The Mug Is Available to the General Public!

New York ComicCon 2012 and San Diego ComicCon 2013 had a certain exclusive item for sale, as conventions always do.  This was around the time I was first truly becoming a Raccoonatic and this particular item was one I really wanted.  A coffee mug with art by Joe Quesada that was later used for a variant cover of Guardians of the Galaxy.  I was not really following NYCC '12 but, when I found out they were selling them at SDCC '13, which I could not attend, I hoped I could find a way to acquire one.  I had a couple leads, one involved having Agent M ask then-Gazillion employee Stephen "Rockjaw" Reid in an interview to nab me the one of the merch table in the interview area. Another lead involved a guildie, and is, long story, why I started using my now-standard "Cosmic greetings!".  Neither lead panned out and the mugs were a no show at NYCC 2013 (which I also didn't attend).  They went up in price on Ebay to hundreds!  But now there is good turn to this story, this quest, for me, and all the Raccoonatics out there...

Marvel has started selling the mug on their online store! Just 15 dollars! And, even crazier, I find this out in a Marvel Heroes forum message from Onoroian (the awesome friend who bought me a NYCC Rocket plushie).  And I find it out because he tells me he has shipped me one! (he still had my address from the plushie).

Even if you do not have a great friend like that... you can get a mug for yourself at http://www.marvelstore.com/guardians-of-the-galaxy-rocket-raccoon-mug/mp/13879/0/

And tell 'em the Raccoonatic Commander sent ya. (Ok, no way to actually do that. Just go buy one, Raccoonatics!)

Just when you think it's all over, they pull you right back in. That's what Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan must be thinking today, as they rehearse their extended fight scene for Guardians of the Galaxy. Saldana and Gillan both posted the following picture, while mentioning additional shooting on Twitter.

Also, Firefly and Castle star, Nathan Fillion, was recently asked by a fan at Wizard World Comic Con, whether he had wished for a role in Guardians of the Galaxy. Fillion replied, "Wanting to get a part… or maybe did. I’m just saying maybe. Maybe you’ll be surprised. Maybe. Check the credits.” What sort of role would you like to see Fillion play? FANDOM: Exclusive Interview With Rob Csiki, Creator Of Sensational GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Fan Poster

We recently talked to Rob Csiki, creator of the ever-popular Guardians of the Galaxy fan poster (pictured to the left). He was kind enough to answer a few questions for us, as well as provide us with an updated version of his poster, which features 'The Milano' spaceship.

Guard The Galaxy:"How long have you been making fan posters?"

Rob Csiki:"I have only been doing posters on and off for two years, but have worked in Photoshop for over twenty-three years in my career."

GTG:"Do you plan to do anymore posters in the near future?"

RC:"I am planning on doing a fully illustrated digital painting of the Guardians in time for the movie's release. Fan-art mind you. Done in a vintage/sci-fi pulp style featuring: "A bunch of A-Holes!""

GTG:"Have you gotten any feedback from anyone at Marvel?"

RC:"No I have not. I did have James Gunn comment today on his Facebook page after I posted the poster on his page. Quote: "Rob Csiki, love that sir.""

GTG:"Who is your favorite Guardian and why?"

RC:"I love Rocket and Groot and how close they are. It is my hope that they become as "household" as C-3PO and R2-D2 (Which I think they will). Rocket is like a tiny version of Wolverine. He has a big heart and is very protective of his family, the Guardians. I mean he is the only one of his kind and he is very angry and lost, but deep down he has the biggest heart. I truly hope James wasn't kidding when he said he is the "heart of the movie". Because if you can connect and get choked-up by a talking, gun-toting raccoon, then Marvel films can do no wrong in my book."

Rob was also kind enough to create a new banner for us, which can be seen at the top of our site! Let us know what you think of the interview, the new banner, and Rob's poster in comment section below!

New Batch Of Fresh GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Plot Points From Entertainment Weekly

Director James Gunn recently talked to Entertainment Weekly about Guardians of the Galaxy, revealing new information and plot points that we hadn't heard yet. Check out the quotes below!

On Peter Quill (Starlord): "He was abducted from Earth (specifically, Missouri) at age 8 and "raised in a group of thieves and smugglers called the Ravagers. He's good with the ladies and a little bit of a d*ck and very lucky."

On Gamora:"Thanos slaughtered her family and Nebula's, then raised them together as siblings. They were bio engineered to become living weapons. So she's really good at killing people."

On Drax: "Drax is a little mysterious in the movie. But we do know that his wife and child were killed by Ronan and he's very singularly focused on revenge."

On Groot:"He's very innocent. He just wants to be liked by Rocket and do the right thing."

On Rocket Raccoon: "A talking, gun-toting raccoon-like creature-and another product of bioengineering. For me, it's not Bugs Bunny in the middle of the Avengers. It's this little gnarled, creepy beast who is very sad and alone."

The article also revealed that Thanos will be "motion capture" and that Guardians will "definitely be connected to Avengers 3". Don't know about you guys, but these quotes are getting me pumped! Drop us a comment below and let us know what you think!

Marvel Producer Talks About The Look Of Animated GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, Plus New Movie Stickers

Marvel.com recently conducted an interview with Cort Lane, Supervising Producer of Marvel's animated shows, including Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble. Lane talked a little bit about the look of the Guardians of the Galaxy in those series.
"When we went into pre-production on the ["Guardians and Spaceknights" episode of Avengers Assemble], they were not far into pre-production on the [Guardians of the Galaxy] film for us to match up with what they were doing. So, we made our best guess based on what was happening in publishing. We’ll start to align more as appearances of the Guardians continue."
This is good news for Galaxians (fans of Guardians), since many people have complained about Starlord's look recently. With longstanding rumors of a Guardians of the Galaxy animated series in the works, hopefully we can expect to see Starlord's much-lauded mask appear. For the rest of the interview, click here.

In other news, Trends International has begun selling these Guardians of the Galaxy stickers (pictured to the left), based off of the characters in the upcoming film (We asked Trends for a larger image, but this is the best one they could give us). The stickers feature Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, The Milano Ship, a Nova Corps officer, the Guardians of the Galaxy logo, the Starlord fire emblem, and the Nova Corps emblem. There is probably another sheet underneath the one pictured with other stickers too. If we can track one down, we'll post better pictures.

We were told that these are being sold now, so check Walmart, ToysRUs, and Target. If you find them, send us an e-mail and let us know where. Or you could always drop us a comment below, of course.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Gaming Update With Leo Wyld

$

0
Cosmic greetings, all! This is your Raccoonatic Commander. No, this is not another issue of Flarkin' Awesome! (Taking a short break from that for now). But I did want to give ya some news related to some Marvel game stuff.  I have news primarily about two games: Marvel Heroes and MarvelAvengers Alliance.

Avengers Alliance Update: 4/14 - After running this article, I got contacted by some long-time players of the game.  Apparently, exclusive does not *really* mean exclusive. All PvP tournament heroes have eventually become purchasable with command points. That's the good news. The bad news is that all PvP tournament heroes have eventually become purchasable with command points. Based on history, it will be about three months from this writing before Rocket can be bought with command points. Still frustrating, but at least there is something to look forward to (although there will still be that taunting popup each login). If you want to give feedback to the AA people about this, their Twitter handle is @MarvelAlliance, they also have a Facebook page and forum.

I'll get the bad news out of the way first.  You may recall we ran a story about the Guardians of the Galaxy being planned additions to the Facebook game Marvel Avengers Alliance. The first of the team arrived and it is a little guy with an awesome buncha' fans.  But here's the bad news, he is advertised as a PvP exclusive and a prize for winning top league in the PvP.  I'd be surprised if I could win a single match in PvP, let alone the top prize and I have a feeling many would be in the same boat.  People who compete in such things are ruthless, sneaky, and I would not be surprised if some found exploits to use. Not to mention that the best weapons and gear cost gold.  Gold costs real money.  You can earn gold for free, but slowly.  And, since this particular competition has a limited time duration, it essentially makes it pay-to-win, or rather, pay-to-have-a-chance to win Rocket Raccoon. I apologize for any Raccoonatics who started playing this game after hearing that Guardians announce, hoping to one day play their favorite hero (that's what I did), but it looks like that will just not happen for most of us.

But the good news for Raccoonatics is that there is still one other online game where you cannot only play Rocket, but probably the most thorough and accurate representation of the hero in gaming form. And that is my particular game of choice Marvel Heroes.  They've been steady with updates, adding the likes of Moon Knight, Dr. Strange, and Taskmaster recently.  But I am primarily gonna discuss a fun little addition called Team-Ups that has little to do with Guardians now, but may have a lot to do with it in the future. I'll explain... (More After the Jump)

So, what are team-ups? There are three modes to them. One mode is just a passive bonus, for which the team-up is not ever visible. The second mode is a power that you can use every so often where the team-up comes out does some attacking and then leaves. The third mode and probably most popular is that the team-up fights at your side until he or she gets killed, at which point, given the cooldown has lapsed, you can re-summon.  So, essentially they are sidekicks. It is an avenue that allows Gazillion to add heroes who may not have enough moves to justify a full playable hero powerset or maybe for heroes who are just not popular or mainstream enough to justify spending the resources needed for a full hero. They also made it clear that a hero being a team-up does not rule out them being playable at some point, in fact, one of the team-ups has been a playable hero since day one. They do not drop as loot, but they, like heroes, are purchasable with the loot collectible eternity splinters (or you can just show Gazillion some support and buy G's currency with real money to buy them right away).  (For more details, and I don't wanna make this too long, check out this FAQ. There were some changes after that was written, damage bonuses for all the team-ups were changed to general damage buffs, so you do not have to pick a particular team-up anymore for a particular type of damage dealing hero)

Currently available Team-Ups:

Spider-Man

This is the already playable I mentioned.  Why have him as a team-up?  "Marvel Team-Ups" is a comic series, sorta, that inspired this feature.  And the star was our Mr. Parker.  All the team-ups are voice-acted and say quips to your hero, defeated enemies, other heroes, etc.  While the main Spider-Man on Marvel Heroes is voiced by Ultimate Spider-Man's Drake Bell, the Team-Up version (like the enhanced Symbiote and Back in Black costumes for Spidey) is voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes, who voiced the character in the 90's series.  So, if you want to stay true to the spirit of "Marvel Team-Ups" and/or fondly remember the 90's Spider-Man cartoon, he might be a good choice for you.

He also has buffs to dodge I believe, as part of his abilities.

Firestar

And the next Team-Up we have is one of Spidey's "Amazing Friends" (old cartoon ref).  She uses microwave based powers and, combined with her out of this world appearance, I think she'd be a fitting team-up for Rocket.  Not to mention she seems quite fond of our little space raccoon.  One of her quips when she gets near Rocky, "Ohhhhh, can I keep him?" Although, I don't think Rocket would appreciate being treated like a pet, well, maybe he wouldn't mind as much with Firestar. Hehheh.

Magik

Next up i Colossus' kid sister Illyana Rasputin aka Magik.  The X-Man and New Mutant uses powers
related to demons, portals, and that big flarkin' sword.  Illyana has a bit of an edge and, that alone, makes her a somewhat cool choice of Team-Up for Rocket.  But she also has bonuses to summons, so if you play Rocket relying on turrets and such, she may be a good choice for you.

Falcon

On your left, heh, that's the team-up I chose for Rocket.  While the appearance and powers are directly inspired by the cinematic Anthony Mackie interpretation of the hero, the voice reminds me more of him on the Avengers Assemble cartoon.  Speaking of which, I had decided Falcon would be my Team-Up already.  Then I saw the "Guardians and Space Knights" episode of Avengers Assemble (first time I've ever seen that cartoon, but I, as Raccoonatic Commander,  fully recommend this episode).  On the episode, Falcon and Rocket briefly pair up, crazy coincidence or maybe just the writers of the show seeing the same potential I did.  His greetings to Rocket, by the way, is "You're the master strategist, furball, tell me what I need to do."  Amusing about that, on Avengers Assemble, Falcon also once calls Rocket "furball".  Intentional, maybe, but still cool.  A gun-wielding military man and a tactical genius who also kinda likes guns, sounds like a good team to me.  Throw in Rocket's Groot summon and you have one serious badass alliance.

So, yes, none of these are Guardians or have any affiliation with the Guardians of the Galaxy.  But one thing the Guardians have been doing in the past couple years on TV and in the comics is interacting with heroes you would not expect.  And this is especially true of Rocket Raccoon.  From trading quips related to his species with Hawkeye in the Avengers Assemble comic to making Tony Stark feel like a primitive idiot to swooning over Angela to recently having a pet-related argument with Carol "Captain Marvel" Danvers.  And there is something else...

Gazillion said they want to try to do a couple team-ups a month, but added that just before the Guardians of the Galaxy movie release they may not release any.  Why? They have plans for team-ups with the Guardians movie release, and they sound like they are gonna be big.  They mentioned a couple people with green skin in a stream, so I am thinking Drax and Gamora, at least, but maybe we will see a team-up version of Groot based more on the movie version or maybe some other Guardians alumni.  (On the subject of Gamora, I had reported she was planned to be coming as playable and David Brevik himself said so in chat, but plans do change.  And, recently, Gazillion has gone on record as saying she is not planned playable this year *or* next.  But I am, again, quite certain she will be one of the team-ups in August)

What Guardians would you like to see as team-ups, Galaxians?  Leave your comments here, or, even better, post them in this topic.

That's all I got for ya now.  Keep having fun, stay awesome and, until next time, see ya 'round the Raccooniverse.

Greetings, Galaxians! We've got a few bits of Guardians of the Galaxy news for you, so we decided to compile them into one "roundup" post (just to make things easier on all of us). Well...what are we waiting for? Let's get to it!

Behind-The-Scenes Clip of Guardians To Air Tuesday Night on ABC
This Tuesday night, at 9pm EST, tune into Marvel'sAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Guardians of the Galaxy film. It is currently unknown how much new footage will be revealed, but we can probably expect something similar to the exclusive MTV segment that aired last week. Check back here after the segment airs, as we will be posting a video of the clip as soon as it is made available (as well as screencaps).

First Look at Free Comic Book Day Guardians Comic
For those of you who live under a rock, Free Comic Book Day is a holiday where local comic book stores give away exclusive (you guessed it) free comic books to customers. This year, the holiday falls on Saturday, May 3rd, and there will be two free Guardians-related offerings. One is a Rocket Raccoon one-shot comic, written by Joe Caramagna (who we recently conducted an interview with), and the other is a Guardians of the Galaxy comic, written by Brian Michael Bendis.

Thanks to blog, The Spinner Rack, we now have our first look at the latter comic, illustrated beautifully by Nick Bradshaw and Scott Hana. The comic features Starlord with his updated "movie look," featuring his mask, and signature red jacket. Click the image to the right to enlarge.

New Guardians T-Shirt Featuring Artwork By Steve McNiven
Comics Infinity are currently accepting pre-orders for this eye-popping Guardians of the Galaxy shirt, with artwork by former Guardians artist, Steve McNiven. The t-shirt features artwork from the cover of last year's comic, Guardians of the Galaxy #1 by Brian Michael Bendis. The shirt will be released to stores in June. Check it out below!

New Guardians Holiday Kids Book In December
On December 16th of this year, Marvel will be releasing a kids book called 'Starlord: Knowhere To Run'. Here is the description:
"Star-Lord, aka, Peter Quill, is having an amazing time on Planet Knowhere hanging out with the other Guardians of the Galaxy, until his birthday comes along. Peter is suddenly homesick and longs to be with his family . . . or at least other humans. His friends try to cheer him up but nothing is working. That is until he gets a message from Captain Marvel. She is on a mission searching for a Super Skrull who holds the key to a device that could destroy Earth! The Super Skrull is on Knowhere and she asks Peter to help her find the villain and save Earth. But Captain Marvel informs Peter that since the Skrull is a shape-shifter, they cannot trust anyone, including the Guardians. Can Star-Lord save his family on Earth, without losing the family he has created on Knowhere?"
It seems like Marvel is really pushing the connection between Captain Marvel and the Guardians lately. Could we possibly see Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) make an appearance in the Guardians film? Probably not, but we can dream, can't we?

Thanks for reading and keep on guarding this awesome galaxy of ours, Galaxians (And drop us a comment below, as usual)!

Next Wednesday (4/23/14), issue #14 of Brian Michael Bendis'Guardians of the Galaxy run will be released, and it is a big one! Not only is it the 100th issue of Guardians (of all time), it will also feature three different comics in one. The three comics are written by Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Abnett, and Andy Lanning (respectively). Here's a quote from the series' editor, Mike Marts (courtesy of CBR):
"In the main story you've got Brian Bendis and Nick Bradshaw telling a captivating story about Peter Quill and the fact that the Guardians are separated and pretty much at the mercy of J-Son of Spartax. You've also got the character of Venom, who has come from Earth and is trying to figure out how he can fit into the Guardians and into the larger Galaxy. Then we've got two extremely interesting stories to wrap up the book. One is written by Dan Abnett and drawn by Gerardo Sandoval, and then another story that is written by Andy Lanning and illustrated by Phil Jimenez."
