Greeting, Galaxians! Our field reporter Kyle Allen is on the scene at New York Comic-Con this week and will be keeping us up-to-date with anything and everything Guardians of the Galaxy related. We will be keeping this post at the top of our page and updating it regularly, so keep checking back for more updates.

  • Sunday: The Guardians of the Galaxy footage was shown once again at the Marvel Unlimted Panel.
  • Saturday: Here's a couple of  GOTG cosplayers at NYCC:
  • Friday Wrap-Up from Kyle:
"So my first day of NYCC is over and it was amazing. While I didn't see nearly as much GOTG stuff as I was hoping, but the amount of cool stuff there is overwhelming.

Panels: I got to attend the Comic Book Men panel (which pretty much turned into the Kevin Smith/Clerks 3 panel) and the Avengers Panel. There was no mention of any GOTG stuff at the Avengers panel, but they did announce a bunch of really cool books such as Avengers World, Loki, and Avengers Undercover (which is the fallout from the amazing Avengers Arena).

GOTG Stuff: While browsing the daunting amount of retailers there, I did not find much Gotg merchandise. The highlight of what I did see had the be the Groot Bust that was recently released (priced around $250). Along with a lack of merch, I did not come across any Gotg cosplay. This might change today since Saturday is the biggest of the three days, but I also can't wait to see how much this increased at next years NYCC because then we will be in a post GOTG movie environment.

Day 2: So for my second day of Comic-Con I have some big plans. I'm hoping the attend the Marvel Video Games Panel, The Marvel Now & Inhumanity Panel, and the Agents of Shield panel. I got cut out of a few panels yesterday so I'm hoping I can make of three of these, pictures will follow."

  • Friday 12:33: Marvel has been giving out the poster above at NYCC. It is the Guardians of the Galaxy #8 cover by Francesco Francavilla.
  • Friday 11:50am: At the X-Men panel, it was announced that the Guardians of the Galaxy comic would be crossing over with The All-New X-Men in 'The Trial of Jean Grey.'"The Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't like people getting too close to Earth. They take it upon themselves to team up with the All-New X-Men to get Jean Grey."Stuart Immonen and Sara Pichelli will be illustrating.

    • Friday 10:43am: Our NYCC correspondent Kyle has arrived at New York Comic Con and sent us this picture:

    • Thursday: Agent M posted the picture above on Twitter with the NYCC exclusive Rocket Raccoon plush. It's definitely larger than I thought.
    • Thursday: Guardians of the Galaxy footage was shown at the "Diamond Retailers Breakfast" on Thursday morning. So far, it seems that it was the same footage shown at SDCC.

Lyesmith's GotG #7 Review - Warning: Spoilers - All of them

Guardians of the Galaxy is my favorite comic out right now, for a number of reasons. Love or hate Bendis, he's on a mission; to give a comic that ties into Infinity, but also prepares new and old readers alike for the upcoming movie based on this title. Are the characters exactly like the movie? No, yet neither are they exactly like we've seen before. This title also introduces Angela, formerly of Image Comics, and her return to the comic book page. I love her dynamic with the team and the possibilities she presents if she stays in the title, and as future story arc ads suggest, she does.

Hit the jump to see the full review!

This issue also touches on a sensitive subject; Rocket Raccoon and his status as raccoon or alien. Now, we don't get a lot of info on this, but we do get a snip-it. A crumb. A tiny iota of information to chew on while we anticipate where Marvel is taking this character for the future. Check this out.

So still yet, no definitive answer on him being a raccoon or not, but it's a step. Check out The Raccoonatic's editorial - Retcon Alert for a full report on the issue and speculations on where this character might end up.

As for the rest of this comic, we get some back story on Angela, who FINALLY speaks out-loud. Some cute back and forth between Tony and Peter, with lots more glowering and glaring from Gamora! After hearing Angela's story about experiencing the same time-space break-event that Peter did, Peter lets her go to Earth to see it for herself. Gamora is /not/ okay with this. She doesn't trust Angela and doesn't understand why Peter does. Having only heard stories about the place (Her Spawn history wiped? This Angela is a completely new Angela? Hmmm. Not sure how I feel about that.) -

     - She finds herself bewildered and a bit sad at what she finds. Peter explains the problem to everyone, and Tony admits to knowing the issue and what caused it. The Guardians follow Angela to Earth; Peter and Tony approaching her to gauge her reaction at what she finds. Peter gives her a communication device, telling her to reach him anytime she needs. She replies that she hasn't gotten him anything, and while Peter assures her it's not necessary, she, insisting on returning the favor, flies off. Odd... But as she disappears, Peter asks Tony if he's worried that Angela isn't the only surprise from the time-space event. Tony says yes, he is, but wouldn't it be nice if she was the worst of it? And we get a shot of numerous large and dangerous-looking alien ships headed to Earth.

As with the other issues, this one goes quickly, very fast-paced, so it feels like you don't get much information. But we got Angela talking, a piece of Rocket info, foreboding alien invasion, and we didn't have to wait more than month to see it! I'm calling this a win, guys! Haha I find myself grinning and laughing at loud at these issues. I'm probably going to read this several more times today before it gets put away.

What do you guys think? Is the issue as much fun as I thought it was, or am I on some kind of GotG contact high? Is Angela staying a good thing or a bad thing? Can we discern /anything/ from the information we've gotten about Rocket in this issue? Are Gamora and Angela too much sexy for one issue to hold? Drop us a comment and let us know!

DISCUSSION - The Personalities of the Galaxy

I posted my review of Guardians of the Galaxy #7 to Reddit, and later I saw this reply.

"I just want the 2008 guardians back. These don't even try to act like the same people."

This is what poured forth from my fingertips in form a reply.

"But they're not the same people. They survived through hellacious ordeals, huge, galaxy spanning cataclysms. When we first found Peter at the beginning on Annihilation, he was tortured and broken and hated himself and very idea of being called Star-Lord again.

Drax has been denied his life's goal over and over again, only to obtain it by dooming everyone. Then when Thanos comes back, he's not even the one who gets to kill him again. He's died and came back himself more than once. He's wandered, lost and confused and without purpose.

Gamora is ten kinds of messed up (from Thanos being a relation), and that's before losing her lover to the Cancerverse.

Rocket and Groot are a "raccoon and a tree." Fighting battles that are a million times bigger than they are, losing friends, never truly having a home...

And that's only UP TO the Cancerverse. That's not everything that came after for these people.
How do you expect people with such chaotic lives to ever stay the same?

Peter SHOULD act completely different. He's retaken the name that he felt he'd tarnished forever, became a leader, after being a loner for decades.

They've found a family in each other, a home, even if it is just a group of people, just as lost as the next. How do you expect them to stay the same, with the lives they lead?"

And so I pose the question to my fellow Galaxians here. How can we expect them to stay the same, story arc after story arc, and remain the same people, through all the chaos and turmoil they go through? How much of their character is reasonable, realistic, and rational to expect them to retain year after year? I keep seeing people talk about how "these aren't the same Guardians!" but if they were, if they remained unchanging... would the story be as good? Would you believe that they could come out the other end of these ordeals and remain unaffected? Love or hate who they come out as on the other end, it's irrelevant; I'm asking, can you expect them to remain unchanging?

One of the members of the D'ast Raccoonatics, Onoroian, just happened to get a late pass to attend NYCC.  There was a topic about said convention in which the OP expressed an interest in acquiring one of those exclusive Rocket Raccoon plushie.  I, of course, had to reply and mention that I, also, wanted one very much. I had a couple people in the topic say they would try to get me one, but, a couple nights ago, out of the blue, Onoroian, who had not previously posted in that topic, said he was in line to buy me one!  I was just so excited (and a bit worried that they would sell out, because he said the line was very long).  About a couple hours later, he posted the panel from War of Kings with Rocket saying "Say hello to my little friend.", and under that, he had typed "Success!"

It was such an amazing thing for him to do and I was not expecting it, he is even sending me the Skottie Young print, too.

And another pic, of the sketch

If you happen to read this, Onoroian, feel free to introduce yourself in Comments. You deserve to be recognized for this awesome act.

Update: I originally typed this up during NYCC. Since I did, Onoroian has shipped me the plushie and litho and sent me the tracking number. I will have them by the end of the day on Friday, October 17th (tomorrow)

    In Other Guardians News

Onoroian did not spend his entire time in NYCC waiting in line.  He also got to meet and chat with Marvel Heroes personality and Gazillion employee Doomsaw.  Doomsaw answered some of my friend's questions.  One of those was whether we would see any more Guardians as playable for Marvel Heroes.  Doomsaw confirmed two other Guardians are currently planned.  He would only confirm one, Peter Quill aka Starlord.  No big surprise there, with the Guardians movie coming up.  It is very nice to know we will see Starlord as playable and I would guess before the movie on August 1, but no timeframe was given by Doomsaw.

    Guardians News Buzz - 10/22/13

Hello, Galaxians! As the film has wrapped, we're getting a lull in news coming out of the Guardians camp; the actors are taking a small vacation and some down-time to recoup, Marvel as a whole is gearing up for the new Thor release, but just as things seem to hit a low, we get teased with small tidbits. One of which I think might please a certain Racoonatic to hear.

First of all, the news starts off with Chris Pratt talking about Rocket Raccoon, and what to expect from the character.
Check it out after the jump.

“You think it’s a cartoon character, but it’s not, it’s a very real creature,” the actor said at the “Parks and Recreation” 100th Episode Celebration on Wednesday.
”[Rocket Raccoon has been] tortured his whole life and no one else likes him, so he’s lonely and he’s angry and it’s like, [there are] all these elements [to the character],” he continued. “You sort of forget about that, you wouldn't think about, [and] hopefully will come to life. I think it will and that’s why they hired a really good actor to do the role.”
Adding, “I could not be more excited that Bradley Cooper is voicing Rocket Raccoon, it’s a great character. It’s probably the best character in the movie, just because it’s not what you would expect.” (Full article at AccessHollywood.com )

It's awesome to see Chris so excited about the character and trying to get him a little more spotlight, considering he's such a huge part of the team and hasn't gotten the same limelight that the rest of the cast has (save for Groot, but still, the buzz with Vin keeps his naming coming up more than Rocket's).

But the really exciting part is when Kevin Feige hears about Pratt's statements. Check out the video to hear what Kevin has to say.

Kevin says that the movie hinges on Rocket and Marvel Studios' ability to make the audience believe a gun-weilding raccoon in space. That process starts with the awesome character from the comics, continues on into James Gunn's writing of Rocket, the animation of Rocket, and finally Bradley Cooper bringing the character to life.
Here's the bit I got excited about.
Kevin: "The key to Rocket is that he doesn't necessarily know, or care, that he's a raccoon. And if you point that out to him, he's not particularly pleased about it."

I think this lends credence to my earlier theory; perhaps it's more of an in-between issue. He was a raccoon, now he's more than that, and doesn't want people to see him as "just a raccoon". Of course, all of this is suspect and we'll have to wait for the movie to see exactly how it all plays out. But it looks like they're not completely taking the "raccoon" out of Rocket Raccoon

What do you think? Can we take what Kevin said to heart; Rocket is still a raccoon? Does hearing Chris talk about Rocket being a more serious character change the way you think about the film? Is it just me, or are we talking about Rocket a lot in the last couple of weeks?

Pratt explained, "You think it's a cartoon character, but it's not, it's a very real creature, Rocket has been tortured his whole life and no-one else likes him, so he's lonely and he's angry and there are all these elements to the character. You sort of forget about that, you wouldn't think about that, and hopefully it will come to life."
He added, "I think it will and that's why they hired a really good actor to do the role. I could not be more excited that Bradley Cooper is voicing Rocket Raccoon - it's a great character. It's probably the best character in the movie, just because it's not what you would expect."

Opinion Post from Lyesmith : My Hopes for Gamora

    $

I hope she isn't the Guardians version of Black Widow.

That being said. I loved Black Widow. I thought she was a great character; a classic, strong-willed and independent Joss female character. She has tones of Buffy, Echo, Zoe, and River. And while I'm not asking to make Gamora, nor Black Widow, lead characters, I do want to see Marvel handle Gamora differently outside of the movie.

Read the rest after the jump!

This is what I mean. Look at the toys associated with the first Avengers movies. The t-shirts, the lunchboxes, the extra accessories; it's almost as if Black Widow is an after-thought. Sure, Avengers is going to be pushed more towards boys. I get that. But that doesn't mean girls aren't watching it. It doesn't mean that they don't need to have that character and role-model present and available. I have two daughters. My older daughter, the eldest of my children, often pretends she's Black Widow, because she's old enough to recognize the female characters and pick them out of the team. My youngest daughter, the youngest of my children, is The Hulk as often as she is Thor, and plays them twice as often as she even considers being Black Widow.
My oldest is old enough to seek out the female; the youngest identifies with the characters most prominent.

I want Gamora to be someone young girls look at and go “Wow!” just as much as they see Rocket Raccoon. Maybe that's a lot of pressure to put on a character like Gamora in and movie like Guardians of the Galaxy, but until we start seeing comic book movies with female leads, the weight rests on the shoulders of characters like Black Widow and Gamora. I don't want to see “female lead comic book movies”, I want a comic book movie whom the lead character happens to be female. If we keep thinking of these movies as “female lead” or “female centered”, then that's what they're going to be, and they're going to be comic book movies second. I think that's where a lot of these conversations end up breaking down behind studio doors. Stop worrying about gender roles and stereotypes and just write a good comic book movie! Just keep in mind that girls and women are reading comic books, watching comic book movies, and are more interested in the genre than ever before.

There's a lot of pressure on DC to make a Wonder Woman movie. I've often seen the joke, “DC says a Wonder Woman movie is too complex for the mainstream audience. Marvel's reply? Here's a talking space-raccoon with a machine gun!” With the massive success Marvel's had with their movies in the last 10 years I think DC is finally going “Hey, I think we're dropping the ball here”. I think a Wonder Woman movie in the near future is a distinct possibility and I pray it's done well.

(Alan Tudyk as the Black Widow character. Tell me you wouldn't watch that!)

So, my fellow Galaxians, here's my question to you – if you were going to have a Marvel comics movie with a female lead character, what movie would it be? Would she lead a team or star in her own solo movie?
Do you think Black Widow and Gamora, and to a lesser extent, SifPepper Potts, Jane Foster and Maria Hill, (and soon to be Scarlet Witch) have a responsibility as role-models, or do you think we need to wait for someone who isn't part of a team before we start hoping our girls begin running around in capes and masks?

Do you have comic book characters currently in movies you'd rather young girls look up to besides a double-agent assassin and the deadliest woman in the galaxy?

    Happy Halloween Galaxians!

    Flarkin' Awesome 005

Cosmic greetings, all! It's been a while, your Raccoonatic Commander was recovering in the Halfworld Asylum following a double accent/species retcon (only metaphorically, of course). Rocket is a raccoon, I will not acknowledge anything else in the 616. If anyone says otherwise in the future comics, it is a mass illusion created by Star-Thief, who escaped custody somehow (hey, that is less convoluted than the USM origin). Enough of the rantcoon, on to the main subject suggested to me by Cameron, thank you... here comes another installment of Flarkin' Awesome...

Issue 005 - Step One: Have an Awesome Hero Named Rocket Raccoon, Step Two: ???, Step Three: Profit!!!

In Rocket's Annihilators: Earthfall side feature, we had a comical story, in which Mojo's Majordomo tried to create a Rocket & Groot show in the Mojoverse to capitalize on merchandising.  While a joke story, clearly, it does raise an interesting question, why not market such an interesting (and awesome) hero?

If you are a fan of Spider-Man, Wolverine, or Iron Man, you can literally get any item under the sun branded with your favorite hero.  We Raccoonatics do not have quite so many opportunities.  With the movie coming next year, that is certainly going to change, but I am here to look at the options that Rocket's fans have currently.

    Books

These barely count as merchandise for Rocket.  He is a comic character, so his medium of comic books is the primary way in which he is presented to us by Marvel.  Collected works, however, fit the mold of the merchandise concept better than separate comic issues.  There are actually, I believe, three different books out there that are about collected works for Rocket and/or his buddy Groot.  Of these, the one I will recommend is...

The Rocket Raccoon and Groot Complete Collection. This book has Groot's first appearance, Rocket's first appearance, his Hulk story, his '85 limited series, and both his Annihilators and Annihilators: Earthfall side features. Basically, it is everything Rocket was in outside of the Conquest/Guardians teams (except for his brief She-Hulk appearance and his Infinity comic). I bought this myself, even though I had the stories separately, because it is convenient to have them in one place and it is a great way to introduce people to the character.

    Figures/Figurines

Even the most obscure of superheroes tend to at least have some sort of plastic representation out in the world and Rocket Raccoon has several.

    Rocket Box-Set Figurine
A rather small figure, but a good likeness to his early volume 2 appearance. It is possible to find this one sold separately on Ebay, etc., but you will likely have to, as I did, buy the whole box set to get him, which runs from about 20 to 25 dollars.

    Rocket Raccoon Build-A-Figure

Don't need to post a separate picture of this one (it is the picture I use as the intro to my Flarkin' Awesome issues, the Groot in the picture is from the above box set, though).  At a glance, it might be mistaken as being very similar to the above figurine.  The BAF figure is much larger, more detailed, and has more articulation.  It was definitely worth what I paid and is the figurine that currently has a position of honor on my desk. Heh.  And speaking of what I paid, you have a couple options with this one. The pieces of the figure were sold alongside different Marvel figures.  You could buy all those figures and collect the pieces, as Marvel likely intended, or you can do what I did and look for a complete set of parts on Ebay.  I paid around 35 dollars.  Sounds like a lot, but, had I bought all the separate figures to get all the Rocket parts, I would've paid a lot more. And as I said, it is an awesome figure and worth it, in my opinion.

    Hero Clix

Hero Clix is a tabletop strategy game that uses small plastic figures representing essentially every comic book hero from DC, Marvel, and other companies.  Rocket currently has a Hero Clix figure which I actually do not yet have.

You will see this one pop-up on Amazon from time to time at a fairly reasonable price (the link I provided may or may not work by the time you read this). In my opinion, he looks a bit odd in this interpretation, a bit thin and tall. I may get it eventually, but I would recommend either of the two figures above over this one. And I've heard there will be a new Rocket Hero Clix figure coming out alongside a Guardians set in the future, so maybe watch for that (this one was included in a Thor set, for some reason)

    Apparel

The big comic book character apparel item is, of course, the T-Shirt, and that is pretty much all you are going to find for Rocket, currently. I've listed below some of them.

This is the only Rocket Raccoon shirt I currently have, but I really do like it. Iconic cover art image from Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2.

    Rocket Raccoon Retro Appearance Shirt

Rather interesting one here. They used Rocket's old 80's look combined with the proclamation of his being a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy (which he did not help form until 2008). Even so, it looks pretty cool, plan to get it someday, and we ran a separate article on this very site about it once. (The link goes to a white version of the shirt, the colored shirt link was not working at the time. Just look up Rocket Raccoon on Amazon, though, and you will find it.)

Another shirt with Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 cover art. Technically it is merchandise for the whole team, but our guy Rocket is front and center, so good enough.

I would not be at all surprised if there are other shirts out there I do not have listed. Comic book characters are a very common inspiration for T-Shirts, even characters like Rocket Raccoon.

    Games

Maybe not traditionally what some would consider merchandise, but getting to play as your favorite hero is sure fun. Rocket's star has really just started to rise, so his appearances in video games have been few and recent.

    Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Marvel's decision to have Capcom include Rocket Raccoon in the upgraded version of the popular fighting game may have received some decidedly split reactions.  For many people, myself included, his announcement for the roster was the first they had heard of Mr. Awesome. And, for that, I am forever grateful to Capcom for agreeing and Marvel for, presumably, insisting on his inclusion. It is a side-view 2D streetfighting combo-based fighter, the models and environments themselves are three-dimensional, though.  Honestly, I am horrible at these things, but I bought it and, with its colorful varied cast and over-the-top moves, it is a fun game to play. You should be able to find this one numerous places for cheap, but, if you wanna play Rocket, make sure it is Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

    Marvel Heroes

Free online Diablo-esque ARPG (actually made by David Brevik, who created the first two Diablo games) and my current drug of choice, heh. Rocket is, of course, on the roster, or I wouldn't have listed it here. Peter Quill is also confirmed to be coming alongside another Guardian, who I am hearing may be Gamora. You can find my now somewhat outdated review here (the game has had many additions and improvements since I wrote that). Gazillion is constantly at work responding to their players through actions and words. They are consistently participating in forums and are just awesome people. How awesome are they, well, I will just leave a pic of this new unique item....

    LEGO Marvel Superheroes

The newest game to feature Rocket Raccoon. I've got the PC version. Just finished story last night, but was up late doing so, and I have not had time to unlock Rocket Raccoon. And not just Rocket, the current modern team is all represented here: Peter Quill, Rocket, Groot, Gamora, and Drax. Even Nova is on the game. The Guardians are not exactly part of the story proper, but they do kinda show up in it, kinda. Won't spoil when, but they are actually introduced as a team, which is pretty cool.

Update: Since I wrote the original draft of this article, I have had to opportunity to unlock and play all the Guardians, including Rocket Raccoon. For the Raccoonatics, I must say, it is somewhat disappointing. Rocket looks ok, despite the fact they clearly just textured Squirrel Girl's tail for his tail. After all, he is short and stout anyway, so that fits the LEGO figure aesthetic well. It is ironic that Marvel made a decision to drop Rocket's Cockney accent while this game was being developed because I have never heard him sound more British than he does on LEGO Marvel. He even uses obvious British slang. But it is ok and amusing voice acting, what you hear of it. Here is the rub. As a character in this game, Rocket Raccoon is practically useless. He has no situational powers to interact with special items. What little we have seen of Rocket's bare paws, he does not have very long claws, but giving him digging or the ability to interact with claw switches would've made some sense. And, given he is a raccoon, the supersenses ability that both Wolverine and Beast have would have made plenty of sense, too. Rocket only runs, despite the fact they could have given him a rocket pack for flight. His only attacking is firing his large slow gun (no rapid blaster blasts for combos), and said gun does not even damage silver or gold bricks (c'mon, guys, Rocket has some of the most powerful guns in the galaxy). You'd think he'd have enough procyonid agility and nimbleness to climb acrobatic wall sets, but nope. And, to top it all off, presumably because of his shortness, he cannot use vehicles or even activate the most basic switches and devices (which I believe every other  hero can). So, if you want to play as Rocket, you get to shoot at enemies very slowly, and that's about it. Again, disappointing. For the Galaxians general, the other Guardians don't really have situational abilities either. At least Starlord, Drax, and Gamora can use vehicles and activate switches. And they do have their proper weapons. Quill even has flight (he's the only one who does), but you'd think the element guns he is clearly using could interact with special bricks. Groot is probably the most useful, since he is a big figure and big figures can do a number of special things throughout certain levels.

    Misc

Forgot this one in my first run through, mostly because it does not fit with the other categories.

A fabric wall poster featuring Rocket as he appeared in artwork for UMvC3. This is listed at about 30 dollars on Amazon (not sure if it is sold elsewhere) and I do not have it, myself. But I've got that Skottie Young litho now, so I don't mind too much.

    The Exclusives

Ah, the holy grails of the Raccoonatic fandom, those items that Marvel chooses not to give to the general public but only to sell to the convention-goers. There are two main ones.

    The Coffee Mug

Coffee is, like, the only thing the Raccoonatic Commander drinks. It is almost as important to me as Rocket Raccoon. So, this is an item I really, really, really wanted.  After its first appearance, at NYCC 12, they were selling for fifty dollars.  I thought that was steep. But, after they were sold one more final time at SDCC this year, the prices on Ebay jumped to hundreds of dollars. Ah well. (There was also a smart phone case with this design, but I don't have a smart phone currently, so that didn't bother me as much)

    The Plushie

This was sold as an exclusive at the NYCC this year, alongside a Skottie Young lithograph.  As you may have seen me proclaim (on practically every place online I go), I have a very awesome friend in Onoroian who bought me one of these plushies and it is now on my desk. They had 1000 of the plushie/litho sets and sold all of them at NYCC. The plushie is currently selling for over 100 dollars on Ebay (still cheaper than the coffee mugs).

    The Future

With the big movie coming next August and Rocket beginning to finally be recognized as the awesome hero he is, I think we will be seeing plenty of Rocket and Guardians merchandising in the coming months. And, I will likely be much poorer because of that. Heh. So, are there any cool Rocket items that I missed in this article? Feel free to share.

Until next time, stay awesome and see ya 'round the Raccooniverse!

(P.S.: Sorry for posting this myself, Cameron. I tried to contact you about it. I guess you are busy or something, which is fine. If you need to pull it down or edit it later that's cool.)

Catching up with Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn on the red carpet at Marvel Studio's Thor: The Dark World premiere, CraveOnline managed to score a few quotes about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Hit the jump to see the full video interview with James Gunn - BE WARNED. This does contain some spoilers from Thor: The Dark World. Even so, we needed something to whet our appetite for Guardians. We needed something to get us through this new lull. This helps. No one gets me as excited for this movie as watching James Gunn, when he talks about it. Let's DO this already!

James talks about the set, effects, casts performances, he addresses the movie banner we showed back on the 1st, and generally talks about this movie, probably more so than we've seen as of yet, so far.

Marvel Heroes 2.0 Update Goes Live Today

Gaz Adds a Little Mischief, and A Lot of Fun, in 2.0

Some months ago, I did a review of Marvel Heroes.  I had been a Beta tester for said game since October of last year and the game had thoroughly impressed me. I am pleased to say that, since that review, Gazillion, being as amazingly responsive to community suggestion as ever and showing their own imagination, has continued to make the game better with each update.

The splinter system for unlocking heroes I mentioned in my review, has now been live for some time.  It allows players to save up a currency to buy specific heroes or buy a random box to gamble on getting a new hero.  Human Torch, Emma Frost, Luke Cage, and Squirrel Girl were all added as playable after I wrote that review.  There have also been dozens of adjustments to quality of life elements and hero powers.  Plus new elements, like unique items (they named one after yours truly), team insignias (a type of equip), and the Midtown Manhattan area (random way to level if you are burnt out on story).

    (Click For More)

Today, patch 2.0 of Marvel Heroes will go live.  This patch is the first of four that will feature Asgardian story content (obvious tie-in with the new Thor movie, cannot wait to see what Gaz does next summer).  Among the content is, just surprisingly announced about a week or so ago, a new playable... character, Loki!  Loki's default costume will be based on the new Thor movie, but he will have a purchasable costume that is truer to his comic book appearance (no, Hiddleston didn't do the voice acting, they got Crispin Freeman, but he's a veteran voice-actor, so not bad).  The patch will also add two new areas, a Fjords of Norway area that can be traveled to if you have beaten Doctor Doom on any difficulty.  That area will have, in addition to mobs to fight, events, and side treasure rooms, an area with Reed Richards.  Reed will be accepting donations of all types of items.  There are set goals for each item type, and when all those goals have been met, he will be able to open the portal to Asgard.  This is, essentially, gonna be a game-wide unlock event, and the top 500 donors will be listed for future players to see once the event has finished.

The Asgard area was unlocked on Test Center, and it will also feature some new playable content, with more presumably to come in the three remaining Asgard patches.  Among other things, Asgard includes a new playable hub of Odin's Palace.  This hub has all the typical vendors, but you will also be able to purchase a new type of equipment called a legendary item.  These items, which are bought with currency earned from doing legendary quests, can actually level up and become more powerful as they are used.  The patch will also add two more artifact slots and a new slot for a ring. Rings are found as drops of different rarities (green, blue, purple) and are basically just equippable sets of different helpful stats.

On Test Center, they had made an adjustment to one of Rocket Raccoon's staple powers, Tactical Destruction.  The change they made unintentionally nerfed the power rather hard.  One of the developers, Xeneth, went to fix that issue and decided, while doing it, why not give Rocket Raccoon a bunch of quick buffs, which he did (awesome).  Some of his powers are now quicker and more powerful... and Groot unlocks at level 10 (instead of 30)!  This should help one of the main issues some had with Rocket, that he felt a bit dull to level at low levels.  And, speaking of Groot, he finally is receiving a proper voice-over in this patch.  When he is summoned, he exclaims "I am Groot!" (Cool, I know).  And, speaking of Rocket, he still has an upcoming full review and rework, which I expect will make him even better (since he is considered by the min/max-ing crew as one of the weaker heroes, like I care. He is a blast to play, in my opinion)

If you tried Marvel Heroes out earlier this year and thought it was just ok or meh, maybe give it a second look, when the patch goes live later today.  And, if you haven't tried it yet, go to marvelheroes.com, register, and download.  It is free-to-play (and awesome).

(Also, a brief mention of future plans. Gambit will be added later this month, a new Bronx Zoo area is planned. Ghost Rider and Nightcrawler are both expected next, the former definitely within the year, the latter possibly so. After them, Moon Knight and Doctor Strange are both planned. And, as I've mentioned Peter Quill and Gamora will be added at some point, as Guardians reps, in the future.)

Until next time, this is the Raccoonatic Commander, signing out.

We've seen the covers that the Guardians share with the All-New X-Men for the Trial of Jean Grey crossover - but now, Brian Michael Bendis, current writer on both books, is slowly releasing variant covers by artist Dale Keown. Hit the jump to see what we've got so far!

I don't know about you folks, but I think these covers are gorgeous. Very well done and lots of fun. Who do you think will be paired off in the next two? Cyclops and Star-Lord? I think that's a safe bet. Then Angel and Groot? Do you think we'll get any others with Angela? Only time will tell! Keep watching here for updates on these variant covers.

    According to CBR:
"With Nick (Bradshaw) joining the all-star creative team of Brian (Michael Bendis) and Sara Pichelli, Guardians of the Galaxy promises to be the book that Marvel readers will be talking about all the way through the the opening of their movie in August,"Marvel Senior Editor Stephen Wacker told Newsarama. "And with two new members causing all sorts of problems, the galaxy’s least likely super hero team is going to find itself in a whole mess of trouble."

The issue is slated for Free Comic Book Day which hits May 3, 2014, and will also contain a Superior Spider-Man back-up story by Dan Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli that sets the stage for the big 2014 "top secret Spider-Man event."

How do my fellow Galaxians feel about new additions to the team? Angela has been met with a lukewarm welcome from fans, and obviously the only new addition we can see here is Captain Marvel. How do you think she'll fit in with our other Guardians? And who could be the blacked out character? Looks bulky, maybe toting a big gun? I'll be interested to see how all of this plays out. Don't forget to leave your comments below and let us know what you think!

    Leo Wyld's Flarkin' Awesome Giveaway

Cosmic greetings, one and all (Especially to our visitors from Marvel Heroes).  This is your Raccoonatic Commander Leo Wyld.

Yes, there is a giveaway (for US players only, sorry), but, before I get to that, I will explain why am I here, what I am doing, and maybe partake in a bit of shameless self-promotion.

    (Expand the Article for Details)

I have been writing for this site for about four months now as an enthusiastic supporter of all things Rocket Raccoon.  This site has articles fairly frequently (if you are a Guardians fan, please bookmark/favorite), so some of those writings may be somewhat buried.  I will throw some links at you:

Introduction - This is where I introduced myself to this site and its readers.
Biography - If you don't know much about Rocket, you should really check this out (there are *some* spoilers)
Comic List - If you plan to read his comics, here is a list of his comic appearances (scroll down)
(Outdated) Marvel Heroes Review - I also did a bit not long ago about the most recent patch, this review, however, was from just before splinters were added.

And the series that gave this giveaway it's name, Flarkin' Awesome. There have been five segments in the series so far, each about a different aspect of Rocket Raccoon and the Raccoonatic fandom.
    Issue 1, Issue 2, Issue 3, Issue 4, and Issue 5

There have been other articles I have written. I've broken a couple news stories about Rocket's accent being dropped and the potential retcon to his origins. I don't have those links handy, but, I believe, you can do a search of the site through a search engine, or just manually go back through some older news. I am not the only writer here and there have been some great things posted here in the past that you may like to see, anyway.

So, the giveaway.  A generous benefactor, who may introduce himself if he chooses, gave me a code for 2100 G's (which are the currency, bought with real money, that is used to buy things from the in-game store).  This awesome site has been such a great place to write, I thought I would use this opportunity to show it off to the Marvel Heroes players.

I'm going to keep this simple.  You have to be a US resident, I am told, to use the code.  Sorry, that's built into the code, I have no control over that.  If you do qualify, though, I am going to want you to post in the comments section and make sure to tell me your Marvel Heroes name.  I guess it does not really matter what you post, but someone on forums was asking a question about which I would be curious to hear some feedback.  The question, Would you ever consider prestiging Rocket to Red 60?  (You know *I* am)

I want honest answers.  I'm actually going to be using random.org to select a winner from the posters, so it does not have to be an answer that I like.  I will leave this open for one week to give people time to enter (I will pick a winner on November 24, 2013 at noon Eastern).  If you are reading this and do not play Marvel Heroes, it is free to play, so that gives you ample time to create an account and see if you would be interested in receiving some G's for it. Again, make sure to post your in-game Marvel Heroes name along with your comment. I will deliver the code by Marvel Heroes forum private message (although, I will obviously do an announcement of who won here, as well)

(P.S.: If you read any of my articles, you may see me reference the fact that Marvel is planning to retcon the fact that Rocket is a genetically modified raccoon. They want to see he is not a raccoon at all, despite the fact he, others, and the narrative specifically call him one many times in the past. Most of his fans are unhappy about this, so the Raccoonatic fandom is determined to deny such a retcon.  I've been using a hashtag on Twitter to "campaign" against it: #RocketIsARaccoon.  If you frequent Twitter, and agree with me on this matter, I'd appreciate if you could find a way to work that hashtag into a tweet. Also, regardless, feel free to follow me, I am Rocket Raccoon @raccoonatic )

(P.P.S.: There seems to be some confusion about the above parenthetical. The retcon I am referring to is not a variation in the cinematic universe, it is a plan to alter Rocket's origin in the 616, the mainstream Marvel comics universe)
