For cosmic comic fans, Adam Warlock is a very important character to the Marvel universe. He has been single-handedly responsible for taking down "the mad Titan" Thanos on many an occasion. He has been a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well. Also, he has was pretty much the main character of the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, a storyline which Marvel Studios seems to be moving their films towards. But will he make it into the "Marvel Cinematic Universe"? Let's talk about that...
More after the jump!
The Strange Birth of Adam Warlock
Before we get to where Adam Warlock fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I'd like to tell you a little bit about the guy...
Fantastic Four #67 |
Adam Warlock was born (or created) in 1967 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He was initially given the name of "Him" in Fantastic Four #67, which was his first appearance (in the flesh). However, Warlock appeared in "cocoon form" in the previous issue, Fantastic Four #66.
As you can see in the image to the left, Adam Warlock was birthed like a "beautiful butterfly." Actually, he was created by "The Enclave," these super-evil scientists who work at a remote place on Earth called "The Beehive." (Take notes, you will be graded.) The reason they create Warlock is simple: they wanted to create the "perfect human being" in order to take over the world (or something like that). They succeed, in some capacity, but while in cocoon form, "Him" (a.k.a. Adam Warlock) realizes their evil plan and is like, "Screw this. I'm leaving." So he breaks out of his cocoon and ends up kidnapping Lady Sif to be his bride (who can blame him?).
Birth in Infinity Gauntlet
Thor: The Cameo World
During the mid-credits scene of Thor: The Dark World, we were introduced to The Collector, played by Benicio Del Toro. In the scene, Volstagg and Lady Sif (Adam's crush) bring "The Aether," to The Collector, for him to add to his vast collection of things. While walking through his "trophy room," Lady Sif passes by a giant glass container, holding something very ugly, that also looks very familiar (pictured below). While we can't be 100% sure that this "cocoon" is Adam Warlock's cocoon or even a cocoon at all, let us put the pieces together.
In this scene, we learn that "The Aether" and "The Tesseract" are, in fact, Infinity stones (or gases or liquids or whatever retcon Marvel Studios has planned). There is no character, other than Thanos, who is so closely connected to the Infinity stones, than Adam Warlock. Also, we know The Collector will be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy. If you are going to introduce Adam Warlock, what better way to do it than introducing him in the movie starring his most current team? Also, Lady Sif (so lovely) could have been put in this scene as a clue, considering Adam Warlock kidnaps her after breaking out of his cocoon. I'm not a fan of love triangles, but watching Adam Warlock and Thor go toe-to-toe over Lady Sif would be very satisfying.
Now, I don't think that Adam Warlock will be playing a large role in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. We haven't gotten any casting news on Adam Warlock, or any official word that he will be appearing at all, but because of his connection to Thanos, The Infinity Gauntlet, and The Guardians, it is more than likely. At most, he will probably show up in the third act of the film.
Now, there are many ways that Marvel Studios could introduce Warlock, but I would like to see something like this:
At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, it is revealed that The Collector has been working for Thanos, in order to get the all of the Infinity Gems. While standing in The Collector's trophy room, The Collector and Nebula begin speaking of Thanos' plans to take over the universe. Suddenly, a light appears, almost blinding both of them. While squinting, they look over towards the light to see where it is coming from. The glass surrounding the cocoon shatters in every direction. The cocoon opens and we see the silhouette of a man floating in the light. The Collector begins to stammer. "Who...who are you?!" he asks. As the light begins to dissipate, we see the figure fall slowly to the ground. On the ground, he is kneeling over. As he raises his head slowly, we see [insert famous actor here] as Adam Warlock. With an somber look on his face, he simply says, "I am Him." Boom. Credits.
How would you like to see Adam Warlock introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy? Who would you like to see play him? Drop us a comment below and let us know. And get creative. Maybe we can give Marvel Studios some good ideas.
