the long task of laying out the composition in Phototshop. The rest is about 200 or so Frankenstein layers of reference textures, images, and lot's of digital painting to make it all whole. This is a true hybrid piece of pop art! I used everything I taught myself over the years physical and digital art-wise that I am truly excited by the finish product.

GTG: What's next for Rob Csiki?

RC: Possibly Marvel studios hiring me to do custom posters! Ha ha!  Seriously though, it is a toss up right now. I want to do a poster with Hellboy in it, done in a Frank Frazetta style of him standing over a pile of monsters smoking his cigar. Kind of like Conan the Destroyer back in the day but with a humorous style. Or there is a poster of Spider-Man I want to do for a friend mine. It would have his 3 year son in it, as he is a fanatical Spidey fan right now. I would like to do my interpretation of the Amazing Fantasy No. 15 cover, but his son is replacing the thug, but he is screaming for joy as he swing's through New York with his bud Spidey.  :)

Thanks to Rob for being such an awesome guy and providing us with the interview. He has truly created something wonderful for Galaxians to enjoy. Personally, I would love to have a poster of this on my wall. What do you think of his art? Drop us a comment section below!

Marvel has released preview pages for Guardians of the Galaxy #15 (via Comic Vine). The issue is written by Brian Michael Bendis, with pencils by Nick Bradshaw.

When the issue starts, the Guardians have been taken prisoner and split up. Based on these pages, we know that Rocket is a prisoner of the Kree Empire, and Gamora is a prisoner of the Badoon. The whereabouts of Groot and Starlord are currently unknown. The issue drops next Wednesday, May 28th (along with the second movie prelude comic).

COMICS: Lyesmith's Tin-Foil-Hat Ramblings Revisited (Editorial)

$

0

Cosmic Greetings once again, fellow Galaxians! While anxiously awaiting the Q&A and 2nd full-length trailer release, I decided it would be a good time to revisit my tin-foil-hat ramblings and speculations (though I may hold back the release of this post until after the Q&A excitement as died down). I'll be going over the last post covering the things I got terribly wrong and the things I got right, and re-speculating on what the future may hold for our Guardians of the Marvel universe, at least as far as the comics are concerned.

Okay, first to recap, I made three different points in my original post. First one was on these panels.

My original assessment of these scenes were that, like the majority of the other panels like this, it was Peter seeing different versions of himself. Now we know that's wrong. Jean met up with the Guardians during Trial of Jean Grey, which explains her appearance with Peter in the bottom panel on the right. They're currently teamed-up with Captain Marvel. From the Original Sin promos we've seen, Nova comes back in some relation to Thanos. So I was totally off-base with that speculation. Interestingly enough, however, we still haven't seen hide-nor-hair of the male Captain Marvel, shown in both panels, and both shown next to Thanos. Hmmmm. What could that mean? Is it the same Captain Marvel we've seen before? Will he be working with Thanos? We may not get that answer until after Original Sin, or perhaps during. Either way, I think it's a wonderful sign that they've been planning these stories and events months ahead of time. Sometimes it feels like they're pulling things out of the air, especially with the Guardians between big events, but clearly that isn't the case. Even if we don't always agree with the direction they take our heroes in, they have a plan and definite direction they're going in.

Tin Foil Hat Specualtion #2

This panel and the following scene with Peter lead me to believe that perhaps Thanos and Peter are connected somehow, and simply can't kill each other. I also speculated that RichardRider either sacrificed, willing or not, his escape from the Cancerverse to allow Peter's escape. Again, from the Original Sin promos we've seen, Nova appears with Thanos. In my opinion, he doesn't look happy, and Thanos looks rather smug. I imagine them confronting Peter. Perhaps Thanos and Peter /are/ connected and /can't/ kill each other, but that may not extend to Nova.

If Peter used Nova to orchestrate his own escape, leaving Nova behind, that would make for a very cranky Nova. Our Peter seems more impetuous now than he did during DnA's run. However, during DnA's run the status quo was a bit different. The Guardians were more organized and could be held more responsible for their actions, as to now, they're outlaws on the run and don't have Cosmo looking over their shoulders all the time. Perhaps that kept Peter in check a little more. Classic StarLord was always closer to this cocky and impetuous StarLord we have now.

But that's assuming Peter did it all on purpose! Another way to go is that during the act of trying to escape, something went wrong and Peter was able to slip through and Richard wasn't. Thanos could easily spin that into Peter leaving Richard behind.

Tin Foil Hat Speculation #3 - Where the flark is Bug??

Unfortunately we have yet to get an answer to this. He shows up out of the blue in the middle of the timeline and then we never see him again. While I'm sure they took him out to keep from confusing new readers who were coming in on the tails of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie news, it's still very frustrating and something they should've considered before throwing a fan favorite in there only to yank him out later. I like endings. I like complete stories with no cliffhangers and unexplained questions. They gave us a small Mantis cameo in Volume 3, which was appreciated and loved, and I'd love to see something like that for Bug.

So there you have it, Galaxians. Way off base on one, the second half-explained and still could go either way, and then you have Bug's disappearance still unexplained. Another two points that our fearless leader Cameron brought up in the comments of the last post...

Who was that in Rocket's Infinite Comic?
Who put a hit out on Gamora and why did that mercenary guy not die?

We still haven't seen anything touched on the Rocket storyline that was set up, and there's so much potential there that it's hard not to feel frustrated that we haven't seen anything on that - but in a good way! We just really want to see that story.

We have seen a little more on Gamora's assassination attempt. The Badoon hired the assassin to capture Gamora, as seen in Guardiansof the Galaxy #14. So we're on the verge of seeing that particular storyline come to fruition.

Can you think of any other storyline that haven't been wrapped up? Give us your own speculations, no matter how crazy they may be!

PREVIEW: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Prelude #2

Next Wednesday (May 28th), the second 'Guardians of the Galaxy Movie Prelude Comic' will be released to comic stores everywhere. The issue was written by the great Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett, who also wrote the much beloved Volume 2 of Guardians of the Galaxy.

The issue features some backstory on Rocket Raccoon (yes, we will continue to call him that) and his loveable, deadly tree friend, Groot. It takes place before the duo team up with Peter Quill, Gamora, and Drax. At the start of the comic, Rocket and Groot are at a space station called 'The Hub,' and seem to have gotten into a fair bit of trouble with some criminals. The issue looks to be a lot of fun, and with DnA writing it, I'm sure it will be fantastic, just like the last movie prelude comic (the Nebula one).

Flarkin' Awesome 011 - A Raccoon By Any Other Name (EDITORIAL)

$
0
0
Cosmic Greetings, my fellow Raccoonatics! I come to you today as your Commander to discuss a word. A word that I feel is very relevant to the discussions of Rocket Raccoon at this time. And that word. Is Change. Change can be good and change can be bad. One of its worst forms for a comic fan, with few exceptions, is the retcon. Rewriting the history of a character or series of events simply for the convenience of a current story or, possibly worse, doing so to create marketing synergy with a movie (that is supposed to be set in a different universe, anyway). Those learning of Rocket Raccoon today will know Rocket differently than those who have known him since Guardians volume 2 and earlier...

Flarkin' Awesome 011 – A Raccoon By Any Other Name

Yes, it has been a while since I provided an entry in this series (roughly two months as of this writing). The subjects I am discussing today have been touched upon in past articles, but they have developed in recent months and there are decisions that I have made as Rocket's #1 fan that I feel are somewhat important. (More After the Jump)

Once upon a time, it was said that Rocket Raccoon (note the surname) was a genetically modified raccoon from Halfworld. Raccoons are cunning, clever creatures, if you had sufficient technology, as many alien races in the 616 do, making something like Rocket out of a raccoon would be very plausible. It is such a humble origin made grand by great accomplishments as a hero, despite not having real superpowers. That is a wonderful, inspiring origin.

We go from this in 1976....

And this in 1985...

And this in 2008...

And this a bit later...

And Marvel Heroes released June of just last year...

To this in 2014...

Yes, I know. What the flark happened?! Back when hints of this retcon first showed themselves in October, my prime suspect was Brian Michael Bendis, he was the writer for the new Guardians of the Galaxy series and would logically have the most creative input on the direction of those characters, even when they appeared in a series he did not write, like Captain Marvel, above. Plus, he was also involved in the Ultimate Spider-man cartoon, where the retcon first technically reared its head. And Mr. Bendis continued to be the suspect, until I found something out...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a different universe, it is and should be allowed to be different in numerous ways from the 616, the mainstream comic universe. However, there is something called synergy and one of the goals of the Marvel NOW relaunches was to try and get some of the elements of their comics closer to the MCU counterparts. You see, I had been operating under the assumption that, even if Bendis said Rocket is no longer a raccoon, he would definitely be one in the MCU. After all, James Gunn was inspired by the pre-Bendis DnA run of Guardians. He extensively researched raccoons for the characters. And used a real-life raccoon named Oreo as a model for Rocket. That all definitely indicated Rocket would be a raccoon on the movie...

But, then, on Monday, there was a Q&A session on Facebook before the debut of the new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy. In response to something that was a joke in which someone called Rocket, Rocket Raccoon. James' response referred to him simply as Rocket and added as a last sentence. “He's not a raccoon.” The joke involved Groot as well, so I thought, maybe, it was a misunderstanding and I asked him on Twitter...

I did get a response from James Gunn, indirectly, after a follower responded to my inquiry by saying it must've been a joke... "I adore @Raccoonatic but it’s no joke. Rocket’s an alien raccoon-like lower life form genetically modified."

And also... "@Raccoonatic He’s no more a raccoon than human-looking aliens are human. We see him as a raccoon so #YearoftheRaccoon is still ok" (That last line is a silver lining, at least and we will get to that later)

What does this have to do with the MCU, marketing synergy, and my suspecting Bendis for causing the retcon? Note that those tweets present an origin for Rocket that is very similar to the 616 retcon for Rocket as it was first presented on the Ultimate Spider-man cartoon. I bring this up because, in my conversation with James on Twitter, he also said... "I wrote his cinematic origin story." Not Bendis. I had been looking at it backwards thinking that James was staying closer to the old status quo for Rocket and Bendis was changing things, just because. Now, I am thinking, since this retcon seems to have originated with James, that Bendis was told, my by higher-ups involved in marketing, to change Rocket's origin to be closer to the MCU. In this situation, if that is what happened (and this is all speculation, let me make that clear), neither would really be at fault. James was making an MCU version of a character how he felt he should and Bendis was following orders, so to speak. No matter how things happened, or who did what, one fact stands, it is what it is, and what is that...

Rocket Raccoon is not a raccoon. He never was one in the MCU (and, in fact, his name in the movie, in all official places is not even Rocket Raccoon but just Rocket). And, while he was one for decades in the 616, he is not one any longer. That's the reality, whether you love it or hate it. It is all Marvel's creation and their decisions are the only ones that count. But remember that silver lining...

If James Gunn, who, at the very least, used a similar origin story for Rocket as Marvel NOW and Bendis uses, says that it is ok to casually refer to Rocket as a raccoon, well guess what, that's what we can do. We will still be Raccoonatics, etc. After all, most people who have called Rocket a raccoon lately and incurred his wrath have done so mockingly or condescendingly. We, his fans, use it in the most complimentary way possible. Not unlike calling someone who is very awesome at something a “beast”. I don't think Rocky would mind too much, and I'd like to think, retcon aside, I know him fairly well. We cannot correct someone if they matter-of-factly say he is not one, true, but if anyone gives you trouble, as a fan, for calling him a raccoon, you send them to the Commander, I'll tell them how it is.

Now, we have that dropping of the Cockney accent thing, too. Less of an issue, but I think I've worked out an explanation for that, if you need one. Rocket Raccoon is a witty and cunning guy, who seems to enjoy being the center of attention. Let's just say he was messing around with a fake accent to be funny or to stand out more. Or, hey, maybe he was just going through a phase where he was obsessed with English culture. Maybe a bit far-fetched, but Steve Blum did the accent convincingly and he's from Santa Monica.

Where does that leave us in the future, I don't know. I think there is a chance, someday, well after the Guardians movie comes out, they will revisit Rocket's origin, maybe make him a raccoon again. Things like this do often have a way of coming back around. For now, we have to accept this reality for Rocket. But we are still Raccoonatics and 2014 is still the Year of the Raccoon. So, until next time, see ya 'round the, yes, Raccooniverse.

Marvel Heroes "2015" Season Begins - Some Quick Cosmic Stuff

$

Cosmic Greetings, Leo Wyld, your Raccoonatic Commander, reporting!

June 4th, 2014 marks one year since the live launch of Marvel Heroes for the general public.  As such, Gazillion, being suckers for events of all sorts, are having a big celebration for the week (that includes a massive multitude of gifts for its players) and a big patch, as well. A patch that Gazillion is considering the start of a new "season" of the game, titled "Marvel Heroes 2015"

The big item in the patch is a first for Marvel Heroes (and a novelty for an ARPG, in general), a raid. This ten-man raid will serve as the conclusion of the current Asgard storyline and will involve battles across numerous bosses in the fiery realm of Muspelheim, culminating in a showdown with the mighty (and gigantic) Surtur. As the conclusion of the Asgard storyline, we can expect it to have a post-boss cutscene that will indicate where we are going next. I have a feeling it'll be somewhere cosmic (Gazillion has already teased it will somehow involve Skrulls, let's hope for a Knowhere hub!)

The patch will also introduce the Omega System, something similar to Everquest's Alternate Advancement system. The Omega System will allow you to earn points, independent of experience, that you spend on various bonuses spread across several different fields of SHIELD research (like the arcane, nanotech, advanced weaponry, etc.). And new fields of research will unlock in the future as more story is added to Marvel Heroes (hint, perhaps? there are some decidedly spacey-sounding fields of research that start off locked)

It will also add a Shared Quest system that allows you to complete various daily quests, not unlike the existing legendary quest system. Unlike the legendary quest system, however, the shared quests can be done with a party, if you so choose.

There will also be changes to the way buff powers work across all heroes. And Rocket's skill tree has been reorganized to be a bit more friendly to newcomers. Why... well...

That is a picture that Jeff "Doomsaw" Donais posted as a teaser. What is it? It is what a new player starting the game will see after the June 4th patch. That is, Rocket Raccoon is going to be one of the selectable starter heroes! Now, if you already have an account and have played, this will not give you him for free or anything. But if you, for some reason, have not yet logged into and checked out Marvel Heroes yet, and especially if you are a Rocket fan, after the patch would be a great time to finally check out the game. And, of course, this might help earn our favorite procyonid protagonist some more fans alongside the approaching movie.

One more bit of cosmic Marvel Heroes news, Beta Ray Bill was scheduled to be released as a new team-up (I explained team-ups in my last gaming update). Unfortunately, he requires more polish and will not be released until the patch *after* the Anniversary patch (which, not so bad, *may* be as soon as Friday the 6th)

And one last thing, there is supposed to be a surprise hero announced (which may not be a surprise by the time you read this) with the anniversary celebration. It has been hinted that the hero is in the new 2015 splash screen at the top of this article.

Update: It turns out the surprise hero is the Silver Surfer, after all. So, hey, more cosmic news for this segment! He will be on Test Center on Friday the 6th, which likely would mean a release next week.

Until next time, stay awesome, and see ya round the 'Raccooniverse!
